This line is awesome, actually
Sonic Adventure may not have perfect translation but man did they nail this one.

I would 100% watch a two-hour video explaining the literal and figurative translations of every line in Sonic Adventure 2
I'm bringing this line back into my vocabulary
I rather prefer the literal translation.
I love that line too. Especially with how it was translated. I’ve played the game with the french subtitles forever and especially before I was able to speak english and a grasp of Japanese. In French though, it says: « Et oui! Ça bouge! » which is so weird to say even in French 😂 but you can get the meaning. Literally translated it could mean: “And yes! It moves!” But in fact, it’s more like: “Aw yeah! There’s a lot of action around”
Hearing the Bible this way makes me wonder how prevalent Christianity even IS in Japan. Edit: Google says about 1.5% of the Japanese people are Christian. The most prevalent religion is Shinto and Buddhist, which makes up two thirds of the country.
wow i’ve never played a sonic game but this is interesting
A few of extra notes! x.com/TurboJehtt/status/1876712912435486794
I love this, if you'll make more I'll be really happy
You could make an entire series analyzing the localization of the Sonic series, and I'd watch the whole thing. And bookmark it. People don't understand the importance of localization. And it frustrates me in many cases of older media that people mistake as inherently poorly done instead of being "directly" from the source material. A lot of 90s and 00s localizations were iffy, like 4kids stuff, but overall, there's a lot of good work in there despite the hiccups caused by the producer requirements of the time. Also, if it came up in conversation, for at least another decade, we can just explain to kids "Sonic is just saying 'this is lit' but in 90s slang".
I agree that going with a slight alteration to preserve the meaning of the line is good, but I do think that given more time a better line translation exists, though I imagine the translators had more lines that they had to worry about, and there are plenty of other deliveries in that game that needed more time.
2:43:20 I think that's just a PC thing. It looks dark on the Gamecube version.
SO GO AND DANCE YRSELF CLEAN OOOOOHH GOTTA DANCE YOURSELF CLEAN, YEAH
another way they could’ve done it that would be slightly more accurate to the source would be “Ah yeah! I feel like a million bucks!” i’m not sure if it’d be better though, just something i thought of.
the line doesn't weird me out, rather the extremely sped up idle animation once he puts his wrists against his hips is what weirds me out
When I first heard that line as a kid it sounded to me like Sonic was enjoying the night
I think I'll die remembering this quote it's one of the most if not THE most iconic Sonic quote
Yes, indeed! This event is occurring!
And Shadow, true to his word, went on a date with Sonic
Such a good game, I've completed it so many times :D
The word you're looking for is connotation
This guy Jehtt do be making a video just on a meme line.
Imagine if English Sonic was sometimes speaking Japanese as an inverse reference to Japanese Sonic speaking English?
What a neat vid
Ay mate! It’s VAMANOS time!
41:32 I think the Light Attack bypasses the Artificial Chaos's defensive stance, which helps a lot with if you want to take them out before they attack. 42:46 If you hold A on this vine, you'll dive lower and hit the balloon.
With the unfortunate side effect that it's a VERY dated idiom.
Your videos suck ya mook😒
Your videos suck ya mook😒
2000s :"Ah yeah! This is happening!" 2020s: "Um... well that just happened."
Aw yeah! This video is happening!
"This is happening" is analogous to "The party's getting started"
I think he should have said aw yeah life is good
someone please stop making me simp for this black and red hedgehog please this didnt help his voice oh my god
That's a lot of words for a scene with unhinged jaw lipflaps and dated english VA delivery.
Translation weaboo snobs will tell you what a bad job this is because it's not a 1:1 direct translation with zero regard for context/culture barriers
Really interesting! I'd love to hear more localisation nuances like this
OMG, WHO THE HELL CARES???
do people not like this line???? it’s so cool though?????
Crazy seeing an upload from Jehht that isn't satirical or ironic. Just a genuine deep-dive on how a voice line was translated.
"Aw yeah this is happening" is an ideological opposite to "Well THAT just happened"
Wait, people have a problem with this line? I always took it to mean like, "Aw yeah, exciting things are going on!", but in a more succinct and, well, cooler way.
Wait this isn't a shitpost I don't understand
This may have been the funniest thing I experienced this week, maybe month. Well played.
How could you possibly make a 2:15 video on a single Sonic Adventure line interesting? That’s…well, that’s happening 😂
Was anyone ever arguing this line specifically was badly translated? Either way, awesome.
The most Sonic I’ve played is maybe 45 minutes of Sonic 1. For the genesis. So most of my Sonic knowledge is voice memes (stuff like jehtt, real time fandub) and bad voice lines. Although I see the problem with this one, I actually think it’s good - it gets the vibe and meaning across (like you said), and it’s also not that grammatically stupid - he’s saying that “this is happening” because he’s in a good mood, he feels like good things are happening to him, and he’s ready to make things happening. Plus it kinda seems like something I would say, so there’s also that
EXACTLY! Here in Brazil, it's pretty common for dubs to adapt expressions/sayings to fit how we speak. Two dubs famous for this are Freakazoid's and YuYu Hakusho's. The former adapted a lotta jokes that centered around very specific American culture references to fit Brazilian culture instead, or added funny lines that weren't there to keep the entertainment value high. The latter constantly used of popular sayings as filler for extra mouth flaps (if a phrase was shorter in Portuguese for example, or if a scene with characters talking, but not showing their mouths lingered a bit too long and awkwardly). I love adaptation!
They didn't seem to care much about it's lip syncing though.
I'm not huge into the fan discussion stuff but I never for a second thought this was a bad translation or an incorrect one at that. Is this a common view?
Sounds good. I'd personally go with something more like "Aw yeah! This is awesome!" only because even in 1999 (when SA1 came out in the US) "happenin'" would be a bit dated, at least in my experience. But I'm not going to worry about a single line from (oh dear god) 26 years ago.
The German Translation of this... Let's not talk about it
