Honestly, the whole POINT of Sonic is to be unabashedly the platonic ideal of "what every 8 year old things is peak coolness, and also most young adults who are just really tall 8 year olds"
Also, his first line SA2 is even MORE peak, imo: he just broke out of military police custody, and the only thing he has to say to them?

    • @magic2546

@@OtakuUnitedStudioGlad that more people are realizing this. There have definitely been times when localizers change something that they shouldn't have, but more often than not localizers are doing their jobs perfectly. And yet some people will still get mad because the translation wasn't one to one, not understanding that that's pretty impossible without sounding unnatural. The goal is to simply translate the meaning and vibe that the original writer wanted to convey, while also sounding natural to the audience that you're translating for.

    • @wisgarus

@@OtakuUnitedStudio To be fair, LLMs can understand subtext and nuance, that's exactly why someone could at all realistically even argue for it being used for translation or localization.
But localization is a creative process, a form of art. So even if or when AI gets good enough to consistently deliver relatively adequate localization with character nuance and all, it's not a job that should be automated, cause it takes away from the potential of it being elevated even higher.
Not to mention it takes away jobs from people who studied and worked towards making these things, without creating any new ones in return for them.

The localisation of SA1 is VERY good;the only real blind spot I know of is Knuckles saying "Me? What about you!" when Sonic asks if he's been tricked again.
Didn't know anyone took issue with "This is happening", it's a great line!

My first exposure to Sonic was through the GameCube version of this game, but imagine being a big Sonic fan in 1999, buying a brand new next-gen Dreamcast, booting this game up for the first time and hearing Sonic's first words? You'd be thinking, "Hell yeah, this really is happening."

Due to current malpractice and laicious intent in the industry a lot of people became more sensitive and want the literal translation, however I prefer this kind as long as it's honest

As a kid, I also read this line as indicating that nothing was happening before this. Sonic was bored and now gets to find a life of excitement. I think we can also see some of this with Amy’s introduction. To me, it indicates that the characters had fallen into a kind of normalized routine But now they get to go on a true adventure.

I never really thought the line was odd, I always interpreted it as Sonic had been looking for something interesting going on to get involved in (possibly to fight off some boredom) and declaring he found something finally/found where the action is given all the cop cars rushing by with his exclaimed line.

Honestly stuff like this is why I prefer SA1's translation to SA2's. While SA2 tried and failed to do a literal translation (see "Teriaaaa" or "Is that what Chaos Control is?"), SA1 took the opportunity to localize the writing for the audience. They even added details like Sonic and Tails's stories having slightly different lines (where they were the same in the Japanese version) to differentiate how they saw the events and the other characters.
