No. 7, the cello etude, starting here at 13:34, is really magical. I love how the RH and LH melodic lines come into and out of aural focus, like in a mist. In contrast is Lang Lang's approach to the parallel thirds in no. 6. I like being able to hear all of the notes at the same volume level the whole time. There are so many unique elements in Lang Lang’s Chopin Etudes, and he gives them a lyricism that is marvelous, and a clarity to the sound that comes from less reliance on pedaled disguise when things get difficult. I’m often not a fan of Lang Lang’s quirky interpretations, but this exposition of Chopin’s studies is phenomenal and highlights on so many little buts of sound that I haven’t heard before, not even in Richter’s version. Some people hate Lang lang by the simple fact that they don´t like HOW he show himself playing. Here, they can´t see him, and they are forced to just hear the sound, so they like. If someone had told this was Ashkenazy, everybody was praising... Lang lang is fantastic!
What's with all this hate around Lang Lang? They are his interpretations! I understand people can have their own opinions but are you really in the position to insult him when you cannot do half of what he does? Learn to give some respect to the people who play music for us to enjoy.
Why hate? Let me answer: Composer wants from performer to play his (composer's) work as he/she wants it to be played. I know, there is something called interpretation, but it has limits. Lang Lang crosses these limits, and this is why some people admire his interpretations, and some (like me) hate it. TO BE WELL UNDERSTOOD: I RESPECT HIS PIANO TECHNIQUE, AND ALL THE WORK HE DID TO ACHIEVE IT. I JUST HATE HIS INTERPRETATIONS.
I'm a joke? Well, maybe. But about right and wrong interpretations - there is one thing. If you want to play some music piece totally as-you-wish: compose it. When you perform someone else's work - play as composer wants it, thats all...
My last post here: Andy da Pianist: You're right about one thing: Music is for us to enjoy, no one put a gun next to my head and said LISTEN! I decided to listen, i listened, and thats all. If You enjoy Lang Lang and his performances - good for you. About right and wrong interpretations - we don't have to agree. Good bye.
I listened to these studies by Lang Lang live and I must say they were very excited,a mixture of technique that is close to perfection and sound control refined that sometimes drags you in magical atmospheres.Obviously the best pianist doesn't exist,MUSIC IS NOT AN EXACT SCIENCE,and there is nothing "objectively provable".I personally find that Pollini has an executive style too rigid and substantially cold.My personal taste prefers Ashkenazy, but Lang Lang brigs out melodies unsual and interesting that offer a new reading of pieces heard hundreds of times. On the other hand,in every genius has to be a revolutionary component.......
and of course you have heard Lang talk about how he got inspired as a child... watching that great Tom and Jerry cartoon playing 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody... marvelous story
Like any pianist he hits and misses with interpretation and digital skills. Occasionally, he overshoots the bounds of what the composer intended. No doubt he is great -- especially as an entertainer -- but as a pianist I preferred Horowitz, who was also criticized for playing some pieces too fast -- others too slow. I believe accuracy in hitting the correct notes are essential! If one cannot do that because they're playing at break-neck speed, then one should slow it down -- not just slur his way through it.
You certainly may so suggest, and I'll get to it asap. (I'm a little covered with work right now and it may be a few days.) I thoroughly enjoy Kissin. He has a certain finesse with some works that is astounding and just gorgeous.
Этюды Шопена в таком блестящем исполнении - это романтические новеллы в нотах. Душа очищается до легкости полета, сердце вновь готово любить и нет силы способной этому помешать. .
Lang Lang, Yuja Wang and Daniil Trifonov are all having remarkable achievement. That is why that they are standing out. It doesn’t mean that they are perfect - nobody is. I don’t think that put down any of them is the way to promote any other of them.
i studied an academic music degree and one of my essays was on Chopin. Even so, LangLang is represented through the recording methods and acoustics, if he didn't like it, he would have changed it... Reading first-hand descriptions of Chopin's tone and also hearing recordings of people directly connected with Chopin in the carried legacy of his teaching through his own pupils, you can get a pretty good idea of what sort of sound Chopin was renowned for, ...
There is some lovely playing here - I like his tone quality and tender lyricism in the first encore and variety of tone in the short Chinese piece. Plenty of brilliance in the faster Etudes and of course the final encore - Liszt's La Campanella.
and yes, particularly towards the end of Chopin's short life, his health impeded on his ability to produce the performances he wanted... Indeed his confiding in Liszt and his admiration for his command of the instrument was a wonderful gift to Chopin I think, in that there was someone that could interpret his music so brilliantly. Something he very much appreciated
He could've played many of these etudes such as 25 no 2 much faster, but he chose not to for the harmonies and melodies to ring out more. (✿◠‿◠) Honestly, usually I am not a huge fan of Lang's Chopin, even though I admire his Liszt and Bach, but, this is certainly a poetic and more reserved Lang Lang that I like much more for the Chopin pieces! I would never have guessed that this was Lang Lang's playing.
The last time I saw this much excitement over the Chopin 24 Etudes was the anticipation awaiting Murray Perahia's recording and it turned out to be sort of a non-event.
I like the feeling of La Campanella! So great! :) but, I heard some mistakes in the ending :( but feeling was awesome!!!! Way to go, LANG LANG!!!!!!!!!!!@@@@@@@
(guest) Recently I found a fascinating video on TH-cam, it was Lang-Lang receiviing invaluable advice from the great Daniel Baremboim... you'd think Lang-Lang was already extremely competent, but he took in every tiny nuance and subtle point that the Maestro made, incorporating them into his playing of Beethoven's "Appassionata" Sonata. It was so interesting, and gave an insight into expert , sensitive portrayal of the composer's music...masterclasses by Benjamin Zander are also very educational : they must be so helpful to students, and also to music lovers, even here on TH-cam, if not in real life.... 🎼😊🇬🇧😊🎼❤🎼
I heared Mikhail Faerman and Augustin Anievas perform the 24 Etudes in recital several times, many years ago. Aldo Ciccolini also performed the whole set on concert, many years ago. He told me Michelangeli, only ONCE in his life, also did! The excellent Dutch Maestro Daniël Wayenberg used to perform Chopin's 24 Etudes before and Liszt's 12 Transcendental Etudes after the break!! Not everyone can do such a tour de force! But all this isn't necessary. Regards, G. D.
Cortot, Brailowsky, Anievas, Vasary, François, Magin, Badura-Skoda, Haas, Cziffra and some other 'older' pianists also recorded the whole set in those years.
Another thing to address would be Chopin's frail health and body. If you compare statements of what his playing was like compared to what he wrote in his scores he may have played with more intense dynamics if able to do so and the same thing goes for Scriabin. Both of them complained of their lack of power, technically not musically.
Josie Lau Yes very nice, and also like the N12 very much, but Chopin never called that "winterwind" or "Ocean" they was written in 1831 Viena at the Russian conquist of Varsovia and love troubles that why they sound tragic. They are Etudes of sentimental pains, Chopin had to leave his country for war and some people preffer to think he inspirated on an Ocean or winterwind.
DualThunder ,It takes some imagination to think what Chopin would have played like even taking into account what has been documented about his playing. I had heard about Scriabin's erratic playing before I heard his piano rolls and some descriptions fit but nothing could compare to hearing his playing of his poem and the 4th sonata. The playing of his preludes especially Op.22 No.1 can be described as erratic in tempo changes and rhythm.
In the fourth etude, in a minor, Lang Lang shifts the downbeat to the right hand chords somewhere during the middle section. This really misrepresents the music.
yeah fair play. Im glad we can come to a mutual understanding. I admit it was a bit forward to claim what 'Chopin would have said', but I hope you understand that a fairly accurate idea of what he COULD have sounded like is attainable in terms of general aesthetic, and simply that I personally don't think this would have been 'it'. I agree. But i also have to admit LangLang seems to be much better to watch live than in recordings.
Sorry to read you don't love Richter’s interpretations and B’hoven’s Appassionata. Of course you’re entitled to it, but it’s a mystery to me how a person can dislike such a wonderful piece of art. The allegro ma non troppo is actually one of my all time favourites -- so lively and passionate, like a wild river
But it's interesting because of his way to place the notes in space, to take time, because of his singing tone.. And you may know what's written in the score but not what's behind. Nobody really knows. And it is a pianist's task to find out, to try to get closer to why a composer wrote a piece. You find it only in the score. Pletnev said in a masterclass: If you change something in the score, you must be absolutely sure that what you do is in service to the composer's intentions.
Glenn Gould called Bach's BWV 903 "a monstrosity", yet he recorded the Chromatic Fantasy (a wonderful interpretation!) and also played the Appassionata (another wonderful interpretation!). We clearly disagree on the quality of the piece: I love B'hoven's Op. 57

Some people hate Lang lang by the simple fact that they don´t like HOW he show himself playing. Here, they can´t see him, and they are forced to just hear the sound, so they like. If someone had told this was Ashkenazy, everybody was praising... Lang lang is fantastic!
I don’t think so, the interpretation of Lang lang for music may be the keypoint.
yea i always wondered what would comments look like if the artists name wasnt disclosed or labelled as by some other well recieved pianist as you said
So warm and such amazing interpretation and expression, marvelous!
Don’t care what he plays, it’s ok with me, beautiful to listen to! Thankyou Lang Lang!
here, here!
and keep an open e a r !
Lang Lang is a phenomenon
Different understanding has different performance. Great pianist in the world mastering every single tone during play.👍
So there are "wrong" and "right" interpretations now? There is a "right" way to play piano now? There are "limits" to music now? You're a joke.
I'm a joke? Well, maybe. But about right and wrong interpretations - there is one thing. If you want to play some music piece totally as-you-wish: compose it. When you perform someone else's work - play as composer wants it, thats all...
Andy da Pianist I totally agree with you!!!
Good bye.
for me- best preformer of chopin etudes. such a soft and romantic touch...
LL's performance of no. 7 though...heart wrenching. x.x...
I love it! So emotional and deep
Chopin Op 25 no 12 was great! :)
Lang lang the best pianist
Le n.1 c'est la meilleure interprétation que je connais!
Very nice. I also like Louis Lortie version of the Etudes Op20 and op25
Потрясающий пианист! Нет ему равных!
Sin comentarios,,,,Es el mejor pianista del mundo !!!
There is some lovely playing here - I like his tone quality and tender lyricism in the first encore and variety of tone in the short Chinese piece. Plenty of brilliance in the faster Etudes and of course the final encore - Liszt's La Campanella.
You described this performance perfectly.
Amazing....Master!!!
Bravo
His La Campanella is marvelous, especially his left hand. I think Liszt would have loved it!
and yes, particularly towards the end of Chopin's short life, his health impeded on his ability to produce the performances he wanted...
I think it is...saw him plays this repertoire in Birmingham, UK back in September 2011 and it sounds very much like Lang Lang's touch.
Gracias !
The last time I saw this much excitement over the Chopin 24 Etudes was the anticipation awaiting Murray Perahia's recording and it turned out to be sort of a non-event.
Romanticism will never be dead - as long as there is biology and psychology in the world (and note that biology and psychology need not be human).
Prejudice, jealousy are such part of the human weakness. Even the beauty of music would not change that.
I like the feeling of La Campanella! So great! :) but, I heard some mistakes in the ending :( but feeling was awesome!!!! Way to go, LANG LANG!!!!!!!!!!!@@@@@@@
Thanks for posting!

Recently I found a fascinating video on TH-cam, it was Lang-Lang receiviing invaluable advice from the great Daniel Baremboim... you'd think Lang-Lang was already extremely competent, but he took in every tiny nuance and subtle point that the Maestro made, incorporating them into his playing of Beethoven's "Appassionata" Sonata.
Regards,
Both of them complained of their lack of power, technically not musically.
and one can feel palpably the wonderful Czech music public!
Dit heeft hij wel mooi gespeeld
yundi li Op 25 no 11 winterwind is the BEST. can't compare. no one can. YUNDI GO!!!!!!!!
Josie Lau You haven't listened to Cziffra...
Listen to gleen gould
+Josie Lau Actually Kissin plays Winter Wind pretty nicely too
+LisztianGR i was about to say that ;) Cziffra was one of a kind.
7:30 my favorite
+Rafael Ilheo Shigatsu wa kimi no uso?
+Balog Szilárd sure!!!! I'm so glad for this anime, I met a lot of great piano pieces.
:)))

Lang Lang isn't my favorite pianist, but there is much beauty in this recording.
very softly sad as pouring rain soaks my cold hands
こういう音質嫌いじゃないです
In the fourth etude, in a minor, Lang Lang shifts the downbeat to the right hand chords somewhere during the middle section. This really misrepresents the music.
yeah fair play. Im glad we can come to a mutual understanding. I admit it was a bit forward to claim what 'Chopin would have said', but I hope you understand that a fairly accurate idea of what he COULD have sounded like is attainable in terms of general aesthetic, and simply that I personally don't think this would have been 'it'. I agree. But i also have to admit LangLang seems to be much better to watch live than in recordings.
Thank you!
謝謝!:)
Usually i'm really not a fan of lang lang's interpretation's.. But i have to admit that i am very surprised with this recording.
Que bien toca el número 5.......la velocidad justa y necesaria para resaltar el tema principal.
Amasing rendition of the Opus 25!
Thanks for your interest.
Although music isn't important to me anymore, I might record them, one of these months/years.

Geert Dehoux.
Il suffit de fermer les yeux - il faut fermer les yeux! - pour comprendre que Lang Lang est un vrai musicien.
Imagine a world without Chopin an piano performers without Lang Lang It would be the unfinished symphony of Schubert
You really play so sensitive and beautiful (don't understand them who has voted negatively)
never knew Lang Lang could play this well
But it's interesting because of his way to place the notes in space, to take time, because of his singing tone..
Wonderful playing. I really want to see the vedio.
there's chopin played by lang-lang. and there's chopin played by everyone else.
and there is chopin played by kissin or Zimerman wich are the bests
+Swen Zettler Pollini, my friend
Fortunately.
LangLang, LongLong and everlasting!!!!
It is evident that you haven't listened to Cortot's 1925 recording of it: it remains unmatched.
Beautiful!
Oh ~ so wonderful ~~~
Love it!
