Good, now do the same report but on commercial fishers breaking the law, I dare you :)

@@jonomasonILoveUgood they need to go further and take their boats. I'd like to know who and which company is doing it.

@@jonomasonILoveU I was meaning the repeated breaching of quotas, fish dumping, extreme bycatch, that sort of thing. When it comes to marine reserves the commercial breaches are pretty uncommon so this report was all good in that respect yeah.
I wasn't being hyperbolic with the dare bit though. Some of those fisheries can get bloody intimidating if you start poking your nose into their business, they have often pulled backroom favours to get investigations squashed, and worse.

@@MaryAda-wj3dy Yeah, when you break such a well known and clear law as part of a business there should be almost no ways to get a second chance.

It's the public that get held accountable while fishing vessels dump their catch to catch fresher produce.

Just because it's illegal, doesn't mean the fishing companies aren't doing it
Especially when you have an idiot like Shane Jones turning a blind eye to it...

Unfortunately, there are now operators that employ people to fish the reserves. The risk of getting caught is low, and the financial penalties insignificant, when compared to the money being made.

Spot on. Here in Hawkesbay you know a lot of fisherman are doing it because the anonymous businesses are paying them handsomely do bring in the extra catch.

The nutter who caught 21 snapps at the Long Bay reserve was caught because there are many locals watching over that patch, but guess what's happening in the remote areas? I'm glad the nutter with the 21 snapps was caught, but commercial long liners with 500 hooks are legally fishing in winter around Rangitoto, which is only 5-6 kms from there, snapper swim further than that in a day.

But if you can afford the permits, staff and boats, you can deploy your fleets of trawlers and exploit resources until the populations completely collapse. With a small 10% reduction in trawling, the average Joe could feed his family again, and the fish populations would be healthier than under the current system

In our area in NSW it is the commercial fishos who have depleted a lot of the stocks. Commercial abalone divers have stripped the area of what used to be vast stocks.

@couchbanana343 I don't see the crown filling sacks of paua. The crown allocates quotas to the public to make sure everyone gets there share and then commercial get a quota to generate economic growth. In theory the system is completely fair, although commercial fishers bribe politicians to get more , and so did Maori when they got customary title rights through government. National gave them that to help get themselves into government with support from the Maori party.
