Iowa is always good, but I don't see them as a real contender next season.

    I watched Ed Ruth in high school. He was hot and cold, placing in the PA States as a sophomore and junrior, but not winning. And yet he gave Q Wright a terrific match that was the talk of the states one year. Then he went to Blair. He won the National Preps, but got decked, I think, at the Beast of the East. Going to Penn State, no one could have anticipated the career he was to have. Cael and Cody gave him consistency. No one expected Ruth to win 3 titles. But retroactively they regret that injury in the semi's his redshirt freshman year that led to 3rd place. By the time he was done, PSU fans thought Ed was pretty invincible. We saw all that unfullfilled talent in high school translate to fullfilled talent in college. Cael?

    • @kirkl1057
      @kirkl1057 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It was the 2007 PIAAs that Ruth, from Susquehanna Twp., lost to QW in the semis. Before that match, he upset the top guy in the state, Frick from Nazareth, in the quarters. That was one of the factors that led to Central Dauphin winning the team title over the heavy favorite Nazareth. It was the first of CD's 7 straight team championships, including the state dual meet tournament. We were shooting our film Takedowns and Falls that year, and have some of his match with QW on film.
      I was at the BOE tournament the year he wrestled for Blair and lost his first match. Ruth came storming back for, I think 7 wins in a row to place 3rd. It was quite an impressive run. I also saw him in Philly his RS freshman year, when he placed 3rd at nationals. He had a couple quick pins. Beat some top guys. i think he got injured when he lost in 1/4s but rebounded to take 3rd. His only college loss after that, was to Gabe Dean at the Southern Scuffle, I think. One of the most dominant NCAA wrestlers ever.

      @@motoz30 No, I don't think I missed the point. I think you did, since you're talking about gummys and trophies for all.
      Ed Ruth is an incredible fighter. Having dueled PSU in college, I know this first hand in the flesh. Great competitors don't necessarily have to have any particular knowledge of the history of their sport; their focus is technical and getting in pique condition to compete at the highest level, in the now. Having background knowledge, role models, and historical basis can help in that, but it is not pre-requisite, and thanks to Ruth's honest humility in admitting what he did not know, we have proof of exactly that postulate: you can be great and not know much about some other greats, if you train hard, have natural ability, and receive great technical tutelage.
      My last year in college, one of my teammates won a D1 national title as a redshirt freshman in dominant style and I remember teasing him all the time about not knowing the people whose photos we had framed on the room in the wall... it made no difference in the finals... or on the podium... zero.

    Is it common for wrestling scholarships to be that way? Because I was in HS when Ruth was and he was a beast at Blair crazy he didn’t get a full ride

    • @rossogden9920
      @rossogden9920 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's unfortunately necessary.
      The NCAA caps D1 wrestling scholarships at 9.9 per team. With most D1 teams having 25 or so wrestlers on the team, it's up to the coaches to decide how to distribute those 9.9 scholarships over the 25 wrestlers. Mathematically, the 'average' wrestler would only get a 40% scholarship.
      But there are other ways that colleges can help out their athletes who aren't on a full ride, via preferred financial aid grants, 'no show' work study jobs, etc.

    Ed Ruth was the laziest Wrestler I thought I ever saw...and then I saw that beast come back and take 3rd when he's supposed to be one of the favorites...and you watch him battle all the way back to 3rd...and the guy who beat him end up winning it...pretty easily IIRC...
    Thats when the light went off. "Ahh...he's not lazy...he's just SO fucking good...it LOOKS easy and...well, almost kinda lazy.
    Not too dissimilar from DT or Cael himself...or then Mark Hall, but he just didn't look like he was working out there at times. He'd finish so clean and turn guys with that cradle so easily.
    I don't want THIS to sound lazy as a comp, but if Lee Kemp opened it up, I think he's the most similar to Ed Ruth I've seen(or .aybe that should be backwards. Ruth was the most similar to Kemp talent wise).
    But that's what Cael does. He takes away the fear guys have of shooting, he makes it fun, and they're the best conditioned.
    It's like Gable meets John Smith...
    Cael will end up with 20 team titles at PSU. I said it when he got hired, if he can JUST keep that talent in state...that alone will make PSU a contender with Iowa/Okie St. He's done that and more.
