Van Halen was the force that took that term and made it exclusive to the really hard stuff. The first time I heard someone use the term in this way, was 1984. A guy who I jammed with (VH fan) said, "Led Zeppelin- That's not Heavy Metal." I was confused, because Zeppelin was one of the first bands to be labeled as Heavy Metal- arguably the first. Steppenwolf was first, but it didn't stick as a common term until Led Zeppelin got it.

Disco was still around in the early 80s, just look up hits. That’s like saying Punk died in the 1980. Punk wasn’t popular anymore in 1980, but that was when extreme sub genres like Hardcore Punk, Crust Punk, Thrashcore, etc… started to form, not to mention Pop Punk in the 90s and 2000s
