I am a 78 year old female with osteoarthritis. I discovered your channel and these exercises several months ago after being told to see an orthopedic surgeon for bone on bone hip arthritis. Following these exercises has enabled me to avoid shots and surgery. I can now sleep on my hip, walk stairs again, and line dance without feeling any pain. Thank you Dr. David. I am truly grateful.

@ Joywanless Im a 68 yr old female. I’ve been diagnosed with left hip osteoarthritis bone on bone. It has been very painful for me to move and on December 18, 2023,. I go for a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon for a hip replacement. I truly do not want to do this. I am starting these exercises gently because I suffer a lot of pain on that area. I am encouraged by what you state here and hope to soon post my gratitude on this site for getting stronger on that hip regenerating Cartlidge on that hip as well as avoiding a hip replacement. Thank you so much for your posting. I am encouraged.

@@dannusmk1578 his exercises have made a tremendous difference in my hip problem. There's a lot to be said for strengthening the glute-muscles to get the hip bone to sit correctly (and no longer endure sharp searing pain!)
I truly hope you are able to find relief through strength-training and are able to avoid surgery! 🙏🏼😇❤️‍🔥

I did 2 sets of exercises on day 1 and I could feel my hip loosen up! I am amazed. After a year and a half of hip pain EVERYDAY, and after going to 2 different physical therapists for 2 months each, I have relief in 2 days!? I wonder why they did not show me these exercises… the windshield wiper exercise is very effective for me. Thank you, thank you, Thank you!!!! I am in between phase 2 and phase 3 from your other video, and I have been determined to avoid surgery if I can. Thank you for all your videos. You have saved me! :)

ok mate pay attention, this may help someone. After a year and an MRI am sure I have "mild" arthritis in one hip. Caused by standing on one leg and lifting and dropping heel of other leg on a trolley throttle every ten seconds all day. My guess, weakened the glute, strengthened quads and pull it out of align. Your vid taught this.. first time i discovered this in a year of solid hip research. Can walk ...2k before it gets nasty. Front quads were having mind numbing pain on standing, solved by stretching these with foot to glutes and pull foot up,, relaxed quads and immense pain stopped. Still got immense hip pain when standing from sitting,, took a few mins to wriggle foot and hip to take any weight. Started your Glutes exercizes... took one day to improve, madly exercizing them now. ALSO.. the terrible pain on raising from sitting in hip is controlled if I contract glutes hard, ...???? the hip must "slip out" of alignment on sitting and then have to realign on standing, criminal pain. with contracting glutes this seems to pull hip back "in" .. anyhow, will continue and will inform of improvements. Madly eating good oils and fish, and fasting 16 hrs, plus curcumin, glucosamine and chondroiten. OK hope this helps you or someone with such searing quad or hip pain, as pain is enough to see stars. Many thanks, your work seems good as I have become a bit of an expert on all things arthritis and hip leg muscle stretches, strength and alignment. Yours worked literally in a few days.. more power and much love.

Thank you Dr. David. I’m an Rn and still working at 65. I’ve been having issues for at least 5 years. It started out with noticing difficulty in doing stairs. I’ve always had strong legs and I couldn’t figure out why this was happening. I was told I have advanced degenerative discs and thought that was causing the problem. Then I started having severe groin pain on the right following a right knee replacement and saw an orthopedic doctor. When I described the severity of the groin pain and how it was affecting my ability to do things he laughed. He never said “ oh yes , that’s related to your hip issue”. He determined that I had arthritis in my hip and sent me to physical therapy. I loved my physical therapist, but honestly I didn’t get any relief. Then I when to a chiropractor that when I asked is it a mechanical issue why I was having all this groin pain he actually told me it was trauma related and not mechanical. Honestly I was very confused between my back issues and knee replacement and leg weakness and groin pain I was discouraged. Then I decided to to do a few exercises that I found on TH-cam on a daily basis and found some relief and also started to notice that the exercises were starting to get easier and I was improving my flexibility and my stiffness and strength were improving and most of all the groin pain was gone. I have since dropped a good amount of weight and eliminated foods that contribute to inflammation. I’m excited to have found you and the information you provide. I’m certain I was all of stage 2 and probably even a 3, but I’m writing this to let others know there is real truth being provided by Dr. David. Just a side note I do have a chiropractor ( not the one who said my pain was related to trauma) that I see probably once a month to keep me adjusted and she is amazing, but I now know it’s the exercises that I do daily that have benefited me absolutely the most.

That groin pain is one of the worst pains I've ever had.
I also had a knee replacement ... that had to be revised, after the original surgeon lied to me for 2 years!! It was after the revision that I started having the upper leg muscles pain. I assumed it was from having 2 knee replacements so close together. It's never improved so now I'm assuming it's my hip. I've been told I need a hip replacement now also. And, like you, I have spine issues affecting parts of every section of my spine. My fear is if I get a hip replacement will it screw up my back even worse
ANYWAY, do you want to be my best friend and we get thru this together???
      😊😉🙄
Good luck to you and I pray this works for you without surgery!

I have bone on bone hip arthritis and, predictably, I've been offered steroid injections or full hip replacement. I'd prefer neither. My husband found your video which explained how to squeeze the glutes and what happens when you walk. I went around for 2 days doing glute squeezes all day long...while I was sitting at the computer, laying down watching TV, or just walking around. It was amazing how much stronger my hip became and I'm now walking almost without a limp. I can also step sideways without fear of falling. 2 days! I will try the rest of these exercises and hope that they will help me to regain some of the range of motion loss. At the very least they are helping me to walk normally again. Thank you for your thorough videos.

Dear Sir, I could not believe strengthening the glutes would improve my walking, which had become quite bad because of bone-on-bone hip arthritis. But I did your exercises anyway, because I had nothing to loose. I did not stop the other leg-exercises I had been prescribed for a sore knee. I just systematically added the glutes-exercises and the windshield wipers. Now, after a few months, I cannot believe I am walking better than before...but I can no longer deny that I do! So thank you very much!! Who knows I may even escape from the hip- operation! I still have 'starter-stiffness', which usually disappears after a few minutes, but that is nothing compared to being barely able to walk!

These exercises worked for me. I couldn't believe it. I've been in severe pain for over a year and moderate pain for years. My leaving the house had become less and less due to severe pain from osteoarthritis in the hips and left knee. So I did these exercises last night. When I woke up the next morning I noticed something strange. There was no pain. I couldn't believe it. I was so used to pain that I literally became shocked that I had no pain. This is the first time that I've experienced no pain in years. I first thank God then I thank Dr. Middaugh for helping people feel normal again.

I'm 73 and have no mobility in my hips. I got sent to an orthopedic surgeon for an evaluation due to sudden debilitating pain in my hip last November. He did xrays and a ct scan and said it was arthritis so I needed a total hip replacement. Nobody did anything for the extreme pain. I used ice and ibuprofen on my own because the drs did nothing. They didn't seem to really care. I also used a crutch to help with weight bearing. However I saw your video about the pelvis and hip ball being grinding against each other because of weak muscles. So I have been trying what you say to do and I am having no flares of pain, no burning in the joint, My mobility is still iffy but I'm hoping it will improve over time.

    Dr. Middaugh,
My hubby Bill, had a titanium hip replacement (right hip) we went to Colorado to have our surgeries his surgery took 50 minutes, Dr. Kindsfater said he was a tough case & should have had the surgery done 2 years earlier he had to lengthen his leg as well. He also has had 3 knee surgeries, so he has huge scars where they did his surgeries. He hass knee pain too, I've been having knee pain as well.
His surgery was done first as I had to apply the TED hose every morning for 2 weeks. The last day my pain in my one wrist was so bad I looked at him & told him I couldn't do it I was crying.
The following day I went to my surgeon for counseling & that's when my surgeon noticed I had a nerve ganglion on my other wrist (I had double wrist surgeries- nerve ganglions in both & done on the same day) I'm 66 years young.
Bill's now having trouble with his left hip, & YT sent me your video on bone on bone hip pain video and I told Bill about the clam exercise & we watched this video next. He was doing the wrong exercises & we watched this video together & now he knows what exercises to do & what ones to avoid. Bill's 82 years young, but his left hip has been popping like popped corn & has me concerned.
Thank you, you have a paired subscription 👍🥰❣
We live on a sailboat, so there's constant motion. We only notice the motion when it's gusty & during tidal changes.
Once we get an exercise routein for Bill, I'll look to see if you have some exercises I can do for the pain in my wrists. I have a difficult time with lateral loads & it's something I'm unable to stop as I do all the cooking (fresh- no microwave on board by choice) hand wash dishes & hand wash clothes sometimes & hang them out to dry.
Thank you do much for sharing your knowledge with us.
Much more appreciated than you could possibly know.
    🤗 🙆‍♀️ & 🙆‍♂️❣

I love you! Such simple advice that hit the nail on the head for someone that’s been restricted by hip issues for nearly 8 years… I was given the clamshell and various leg lifting exercises after an arthroscopy operation, and I couldn’t understand why I never did them! I was cross with myself, as I knew the importance, Your breakdown and simplification of these exercises revealed to me. They were simply too hard to do straight off the bat - the warmup exercises and the simplification of the clam and the detailed instruction has been absolutely brilliant. A real game changer, I’m so grateful to you! I know this is going to help me… I cannot understand why the UK NHS, and all the physios that I met afterwards to help me rehabilitate, did not give me the same advice - less is more - Thank you so much keep up the good work🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏✋👊👏

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy First of all, thank you so much for your wonderful content. I’ve been watching your videos about hip arthritis for a while. I’m 41, not suffering for arthritis but by a synovitis caused by a contrast injected in the hip joint for doing a magnetic resonance 2 months ago. Before that I was ok, just with some pain after running but with no other problems in my day to day. Now I can’t walk more than 5 min without pain during or after, can’t ride a bycicle, driving, being sit in a chair for more than 15 min etc and doctors doesn’t seem to have the key to help me improve. My question is if this artritis exercises are also recommended for my problem, if you can give me some advice about any other ones and if you have heard about any case like mine and how to treat it (I’ve been told isn’t very common). Thank you so much in advance and excuse my english (I’m from Spain). Looking forward to hearing from you soon, and happy new year!!!

This is helpful, because i have been given the clamshell exercise many times over the past 10 years. I was doing them wrong, recruiting every muscle except the glutes. Finally, after watching this video, i started doing them correctly. I am not able to avoid surgery though, because my hips are still painful even with activated glutes. I can barely lift my leg becuase it is so locked and impinged. Having surgery next week, but glad to know i am going into it with strong glute muscles.

Thank you Dr. David, you have no idea how some of your videos helped me heal slowly, but gradually for the last two months.
I started having pain in my right hip joint in the upper front part of the flexor area, a situation has reached where I am limping when walking and cannot walk more than 100 meters.
An x-ray showed that I have cartilage erosion in both joints but mainly in the painful right joint.
I followed your TH-cam channel and did some of your exercise for hip joints,
Now two months later the joint pain is slowly starting to disappear, and so is the limp!

I would agree with all of these exercises and had been doing them for months with physiotherapist, however I found out I had a labral tear and the clam exercise made it worse. I should’ve known because it was painful to do. But the lying down and tightening your glutes is a good exercise cause you could do it before you get out of bed and when you go to bed. Thank you.

You could also do a Virtual Consultation with Dr. David so you can speak to him one on one about the details of your situation. He would then advise you and give you the next steps to take. If you'd like to learn more about our consultations please click here: www.epmanualphysicaltherapy.com/virtual-visit/
We hope you that can feel some relief soon! We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care! 🧡

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy Thank you for your suggestions and prompt answer. I have been to many physical therapists for this. Nothing was satisfactory, only lasted for a while. I will continue with certain PRI techniques that seem to be working, but nothing is quick enough. Thanks again for your exercises. They make me stronger for sure.

Hey Jacqueline, Thank you for your feedback! We are so sorry to hear that you've been dealing with hip arthritis, we are glad you're looking to get the seats changed in your car as they seem to be aggravating your pain.
Although, it is not uncommon and usually likely that hip issues then lead to back pain or vice versa it is difficult for us to address if that's the case with your situation as we don't have enough information to make the proper suggestions. We encourage you to get an assessment somewhere near you but if you want to work with us we suggest a virtual consultation.
By opting for a Virtual Consultation, you'll have the opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation with our doctors, where they can delve into the details of your condition and provide you with tailored guidance and coaching. This personalized approach ensures that you receive the individualized support and direction you need to make informed decisions about your health. I so appreciate the details you demonstrate on how to isolate the specific glut muscle for the most effective results. For someone like me who has developed patterns of unconscious movement (ADD), it makes ALL the difference. I hear so many people complain that “physical therapy” didn’t help. If you belong to an HMO, people are thrown into “group” physical therapy or just given handouts. I consider such “classes” a total waste of my time. Besides, we’re all different. Thank you, so, so, much.

You are an excellent specialist and it was your recommendations that helped me to calm my sciatic nerve.
I really like how energetically you try to instill hope, convince not to give up and I especially liked how you said that in relation to recovery we need to become obsessed!!!
However, I would like to make a small recommendation and I hope it will be useful.
You talk too much while demonstrating the exercises. Sometimes even you just start doing the exercise and immediately stop to add your explanations again and again. This is completely understandable, because any man is so arranged that he cannot fully speak and do at the same time, something will suffer. Therefore, you stop to finish the explanation.
Well, a person listening to you with hope also cannot listen and do with the same dedication, especially since sometimes it is impossible to understand when the exercise actually begins and when it ends, because you talk all the time.
Your listener should be able to do the exercise together with you , it is only reliable way , to put it off until later - it does not work.
You should demonstrate the exercises continuously, measurably, slowly from the beginning to the end and speak during the demonstration minimally only to give commands. This will give patients the opportunity to follow you. If you need to explain again, then take time between exercises. Thank you for reading.

THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME HOPE. Scheduled for left hip replacement consultation with Surgeon in Dec.2023. I’m bone on bone with barely any cartilage left and in a lot of pain. I am starting these exercises today. Hope NOT to have the surgery. Again THANK YOU!

Hey Dannus! We are thrilled to hear that we have given you hope and we want to encourage you to not give up and exhaust all options before truly considering surgery! If you do well at properly applying our suggestions and treatment strategies then you will likely experience some improvement, it's important to exercise patience and set realistic expectations as you know the recovery process may take longer than expected.

I am hoping this will help. I had sudden onset hip/groin pain about 10 weeks ago. The pain is not going away despite physiotherapy, steroids and anti-inflammatory. The pain gets better with rest, but gets worse and weaker with walking. No one knows what's going on and they won't do mri imaging so I'm trying anything I can.

I'm so glad i found your channel. I was diagnosed with hip (left) bursitis and osteoarthritis. I also have weak meniscus joints (not sure if that's the right term), more on my left knee. My kneecaps will slide out of place if i take a wrong step or hit the side of my kneecap; that has held me back or fearful of strenuous exercises. I just watched the video on what exercises to avoid and now this video on what exercises you recommend. I'm starting today! Perhaps you have a video to help with my meniscus? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and i wish you continued success. I'll definitely be sharing your videos with family and friends.

I have bone on bone x ray on my right hip. Also I have sciatica that goes to the top of my right foot sometimes. It wakes me up during the night. I was doing the 1st two exercises only once or twice a day, but my hip is worse. Starting today, I will do the 3 up to 5x to see if I can rebuild the cartilage and avoid surgery. I am doing your sciatic exercises also. Thank you.
