What strength and conditioning program are you going to try for this next block leading into CIM? Don’t forget the sooner you start doing it, the better. 😉

@@eyc508 Don't know yet. Think I'm just going to keep it simple for the next month with kettle bells, & body weight. Calf raises, lunge squats, core work, etc. And then get serious after CIM with an actual plan for runners. Any recs?

The leading theories as to why you get EAMC are indeed dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and muscle fatigue. So who is to say how you got the cramps, but the matter of fact is you persevered - mad respect and keep running hard!

My man outstanding video i was lucky to meet u b4 your shakeout and just kept telling ya dont get old like me woulda coulda shoulda. I do think 2 days of strength training just 30min a pop would do u wonders at this point and shave a few more mins off. U mentioned kofuzi's video somehow i was in that and the guy who ran with him from halfway to the end.. You're right; cramping isn't necessarily due to a lack of salt (as your body dehydrates whilst racing, your blood sodium actually increases), nor can it be attributed directly to muscle strength. Most often, it appears, it comes down to your power output during the early miles in a race. Going too hard initially could well contribute to cramping in the latter miles and, like you said, remembering that you're pushing your body harder than you ever have before. Amazing race, so stoked for you!

Congrats! The group you mentioned in the beginning is probably the Abbots Age Group Championship runners. I was part of the group as well. It took us about 45 minutes to get through the gate assigned to the age groupers, so we got into our corrals very late (we were also ushered into the corrals by Abbott people). Those runners you saw most likely deserved to be there and not were “privileged” people. Good luck at CIM!

I bonked at last year's Philly Marathon. This video has so many great tid bits to help prevent that bonk this year. Thank you. My opinion is mile 13 probably did you in for mile 17. But I'm amazed you kept it together and refused to give in. Last year I locked up at mile 20, because of early miles that were far too fast. Sounds similar... Good job pushing through. It's far easier to succumb.

Just finished my first ever marathon myself, in Rhode Island. Ended up with a solo run, and can't wait to run one of the bigger ones soon. Aiming at Amsterdam next year, and Boston in 2025. Love to follow your journey, Eric! Hope to connect at some point. Two filmmakers, turned into running should have enough to talk about.

First of all, congrats on the time yours was the first result I checked. Like you I first broke three last year (but I am 53 so I don’t know if too much faster is in the cards). I’ve been enjoying watching you get better. My sub 3 came at CIM. And you’d should embrace a negative split strategy in that race. There are some Rollinghills the first half of the race and it seems like the net downhill is mainly from mile 21 on. Best of luck

When you were talking about fueling around 42 minutes, I couldn't help but think that what you did was enough, and that's all that matters. Can't beat ourselves up too much. Amazing race!

I had similar calf cramping issues but they were around mile 21 and really flaired up mile 23. I definitely think more strength and conditioning is the move in the off season. I won’t be racing another marathon again until Grandmas so I’ll be watching your progress with great interest and seeing how you adjust your training with each race.
