I’m a gay man in my mid 30s, Im married to the love of my life and born in the south of the US. I’ve seen hate, hate is ugly and should never happen. My husband and I both come out to our families, my family was loving and excepting, my husbands not so much, his family are super religious and it took some time but now they support us and it’s a beautiful thing because it was hard on my husband.
As for pride, we are torn on it, we think it’s lost it’s meaning, the sexualizing and partying of it in our opinion has ruined it. It should always be family friendly, when men and women are almost naked and drunk, we don’t want our kids seeing belligerent people. We believe pride should be a reminder of how far we’ve all come, a history lesson, teaching people about sexually transmitted diseases, of course march and we hope that one day we won’t even need a pride month because it’s become so normalized and excepted that’s it’s not needed.
But, this is just the opinion of two gays that love each other and love all of you.

I'm gay in the U.S. I'm meeting more and more gays that are distancing themselves from the flag and pride as an event or idea as it no longer represents who we are. I agree with this sentiment. After having been to a few pride events in different cities it seems to me as this is no longer about the freedom to be who we are, it has seemingly been altered to reflect something that says all things are correct and good. This is a false statement/belief. At the conclusion of my last pride experience I won't likely be attending any event/s related to pride. The levels of self disrespect and indecency has become extreme. For those that come from highly conservative religious families/areas this is what is seen and reflected as what the gay culture/lifestyle is about. This becomes an uphill battle to win these folks over to acceptance. Additionally, I think we've forgotten that it is ok for people to disagree. I have no need to be accepted by everyone in every country and I don't think less of them as a result. I'm sure they believe and agree with other things that I don't. As the saying goes, you attract more flies with honey than with vinegar. Perhaps we should be considering whether our actions and appearance are such that respect is deserved and therefore likely earned, rather than shouting about the respect we deserve while acting like children, mid-tantrum. A final mention, I actually shy away from businesses trying to capitalize on the rainbow flag. I go to businesses that can provide what I am looking for at a price I'm willing to pay with the level of service I'm seeking. I care not how they believe or what they think. Not everyone will agree with my post and that is ok as I'm not here to start anything. Stating this as I know others out there are starting to feel as though they are looked down on for not fully accepting the idea of pride and to let those individuals know they are not alone.

@@toml1171 OMG, I couldn't have said it better! You are 1000% correct! I agree that bigots will be bigots, and no amount of respectability politics will make most of them open their minds and be kind to the LGBT community.
It's amazing how internalized homophobia among some in the LGBT community make them want to have disdain for others in the community while complaining that that's why the homophobic people don't like us. It's the typical blaming the victims of discrimination for the oppression they experience.

What you really should do, honestly, is watch the ultimate respectable gay for the political right in the US - Dave Rubin - invite Ben Shapiro to his anniversary party. Dave has a husband and children and spends all his time on his very large platform trashing the left in this country. That should be enough to earn Ben's respect and acceptance, right? Absolutely not. Ben declines because of his "beliefs", and Dave just lets it slide. He's not willing to stand up for his own family and his own values because he is STILL trying to win the acceptance of Ben and other conservatives. The bigots are the ones with the problem. Stop doing this to yourself.

I agree 100% with this. The LGBT "activism" is now doing harm to the community. It is creating a backlash that will affect those more vulnerable, like LGBT people in the developing world, where the fight for basic rights was still in diapers. I want no part of a Pride "parade" or march where grown men shake their junk in front children, it is wrong.

Todays gay generation is making a mockery of pride and all the hard work generations before fought for the rights. Companies never gave a crap about the LGB in the past, why are they suddenly caring about us now. Even the government is making a mockery of pride. Say what you will about the Republicans and the conservatives. At least they stand by what they believe in. I respect them more then i do the democratic party. The party of diversity has turned its back on the LGB. I suspect many in the LGB is seeing this, but they dont want to speak out, because youll be canceled.

Thanks for your chat videos. I appreciate your presents online. I was institutionalized and put under hypnosis by the state of North Dakota around the age 7-8 years after I was abandoned at United hospital waiting room by my mother. I am 45 now, still no clear answers. I went to get my records from social services, I was apologized to and denied access, even by the FBI, considered classified. SS said they do not do things like they used to. I was extremely abused and tortured by a stepfather from 3-7, included strangling's, beatings, drownings, etc. the torture was furthered by the state, causing trauma to the heart from a staff take down, at Gerard of Iowa school for children with disabilities back in 1988. I did not know what being gay was back then. I created an alter ego. I just came out to a select few this past spring. come to find out my foster father already knew, as to my release records from Luther Hall group home in Fargo ND around 1992. I did not know he knew. some of my so-called friends went silent. it's a long and complex history. I was locked up for being abused and born gay.

I'm deeply concerned about the casual approach taken in this discussion, particularly when addressing a community that is often denied proper education due to their identity. The acceptance of 'rainbow capitalism' without critical examination risks undermining the integrity and honesty that Pride symbols represent. It's not about being 'beggars' or 'choosers'; it's about demanding genuine support, not just marketing strategies.
Seeing a rainbow flag can indeed provide comfort, but we must also push for a world where support is shown through meaningful actions, not just symbols. This includes advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, creating inclusive policies, and educating others about the community. We shouldn't settle for 'something is better than nothing.' We should strive for 'something is better when it's sincere and impactful.'
Moreover, as members of the LGBTQ+ community, we have a responsibility to those who came before us to seek out the truth and educate ourselves about our history. If we don't take ownership of our narrative, others will, and we risk losing agency over our own story. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to demand more than just token gestures of support. We must ensure our history is preserved, our present is respected, and our future is secure.😖😩😤🌈
By the way P.R.I.D.E. stands for Personal Rights in Defense and Education. Also, pride was never meant to be a child friendly event, its a riotous response to discrimination. Name ONE protest that made sure it was "Family Friendly" , it always has been, and children are not welcome at a protest.
You two enjoy many privileges and rights that cost and was paid for with the blood of Proud LGBTQ+ examples of excellence. Shame is what I felt watching this episode.

As a young gay man in his 20s, I like pride. So long, I've felt like I couldn't express this large part of myself without being ostracized. Pride, to me, means being who you are and being unashamed of your sexuality. Personally, I don't mind the attention from corporations. I'm tired of living in a world where we're invisible, so getting the spotlight isn't that bad especially when it really only happens one month out of the year. I feel like some gays and other members of the LGBT+ community have reached a point where they are comfortable in their own lives (which is a good thing), but, as a result, say things like "everything is fine; LGBT people are complaining about nothing; gay people are who we really need to worry about, not the straight people who have way more representation, presence, power, and attention than the former." Being gay isn't a walk in the park for everybody. People still get assaulted, ostracized, bullied, and disowned for being LGBT. For me, Pride is a symbol of self expression and freedom. I don't think we need to justify celebrating gay Pride. I don't think pride month us perfect, but I am happy that it exists.

It’s been so comforting to me and I’ve really looked forward to listening to each new episode every Wednesday. I’ve never been to an actual pride, last year I went to a little picnic where some people were performing and I even sang a couple of my original songs for the first time, but my town has a lot of people who are really homophobic and don’t support us, so it was kind of Scary at the same time. It was also hard because although I know both my parents support the community as a whole, I’m not sure if my mom in particular, accepts the fact that me being asexual includes me as a part of the queer community as well. So I am really excited to hopefully be going to a bigger pride event and parade in a couple days with some of my friends in LA. I don’t know what to expect so I’m excited but also anxious because I know that some people don’t think asexuals belong at pride. I love this podcast so much and I am looking forward to season two. I came of age in the late 70s and early 80s, and we had Pride marches to protest the legal persecution and rampant harassment of gay people. We were fighting for our lives. For me, Pride today is a whole different animal. Pride has become nothing more than parades and parties. A chance to get wild, and sadly, a chance for the straights to laugh at and be entertained by ‘the gays’, while they do nothing the rest of the year to fight for our rights. Granted, that is progress from when they used to show up to beat the shit out of us while the police turned a blind eye.
I can only speak for myself and my experiences, but no one in my thankfully large circle of gay men and lesbians attends Pride events. We don’t relate to the carnival atmosphere. We’ve definitely made progress, but I can’t help but wonder if the party atmosphere is becoming counterproductive to affecting long-term legal and social change for the better.

    1. The AI transcriber is very poorly performing.
The other day it made he into she.
This time pride becomes pried and prize!, look becomes lucky, rioting becomes writing, Joel became Jill etc.
    2. Not sure that Christian missionary activity is simply "to get more people to come to church".
"In my House are many mansions". It should not therefore be surprising that there are all sorts of interpretations of scripture.
Very often (I've just done it too) quotes are out of context.
Woe unto you if you take seriously "And Judas went and hanged himself". "Go and do thou likewise".
I particularly like the Anglican church's capacity for change and for catering for each one's needs.
    3. Is one's sexual preference an example of "all walks of life"?
    4. Much kudos to Keegan for his coming out. The subject is pretty much taboo in the sporting world almost everywhere.
Working in a cultural environment may make coming out easier, but it's always a big step. Well done too, Joel.
Hm there's a part of the video which treats one's relationship to one's company/employer. Has Keegan been going around to his colleagues and sporting personalities saying "why are you doing this?"
    Pride.
The antonym 'shame' is usual. But I can't recall ever having been ashamed (more specifically being shamed) for any sexual activity.
[e.g. Mum saying, "try not to spill it on the bedroom carpet. Such a problem to clean!" was practical, not critical.]
Collins Dictionary is interesting, as it give English usage out of the UK, especially American English usage.
The UK and USA definitions of pride seem to have different emphases.
    (I paraphrase:)
UK linked to honour; pride in an achievement (constructing a porch chair, learning a difficult piano piece, memorising one's lines for a first stage performance, daring to go out there in front of a public etc.)
USA slightly viewed as arrogance and excessive self-esteem.
In both cases, I don't really see why pride enters into something that Keegan says we can't control... our sexuality.
    Holding hands in public.
Do heterosexuals do it more than Gays seem to want to?
    Play Station.
is chiefly established as a Sony subsidiary in California, Japan and London.
Should I point out that any individual or company supporting or promoting illegal activity opens themselves to judicial pursuit and heavy penalties?
    Too sexual?
Half the word homosexual is sexual !
Go and do your thing in Soho tonight.

People who think Pride has become over sexualized are mistaken. Way before the large corporations and businesses sponsored floats and way before every politician in town drives by in an antique car, the gay bars were the sponsors of the large floats. I'm talking about the late seventies and early eighties. There were miles of semi naked men gyrating to canned disco music. Now, it's MUCH more family friendly. (I'm talking about Chicago Pride.)

I have to say a lot of prides are changing now if you go to Gran Canaria and other gay friendly countries they have prides for all sorts of people.
Gran Canaria has bear pride, rubber pride, summer pride, fetish pride and winter pride.
I do think they should do more of that in the UK too.
In the parades abroad and the UK you see men in fetish gear all the time, and i think you should be proud to be half naked or proud to wear fetish wear.
I think if your offended stay away pride is for everyone.
But also i do think that if you want to get very explicit during pride then there are bars pubs and clubs that cater for the more outrageous men or women.
But if you do venture into Germany Berlin Or Belgium Antwerp then you will have to give it a miss if you are easily offended about people in fetish wear etc.
All i would say is go be yourself just be respectful and who cares what people think, if you want to dress outrageous go for it.
I have to see half naked or nude straight women and men on beaches abroad so if they can be so free then so can we.
Just do not turn up totally naked for pride in the UK lol!

I hate to write this as I’ve thoroughly enjoy your podcast and felt a strong connection to you both and your outlooks/ beliefs… but I have to say that I am really disappointed in the way you discussed kink at Pride. With Keegan been a history buff I would have hoped he would have been aware of the huge part those in fetish communities played in fighting aids and fighting for our rights.
I think a TH-cam channel you could learn a lot from in this regard is ‘Watts The Safeword’. They have 1 specific video I’d highly recommend discussing Kink at Pride… that’s if you don’t feel comfortable exploring kink further than that.

I think when it comes to the kink communities involvement in Pride is integral to the movement. Leather/kink/etc. has been apart of the protest since the beginning. Also, sexuality plays apart in what Pride is. It’s not the entirety of what Pride, but plays a role that is part of the history whether you identify with those communities or not.

I want to throw in my 2 cents' worth, as a gay 55 yr old cis guy in the American South(originally from Seattle). To your early comments about some Christians' claims that pride is sinful and bad. Pu-Lease! You'd think no one has ever heard the concept of single words having multiple definitions. The haters are choosing to apply their conservative Xtian definition, which equates pride with arrogance. It is important to note, though, that gospel references most often apply it to the self-righteous, the Pharisees, NOT to marginalized people asking for a bit of basic social inclusion.
Gay Pride, as you pointed out, is first and foremost a social protest, decidely NOT arrogance. But importantly, it is also an antidote to shame, the most toxic negative emotion. Shame is, btw, strongly promoted by Christian organizations. Shame and its sibling, Fear, are the twin weapons toxic religion uses to control the faithful and keep them obedient. No wonder they disparage pride. ....the bastards! 🙃

In the U.S., Bud Light sales are still reeling from sending a one-off can with a trans woman on it. Target is getting threats against employees because they sell pride items. Libraries are getting defunded for having gay positive books. This is everything Pride is about. We're fighting for visibility and defending our right to exist freely as any non-opressed person.
From the early years of pride, they were fighting against the centuries of repression, prudery and outright shame. They were purposely putting it out there as real as it is. Plus, the 70s were the sexual revolution, it all kind of blended together.

There are some things in parades not meant for small kids. While some gay people are having families, a pride parade is not the Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade. It is a protest march against marginalization, oppression and fear.
Maybe one tactic would be a child read the boundary-crossing biblical things any child can pick up in a public library?
Judging from your context clues, “LGBT” “bombard” and “cross boundaries” with their “annoying” existence. We will not stay hidden or quiet for your comfort.

Honestly I think it’s total BS for them to do that to you. Their negative comments is no better than what the state is doing. To boycott a vacation destination because political representatives in a state isn’t going to make them change their minds. In fact, not going there gives them (the legislation) what they want and the people who are living there and are part of the LGBTQ community need that support to give them the big middle finger to say, I don’t care if you don’t support us, we are here and we will live our lives in peace and be happy. There’s a large amount of people living in Florida dealing with that and I doubt they will leave their homes and jobs and be driven out of the state because of it. Then the narrow minded people who are pushing that agenda wins. Sorry for the rant but it really made me mad when I saw the comment bashing you for choosing to go there for vacation. xx

I worry that it is a balance. Kids are the future and if Pride is going to retain its meaning in the future and these kids are going to benefit from the lessons of Pride and the support it grants, then families need to feel comfortable attending and media coverage needs to give that impression.
On the other hand... it wasn't families with children at Stonewall, or Pulse Nightclub, or a lot of other gathering places. It certainly wasn't the media, who have a lot to answer for, including misrepresenting photos from Folsom as more well-rounded Pride festivals. It was people who were there to be themselves and seek out intimacy and were unapologetically dressed in "strange" clothing and considered undesirable by wider, passing society. Could an argument be made that perhaps assless chaps and outright nudity and more provocative sexual behavior are disturbing to other people at Pride, and there should be alternatives? Maybe... but they're among the people who fought for the right to have Pride Festivals, who are the biggest targets. And telling them they shouldn't be at Pride is not something I'd feel comfortable doing. And again, maybe there should be agreement to limit nudity (especially with attacks and anti-LGBTQIA+ rulings and police brutality... being prepared to have more protection is better than less), but these people deserve a place at Pride.
You guys do amazing things and are reaching so many people, and I'm so happy the first season has gone so well and I always look forward to your videos on here, but I thought around the subject of exclusions and restrictions we need to be very careful.
But yeah, no anti-trans groups. Police probably shouldn't be there in uniform either, given the Stonewall origins.

You might think it is helpful for gaining broader acceptance to tell straight people "I'm not one of *those* gays" wearing the pup hoods that you're reacting to, or doing other things that clearly aren't appropriate for kids. It's not a valid argument, and here's the most important reason why. The gays doing the sexual acting out that you find gross are, in fact, in search of the same kind of love and acceptance that you are. They're just searching for it in different places, and it is not your job to cast broad judgment on things you clearly don't know very much about. People are trying to erase all of us, including you, no matter how much you behave and conform. So please stop with the binary. Other members of your community aren't worth picking on.

Oh please, stop using age as an excuse. PLEENTTY of hot fit men over 50 getting guys half their age all day long. Youre either hot or your not, this didnt magically change the second you turned 50

New York, New York manchester ..mmm happy days , first went there in mid 80s ..... If you want to know more about gay history, listen to the making gay history podcasts or queer history. The making gay history podcasts are especially fascinating and will show you the groundbreaking heroes of the movement , who were campaigning and suffering discrimination etc long before Stonewall. Find out about great characters such as Harry Hay , Randy Wicker, Barbara Gittings and Vito Russo . Also, in the UK find out about the history of Peter Wildeblood, the Montagu Scandal and the Wolfenden report. All fascinating stuff ;-)
