In the book Whistledown is a huge part of who Pen is. But by the time she gets with Colin she has been doing it for over 10 years. She retires before they get together so it is not a choice between Colin or Whistledown. In the book they are both much older and she only gets caught because she comes out of retirement to call Cresida a liar. 😂😂
It might not seem like a big deal what Pen wrote in Whistledown about him but if we analyze Colin's character, is not the fact that LW called him out, is the fact that it was Pen, the person who he hold in such high esteem (kind of like Penelope with him for the first two seasons tbh), loved more than anyone else in the world and who's opinion about him mattered and cherished a lot ("Your letters are so encouraging, I thought if Penelope can see me this way, then surely I can too" - Colin in S2), that's what hit him to the core, and also bruised his ego of course and partially humiliate and expose him to the whole ton ("You say you want my help after what LW wrote?" - Colin in ep2 of S3), there's so many layers with him and that's why I love him so much, with every rewatch I discover more and more. Can't wait to see your reaction to the finale!
@@maberuesta1274 I kinda agree with you he has many layers. But I disagree with why he was so hurt. Before he ever knows it is Pen he is upset. Once he finds out he doesn't fully know why he is upset with Pen because he should be relieved. Part of what upsets him is this total stranger seeing right through his act and calling him out, if that is the case he should be relieved that it was actually someone who knows him very well. But he says the worst part is that she is a renowned writer who let him go on and on about his journals. He is jealous the entire time. He is jealous and upset because Pen doesn't need him the way he thought she did. He doesn't fully understand that until later so he lashes out a bit and tries to get her to stop writing.
@@letarivera203 I don't disagree with your point, but I still maintain mine, he is upset before because LW was the person who wrote things about his family and his own shame with Marina in S1 and put him on the spot again at the beginning of S3, he has all the right to be mad thanks to that, he verbally said it at the end of Ep1, that's why I don't think at all that he should have gotten relieved by discovering Pen but in fact it makes sense that it made it rather worse, he felt the betrayal of the words she said about him ("or do you not respect me enough? it is clear that you do not, based on what you write about me at the start of the season, what were you thinking then?" - Colin in that modiste scene, clearly what she wrote cut him more deeply that he let know back then and now he was finally opening up with her about it) AND, like you said, he was jealous of her success as a writer, and upset at the fact that thanks to that independence that she made for herself she didn't need him anymore at all, he has always been looking for a purpose and just when he thought he found it as being with Penelope and offered her not only his love but also his protection as a husband and of course economical maintenance too (as a man at that time is supposed to do), he realizes that he cannot even do that, he feels like he is unworthy of her, and doesn't understand that she only wants him for being him, not for what he could offer her. He goes through so many range of emotions in the last two eps, he is so confused, and it makes me mad that many don't put any thoughts on how he is feeling and throw him irrational hate for reacting in a way that any normal human being would (I don't mean you specifically btw, I'm talking more in general 😅😅)
