El extraordinario Thomas Hampson (1955) nos interpreta de la bellísima música de La Traviata de Verdi esta aria para barítono impecablemente interpretada. Infinitas gracias por subirlo.
Well, what a revelation! Having heard Fischer‐Diskauu's competent but less than totally successful 'attempt' at this aria I had reservations about Hampson tackling it but by jove he nails it and in my opinion much better than F‐D. He's not up there with the mighty rich textured voices of the past but I'm nonetheless astounded by the achievenent given that his general repertoire encompases lighter material. And I wholeheartedly agree with those commentators who praise his excellent diction. I can only repeat, what a revelation...
The voice isn't bad, just way too light for my liking. Listening to baritones like Macneil, Capuccilli, Warren, and Ruffo and then listening to Hampson, it sounds like I'm listening to a tenor, not a verdi baritone.
agree totally, so high, but people only cares of the reputation, love to have Dimitri or ton of other father voices here, in deed, he is more methotical less deep feeling and details...
What idiocy to carp about Hampson's voice being too light or too tenorish. This is a LYRIC baritone role unlike most Verdi baritones. Verdi uses dolce to emphasize the sweetness of the sound that needs to be vocalized and Hampson is perfect (despite his wooden stage movements)
Difiero respetuosamente.

@@xxsaruman82xx87 I dare listen to the D-flat at the end of the recitativo and say it again with a straight face. Does his voice fit verdi? Absolutely not. Is he a lyric or spinto tenor? Hell no. He is a very high light baritone. If his voice was heavier/had more stamina he could propably fight himself through some heldentenor roles. But lyric tenor? No way in hell. it's the same type of voice that Fischer-Dieskau had. Not very well suited to italian opera baritone roles, but also clearly not a tenor. This, for me at least, is the only Verdian role Hampson should sing; and he sings it well. Germont pere is largely a lyrical role, which does not call for the sheer vocal size and thrust required for Rigoletto, Rodrigo, Boccanegra, Macbeth, Carlo -- note how the orchestral backing of "Di Provenza" largely comprises strings). The production is absurd at best, at worst stupid. But that's another topic.

I did not know "di provenza" was written by Schubert...😂 He is anything but a Verdi baritone and in my opinion he is not even a baritone but a tenor with a lack of singing high notes - a "baritenor". Same was Fischer Diskau.
The two singers' acting is very bad; Specialy Mr. Hampson' . His melody pace is too rapid, he does not seem an old- loving -tender -man, begging his son to return to Provence . His voice is too light for this character, he sholud be singing Figaro and Don Giovanni; those are for his instrument. The scenario too modern. Should have been more vintage. Sorry, I am old fashioned.
people cares of his tall looks more, your point is so obvious, yet his name is still so high there, many times not sure if he should be a tenor, but at very least he could had tune down and acting down into the old troubled worried mid class social concious father in that kind of high highest society of PARIS, there is no excuse of not doing so, where is the artist director, afraid of mr. hampson's name too much!
Yeah, he looks and sounds a bit too young for the role...I think he should’ve played the son instead. I think Figaro would’ve fit him more because of his seemingly youthful looks and sounds. Compare this to Matthew Polenzani, who, when he did Verdi, Sung the role of Macduff (a much lighter role than the others)-he sticks to his fach.
When I watched this for the first time on TV I felt the urge to kneel down and praise the suffering father trying not to lose face and remaining the noble gentleman.
