  • In this video I reveal my replacement camera for my Ricoh GR III. I decided it was time to switch out my Street Photography camera for something a little more stripped-down, with less bells, whistles and gadgets.
    While the Ricoh GR III is an incredible camera, I'm not happy with some of the features on the newer versions of the GR III, and talk about what works better for me in regards to a street photography camera.
    I'd love to hear your thoughts! Please leave any questions or comments below.
    Enjoy!

    People love the older Ricoh GRD too when it comes to black and white. Starting to love the older cameras myself. Also debating on getting a Nikon d7500 to play with too. Totally agree 40mm and 50mm in my area is like taking a street portrait of everyone. We don’t have the wide NYC sidewalks here in Tamoa.

    It took me a bit to figure out but I managed to fix the wheel on mine. Steps I performed: Removed the battery and SD card, put a few drops of contact spray on a tea spoon, carefully spilled it around the wheel and turned it a few times. Since then it's been working like new. A four Dollar fix I can re-apply any time. Hope this helps someone who like me was struggling with the wheel becoming all jumpy with time and making ISO selection in manual mode a great chore.

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh I understand it's possibly fixable, but at $1,000 you shouldn't have to sit around 'figuring out' how to fix something that is made to break. It shouldn't be on you to have to fix it to start with is what I'm saying. Shame on Ricoh for putting it's users through that. I tried all the 'fixes' but I used mine so much it was beyond repair (other than sending to ricoh). You woulnd't buy a new Cadillac/Corvette/Hi-end Vehicle then have to spend time fixing the carborater because it failed within the first few thousand miles.

      @@DozierGraphic I see your point, but it wasn't more effort to me than doing a sensor cleaning on my Fuji X-S10. I also agree with you the wheel should not let any finger residues in which is what's causing most of the issues regarding that, but as long as a bit of cleaning fixes this should the wheel go wobbly again I won't be selling the Ricoh GR III. I'm not spending money for a GR IIIx as I usually prefer to go out with the GR III for wide angels while my Fuji is in charge of anything tele with 85mm attached, but while this was an annoying issue it's not what I'd consider a deal breaker. Looking forward to your street shots with the first GR though, will be interesting to compare results to what the GR III delivers.

    3:45 is more MP only for beauty or printing larger prints? I find more MP gives me more crop factor as the #1 benefit. Also, in all real-word, what percentage of all produced GRIII and GRIIIx end up with a wheel problem? Of that percentage how many are actually permanently broken vs. fixed with external cleaning methods? Finally, what's really given up in the case of a faulty wheel say when shooting manual mode only? Thank you.

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment Roy. Regarding the number of broken wheels, much like the government, we'll never know the details as the company won't release info like that to make itself look bad. Not the end of the world, but as a youtuber I feel the responsibility to enhance the issue so others aren't afraid to voice their concern, or think THEY broke the camera in some way.
      But the fact that they literally offer the service of repairing the wheel says a lot! Plus, first hand experience, I used my ricoh nonstop for severla months and the wheel went out very early on. I mentioned it in my early videos, but also downplayed it as a lot of users do. That was wrong of me! Praising a camera that has such an obvious flaw, that I and so many others encountered, and then being told, 'yes, we know the problem exists and it's over $300 to be fixed' is wrong. It should be a recall, or if the wheel goes bad, free fix! But they only do that for a year because they know most users are casual users and it takes some use to go bad.
      And so many have talked about their own 'self fixes' that again, prove it's a problem. Again, I wouldn't buy an expensive new car, then have the windsheild wipers not work and say, well, I love the car so I just won't drive in the rain!
      Thanks again for taking the time to respond Roy!

    I completely agree with you. I had a iii and the iiiX, both are fantastic cameras. The IBIS is second to none, great low light capabilities and an amazing sensor. The big but was the crummy wheel at the back and on top. So, after a while of putting up with it I decided to sell both and buy their predecessor the GRii. So glad I did, it’s an incredible camera to use and the fact it has no IBIS and fewer pixels doesn’t make a difference at all👍

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for checking in peregrine. My biggest concern is if the wheel goes out so quickly, what else will happen to the camera? And at the price, I'm not willing to wait around to find out lol But in general, as I've always said, the GR III is truly a great camera, great concept, and the best street camera, but almost nothing is lost by downgrading to the original GR (APS-C) or the GR II.

    • @jonbarnard7186
      @jonbarnard7186 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm puzzled why everybody is selling their IIIs because of the rear wheel. I never used the wheel anyway. I just assign iso to that control toggle at the top. I have always found rear wheels to be too fiddly anyway, even when they do work properly.

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonbarnard7186 Because it's ridiculous to pay $1,000 for a camera with a major feature designed (and changed from previous working model) that is so flaw, everyone here admits they can't/don't/won't use it and just bypass it. That gives Ricoh the pass, and if no one complains, they'll just keep on going and be blind to the major flaw. But yes, you certainly can work around it, which also brings up the point WHY even have it on there if everyone uses a bypass method lol Thanks again my friend!

    the issue i have is that my gr iii doesn't save my settings. every time i turn it on it asks for language setup as if you are setting up the camera for the first time. still takes pictures perfect, but just doens't save settings anymore.. :/ very sad.

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's strange. How long have you had it/used it? It's either a defect or POSSIBLY user-error but sounds like a defect. Try a new battery, leave it one for a while, then save settings, and see if it works. I know some cameras require the battery to be in a for a while when you first purchase the camera for it to charge the internal battery enough to hold settings.

  • @16Mbvillain

    I always wondered if Ricoh could make a firmware "update" that allowed you to disable the wheel?

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that would defeat the purpose of having it in the first place (and admit it's trash), so not likely. The only thing you really can't do without the wheel is adjust manual focus. But it's so inconvenient regarding other features that I wish they'd go back to the trusted locked left-right-up-down mechanism they used with the GR and GR II, which is why I switched.

      Different people have different tastes/expectations from digital cameras. Some don't like the older models with less pixels and bells/whistles, but to me its about the experience, not the 'perfect' photo.

    I never use the wheel, therefore I have no complaints about it.

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally understand! It's a fine line and difficult for me to complain because it's such an awesome camera. Most people will just work around it and not use the wheel, and it's not the end of the world. I'm mainly just having fun poking the bear, but felt a need to point it out. I just felt that if the wheel was bad, what else is going to happen down the road. But again, it's a subjective concern and I still love the camera in general!

      Same size APS-C sensor, but the I is a 12-bit and the III is a 14-bit - for whatever that's worth. But I have to say, after shooting and editing these images, I know it sounds 'convenient,' but I think the overall colors and raw file works better with the GR I. I know the III has a better sensor, better qualities, but the GR I feels a little more 'organic' and not as 'processed' as the III. I'm sure that's scientifically inaccurate, but I've used the III enough to see the difference, and 'better' isn't always 'better.'

    The flash is good for fill flash on a sunny day, especially when you consider the leaf shutter and high sync speeds. I've owned them both, and I would trade the wifi stuff for the built-in flash any day. As for the stupid wheel on the back of the III, I just assign iso to the control toggle, so it's not a problem for me. Still, that wheel is a disappointment, and not up to Ricoh's usual build standards. Flash aside, I still prefer the III. I need ibis. But that's just me.
