A lot of these films were made on a very low budget by Richard Taylor Cartoon Films.Frozen Ponds and Learn to swim I worked on for Richard and we were very pleased with the result. They are all drawn on paper, traced onto cell and back painted. Learn to swim is unusual as it has no drawing lines and is the paint meeting paint to make the image, this was very painstaking and caused us to go way over budget. We liked doing these films because it gave the artistic freedom to try new things. There was a team of 5 or 6 working on these films.

John Taylor my favorite was Charlie the cat, I remember some of the others but I wasn't born till 73, different times altogether, who would leave a baby in a perambulator outside now? 😂 but seriously some of these public information films should be brought back & up dated or am I just nostalgically pissing against the wind? 😂

There is a desperate need for the cycling one to be shown to today's cyclists. Back when it was made there was the cycling proficiency scheme around all the schools in Britain. I did mine in 1973. Kids weren't allowed to ride their bikes to school unless they'd passed the test and been awarded the badge (I still have mine in a drawer somewhere).
The scheme taught kids all about the highway code (and that it does actually apply to cyclists!!) in preparation for when they grew up and moved onto mopeds, motorcycles and cars. Things like a red traffic light means stop for everybody. One ways streets mean one way for everybody. A cyclist using a pedestrian crossing must dismount and push the bike across. Correct hand signals and when to use them.
If the scheme was still in place we wouldn't have so many reckless and idiotic belligerent cyclists spoiling the roads for everyone, including pedestrians and other cyclists.

It used to be, that's the thing. It genuinely used to be completely fine - there was much less chance of baby snatching or anything like that. In fact, here in Norway it's still commonplace for babies to be left outside cafes in prams whilst the parents have a coffee inside, or at daycare centres.
      relocation.no/babies-sleeping-outdoors/
Norway is a (largely) safe country, and the brisk cold air is great for the health of babies :)

It just goes to show how things have changed. The advice back then was to check the ice on frozen ponds and make sure your children are supervised before they play on it. Never mind actually suggesting that playing on frozen ponds or lakes is quite dangerous and should be avoided altogether. I loved the 1970's

The cycling one and the ice and snow on windscreens needs to be revised and enforced today. In the depths of winter you see lazy drivers with iced up windows and only a small slit cleared on the front screen. They only need to get out 5 minutes earlier and clear them properly. When my car is covered with snow I get my sweeping broom and sweep ALL the snow from it whilst the motor is running to demist the screens.

These films are marvellous really. There is a simplicity and charm about them. Even the supposedly scary ones have a naivety about them, even when they are direct and rather blunt in putting their message across. These films communicate their point without sensationalizing the facts about risk or danger, which even in these times is refreshing. When was it the world went so irredemably and completely mental, can anyone tell me?

What I learned from this video:
    You can encounter flying motorcycles.
There are people who run around on the roads that wear headlights on their heads.
Propane gas likes to complain a lot about the lack of space, perhaps store it in larger tanks to prevent a deadly explosion and fire?
Zig zag lines on the road bite people! Wood post-and-rail fencing is ideal for keeping cars from falling into the abyss as it quickly conforms to the car with good strength. Cats love to stand on walls in front of hospitals. It is not a good idea to teach a child water safety by live demonstration. People can dive backwards from the pool back onto the diving board! Driving is like playing a game of space invaders. Oceans, like propane gas, often complain.

Remember when Britain was safe enough to leave a baby in a pram outside a shop? The day's before globalization and mass immigration?

Simon Collins I don’t understand that. That PIF was filmed in ‘79, right? When the U.S. was starting to have issues about missing children? Wasn’t the UK having a problem back then?

@@chrislang9442Yes you're spot on, I remember nearly every school holidays around that time children would go missing and be found dead.

I can't get over the idea that a British car would not come from the factory with a dip switch (we Yanks call them dimmer switches).

It's as if they aren't fitted.
( Of course every car is fitted with one- but seemingly not every driver knows about this "invention" .

These were commonplace in areas where mains electricity either wasn't available at all, was in too great a demand to go around everyone (The 70s actually saw timetabled blackouts to work around the problem), or was otherwise not convenient (Esp. in outhouses and sheds).
Perfectly safe, *if* sensible precautions were always adhered to. :-)
