    ABOUT ME
    Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. I hope you'll join me in this TH-cam journey as I take you through all the tips, tricks and trade secrets I've gathered throughout the years. I hope I can teach you some of what I know, help you discover your creative voice and I hope you enjoy this Channel!

    Very well said, Margot. I wish for all online art teachers to see this. Especially number three. I realize technique is important. However, I feel part of being an artist is to find your own way to express yourself. It's not about making others happy by following rules every step of the way.

      @@Pointebrush Margot, Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry I am just now replying. I didn't get a notice until this morning about a 'like'. I happened to open it and noticed you had replied. An artist is "a person who practices any of the various creative arts". Being creative means, "relating to or involving the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work." You would think all art teachers would realize that. I'm so happy you brought this up. Thank you Margot.

    I love the comments about technique. It's the same with musicians (I play a number of instruments). I learn my scales and arpeggios, yes, but they never quite appear as the standard scale in a piece of music. You might find the scale starts in the middle but by the end of the run of notes you'll be in a different key - and all of it should be played with a flourish and flounce to convey the joy. So, in the end, the actual individual notes don't matter as much as the overall feeling the music I play conveys.
    Thanks for reminding me that this works the same in art.

      By learning my music scales, I actually have a chance of playing an ad lib part with much more experienced musicians, and maybe not be asked to leave. Or go get coffee for everybody. 🤣 By learning fundamental brush techniques, I hope to mostly save time so that I can work faster. No, I don't want to be a speed-painter, but it is important for me to somewhat compress the time between my first and last brush strokes so that I don't lose the muse, mood, or light. And so that my paints stay workable without having to add mass-quantities of medium or extenders to them...since I use acrylics.

    I just rewatched this video - and have to say that I enjoyed it even more the second time around. I too come to art from a more musical creative background and recognise that all creativity is subjective to the senses of the recipient. I think that any creative piece that can convey something to our heARTs has done what any artist of any discipline wants. We want to move and touch people, have them laugh, cry, feel, with us. Take them with us on a journey and connect with them. Thank you once again for a wonderful insightful and honest video! 💙💜

    Technique is literally the technical; it allows you to reproduce your own own work and to develop sketches into full paintings. In many art schools students get taught basic drawing and painting techniques but the focus of the work is on expression, balance and resolution of the painting, with the exception of Ateliers which teach the methods of the Old Masters.. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. There is a basic tool that can help us capture the colour of our paintings in photographs, a colour card that you place alongside your painting when you photograph it. This is used by all photographers who make a living photographing art for catalogues, etc. This allows you to adjust the colour temperature etc in the digital photograph to match the light and intensity of the colours in the digital version to the card in real life. Most cards have a reverse side with greys so that you can correct white balance. I have a degree in fine arts too but I find the biggest barrier to me, apart from fibromyalgia, is imposter syndrome. It's debilitating and robs me of any confidence to actually put paint to paper. I graduated 13 years ago and I keep stopping and starting. I'm now focusing exclusively on watercolour as there is less resistance on my shoulders plus I get breaks to let paint dry!

    Love this! I'm an untrained artist - I have just dabbled, on & off, for years. I credit the many generous artists who share their time and talent on TH-cam as my teachers - that, and much pigment applied (with varying degrees of success) to papers. I paint for the joy of it, but rarely post anything I've done because it never measures up visually to the works of artists. Maybe I'll have to take that first tip and start posting more, lol. Regarding technique - the first lessons I took in watercolor were in the form of books I read in the 1990's when my interest was sparked. At the time, all of the instruction books said "don't use black or white" or "don't use specialty colors" and other various 'rules' of 'true' watercolor. I have managed to break all these rules over the years and have gotten interesting results!

    I'm just starting out and with that, I have been soaking in a lot of content through all the platforms you mentioned. I'm not artistic (with paint and a brush), not even a little bit. My creativity is expressed in making quilts. But the idea of creating with paint and a brush really appeals to me. So I appreciate seeing varied techniques and look at them as a jumping off point, a path on the journey so to speak. As a quilter, my craft is all about precision - in following a pattern, cutting the fabric and sewing it together. For me, watercolor art represents a vehicle to be creative but without confines of being precise. All that to say, I appreciated your video and like your style of instruction -- serious about your art, a straight forward style and a great sense of humor.

    Patty-I applaud anyone who reminds us that perfection is not the goal. I gave up on perfection in any form a long, long time ago. I've never achieved so what was the point. I recently was practicing painting daisies. They didn't look like much at first but by the time I had to pack up, they were actually starting to look like daisies. That lifted me up for the whole day. They weren't perfect, but I achieved a goal. I love your videos and can't wait for the next one. 😍

    Sneaky secret: most artists online are using light boxes to trace work onto paper. It’s not “cheating,” but it’s rarely ever disclosed, leading many viewers to believe this “artist” has the fundamental skills to transfer an image to paper via hand-eye. It’s a massive shortcut to producing far more work over a period of time, without ever having to improve the skill of understanding proportions and placing them onto paper. Anyone can color inside the lines. And many on social media/YT (even watercolorists) stay generally within those lines. Beautiful images, but minimal effort.

    Synchronicity! I love it! I have been watching TH-cam videos for the past two+ years and have learned technique upon technique (and over and over again). Today I wanted to paint a flower - any flower would do. I went to my "Flower Painting" folder and saw one I thought I could try out on my new paper. The video wasn't long - somewhere between 15 to 20 minutes - but I spent all afternoon doing the flower painting. When I was done, I was ecstatic! Why? Because the person doing the video did it in real time and explained not just what she was doing, but also why she was doing it - i.e., the results we could expect. As a result, I did a segue to look up the leaf cluster for the specific flower because I wanted to add a more elaborate surrounding for the flower. My point is: this particular art teacher pulled everything together for me. Yes, I was getting a refresher in certain techniques but it was invaluable because I could see and experience how all these different techniques work to achieve the overall goal I had: how in the world do I paint this?? Very, very few 'demos' or technique teachings pull things together like this so that the viewer actually walks away feeling a sense of accomplishment - the joy of creating something from beginning to end that looks the way I had hoped.

    To semi-quote Scott Christian Sava, the artist determines what art is. He is a watercolorist TH-camr I found a year ago. • @justaskin8523
    @justaskin8523 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    Margot, I look forward to watching your videos. I paint with acrylics and not watercolors (at least not yet), but I consider you to be one of my art sensei!
    Technique is key to me, but that's only because my past experiences with painting 40 years ago had zero technique training. So now I do pull out some technique videos if I want to learn to do something better. Or faster. Or faster and better at the same time!
    College story for you...about 40 years ago, I was working on my Bachelor of Science degree in IT (well, back then we just called it "data processing"). I was loaded down with all these programming courses, from assembler to Cobol, PL/1, and more. So one quarter, I needed to take an elective. I was a Sophomore back then. No, I didn't take an art class (well, not yet anyway!). Instead, genius me, I took a TYPING class.
    You see, I was spending hours just typing in my source code for my core programming classes, which were IT. I realized that it was one of my workflow bottlenecks. Back in those days, you didn't just go type your code on a laptop in your dorm room or down in the student center. You actually had to go to the business center and sit down at a terminal. Hunting and pecking under those conditions was unacceptable to me, since I was looking at 40+ years of career work that would require...typing! So I took a typing class so that I could at least go faster in the mundane aspects of my schooling, and eventually my work.
    Well, I was the only guy in my typing class, and I was terrible. My lady classmates were very gracious about that. I think I got a C- in that class. But I got what I needed out of it. Just by learning the fundamentals of typing, (fingers on the home row), I was able to eventually adapt to the differences between an IBM Selectric typewriter and an IBM 3270 keyboard. And since programming was a lot different than typing a letter to the editor, I also had to adapt to THAT difference for coding.
    And later I became a very rapid typist for coding, then for making mass-changes on major online systems during limited planned outage windows, and eventually, to texting, IMing, and zoom chats. That one typing class didn't help my grade point; not at all. But hands down (see what I did there?), it was the most genius thing I've ever done for my career and personal life! Technique. It's not important until it is. Like when I want to paint individual leaves close-up but with single brush strokes. My art won't be any better if it takes me 15 hours. But then, I have to consider that it probably won't necessarily be any worse if it takes me 1.5 hours. But if I can do the shorter option with the same quality (through the use of technique), then I should. And if I mess it up, I have plenty of time to do a 2nd try! 😏

    Thank you Margot. Very valid points. I follow a wide variety of watercolour artists here on TH-cam and on instagram, including yourself, who all have styles very unique to themselves and as I was watching your video, I realised that although I don’t necessarily love each of their styles, or even their subject matter (I, of course have my favourites) what I do love, are their very individual personalities and ways of expressing themselves through the medium of watercolour. I learn so much through just watching their process and I value each and every teacher. At the end of the day, all art as with most things in life, is about connection. Love your videos by the way ❤

    I wish I could have seen this a year ago. Last year, at the age of 54, I decided to pick up a sketchbook and pencil set again after years (almost 40) of being away from doing art. So I took an online course and the instructor was so adamant that we learn to draw straight lines, arcs, circles, ellipses, etc. almost perfectly before we moved on to drawing actual scenes/objects. That got into my head so profoundly that after filling two sketchbooks with nothing but lines and shapes, I almost put it all down again because I just felt worse and worse about my "skills". Fortunately I gave up that instructor and didn't give up drawing (and now watercolors) and the joy is returning.

    Just when I was getting antsy about when your next video would be up. Super video. Yes, yes, and yes. I send out a weekly newsletter on creativity, and this past Tuesday's was titled, "Where is the Love?" (That Roberta Flack song). And here's an excerpt from it: And this is what I want you to remember about your creativity - and others':
    1. Creativity is more than an act, it's a relationship. Your relationship with your creativity is subject to the same challenges of any relationship. Lack of communication, falling into patterns and ruts, taking the relationship for granted, or making it low on the list of priorities. We fall in and out of love with our creative work. Because, as with any relationship, your relationship with your creativity needs commitment, compassion, caring, and nurturing.
    2. I don't care what you create, in what form, genre, material, or style, your creativity not only gives voice to your thoughts and feelings, but just as important, sometimes even more important, it often gives voice and form to someone else's. It's one reason we love (there's that word) to share creative expressions like books, art, film, music, shows, etc. with others. The work has given voice to something we've experienced, felt, or understood, or it's given form to something we couldn't until then. For this reason, never discount the power or significance of your own creativity or creative expression. You may give form and expression to something for someone who can't do it for themselves."
    Interesting to hear you talking about something similar. And my husband just showed me a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Calvin isn't coloring inside the lines and Hobbes points it out to him. His response? "But then it will just look like the picture on the box!" Oh, and also I thought you were going to say that you were going to "spill the tea." 😆

    I think what you said is quite inspiring. I almost quit because I took 6 months off due to illness. When I was ready to start back, it was if I didn't remember anything. Also, I wondered why art online looks so much more vibrant than mine at home. In fact, I was thinking about buying a piece of art just to compare what I see on the computer to what mine looks like in real life.

    Technique is not the enemy of “expression” -this is a false dichotomy. Rather, mastering technique allows one to BE more expressive because havjng that mastery is what gives you the tools to express what you want.

    • @Pointebrush
      @Pointebrush  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I never said it was one or the other. I said technique is a means for expression and I stand by that.

    Margot you are an absolute gem, a bright light and a true creative.
    For me, Art is emotion. Doesn't matter what emotion, what journey you take to get to it, what techniques you use or what supplied (generic yous!), if your end product inspires any kind of emotion, it's a success.

    Holy cow! I'm going to have this video on replay while I am painting. I was saturated with so many positive words from the beginning - use color management to "ELEVATE" your work...and it just continued from there all the way to writing down "The goal is expression not perfection!" Thank you Margot SO MUCH.

    nothing really controversial, but def good reminder that what you see online, even if its art is not always what it seems. almost everything is edited in some way.lighting,colours, parts of a finished piece of art altered digitally. People shouldnt get discouraged if things dont look exactly like what they see since what they see prob doesnt look like it seems in video 🙂
