I Failed 3 Times - But I Learned From It

  • Failure is part of painting in watercolour because we can't paint over mistakes. I often do studies before a painting to try and iron out potential problems. Sometimes I have to do several studies before I get it right. It takes time but it is time well spent. In this video, I talk about how three studies of a black cockatoo helped me to complete a successful painting.

I probably learn more from these “fail” videos than the finished tutorials. It encourages me to have patience and try again if I’m not happy with the first, second, third, fourth...go round 😏

Agreed! And it makes me laugh to see professionals start fiddling just as l do, creating more of a mess than you began with - and unhappy accidents such as painting on the wrong paper! I did a whole piece on the wrong size of paper for my frame.

Just a suggestion, a 'tip', Louise... the next time you talk about 3 or 4 different tests, works, present them side by side so that we can better compare them together...
Here, it's a little 'frustrating' because you tell us about the problems encountered, but we don't see the tests together anymore, except briefly here and there... It would have been much better for us with an image on screen and these 4 tests together !!
Thx for your works and thoughts.

I totally agree. It's almost as frustrating as sorting through extraneous details before you get to the promised "Five things you should NEVER do when...", only to discover it was clickbait . A succinct list, or as in this case, a side-by-side comparison would facilitate the message.

So valuable, Louise. After 5 tries on a painting, all I could think of was the days wasted and I gave up, frustrated, in tears. I tried to tell myself it was a learning opportunity but couldn’t face trying and failing again when I should have used the knowledge I’d gained. Thank you so much! I will give the cockatoo a go. I love the new outfit you’re wearing. So attractive! ♥️

You're a gem! I like this lesson particularly because it is true of all art media. I really tried to keep this in mind when I was learning pottery. What I find interesting is that the more practiced one gets at their craft, the harder it is to remember to let frustrations go and learn from mistakes. It is easy to become impatient with ourselves. I always remind myself that every vessel or piece has something to teach me, especially the failures.

Thanks. I thought I was being too picky when I felt like I need to do a painting two or three times before I get it just right. When I use masking fluid, I always try to leave the pencil mark uncovered, as I find it's difficult to erase after I remove the masking fluid later.

Your third "failed" painting looked like you could add bright spots of colour to resemble stars as the yellow face marking looked like the sun or bright galaxy. Not sure if that makes any sense at all but I thought it was quite inspiring :D

Awesome advice. It’s so helpful when you show what went wrong as you were painting- it explained what has happened to me before on paintings. Also thank you so much for that comment about the Fabriano Artistico paper. That was my problem with colors lifting just like they did for you. I thought that the problem was me as a beginner painter. I had finally gotten so frustrated that I quit using the Fabriano and in desperation bought some Arches CP instead. Wow - the issues magically disappeared but I was still not convinced it wasn’t my inexperience that was the issue. Apparently I’m not as bad as I thought! 🎊Congratulations 🎈 on opening up your own online classes & school Louise!! That’s fantastic news! Okay I thought that they were all 😊 great, but I have only been painting for about five years now. After watching your explanation on what you felt was wrong with your study piece I kind of understood why you felt that they were not your best. In the third study I actually saw & agreed that the paint was lifting as well. Something that has been happening in my paintings recently but I felt like it was blending correctly but after it dries it wasn’t for me. So I am glad you shared this video of information with us. Thank you for this video. I've only recently begun my watercolor journey and had been enjoying trying different papers. I've been able to work with most, discovering their various quirks and attributes. But a recent attempt on Bockingford frustrated me to no end: the paint lifted if I even so much as waved my brush over it! Yes, I was trying to layer, but I thought I was doing something wrong. I was intrigued to see that your 3rd attempt was doing to you the same thing the Bockingford did to me. For some odd reason, your frustration with it was comforting to me, confirming what I suspected: various papers can have decidedly different responses to paint. Thank you for the encouragement to learn from these attempts and thank you for your generosity in sharing your skills here on TH-cam.

Louise, I feel like you’re talking to me! I’ve made so much progress, learning from you, but I sure do feel like I backslide at times. I thought I’d attempt that King Charles spaniel puppy, and once I got to the head, I immediately ran into problems. I ended up lifting some areas, letting them dry, and then trying again. Some areas look overworked because of this. BUT, I decided to keep going because I thought I could learn from my mistakes. Surprisingly, it’s ending up (so far) looking better than I expected. It’s not a master piece by any stretch, but I figured some things out that worked for me. I can see where I need more practice. I had a lot of trouble getting in the small hairs that combine with the brown and white ares of the face. I can draw that line, and work on flicking my brown into the white area. In some cases, I think I used too small or too large a brush. This is definitely a painting I’d like to try again. These are the things that make you such a good instructor. Thank you, as always!

Hi Louise, I just watched your last video about questions asked, brilliant! I struggle with the wetting canvas thing, I still have a question relating to that, after wetting the canvas I guess you let it dry out completely before taping it down and sketching onto it? If so, how long could you leave a stretched canvas for before painting on it? Could you stretch a bunch and store them ?

    • @LouiseDeMasi
      @LouiseDeMasi  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi Micky, I let it dry overnight. I do a few at a time so that they are ready for me when I want to paint. You can leave them on the board as long as you need to. They need to stay attached to the board when you are painting on them.

I have a question about aquarell technique:if i mix wet blue in wet red paint and obtain purple, then if i draw wet blue on DRIED red i obtain purple too,but i think this time it appears somehow different (same for anything wet-on-dry)?Is it so,or am i just imagining?I know that layering the colours (wet-on-dry)is a different technique in aq.then blending them,so maybe it is an effect of its own, even though the mixing colours are the same?

Even if I can understand that You doing mistakes I still didn't think it is about the same mistakes, crazy I guess. Trying to correct imidiate thought You know it's not a good idea. This makes me feeling a bit better about my paintings. SO, not that I want You to do Your marvelous paintings on Your 1st try, it feels good to see that it's not that big issue, we're all doing them - no matter what or whom.

Hi Louise, for the third study you say your mistake was using cold press paper but did you mean hot press?

The third mistake was painting on Fabriano Artistico. I used cold press. It's a beautiful paper to paint on but colours lift really easily on it....so it wasn't a good choice for the dark subject that I was painting.

Not a fan of masking fluid: expensive, not always reliable, and gets lumpy fast = more expense buying a new jar.

Your opinion of your art is very subjective as you go through the process. I find that if I enjoy the process then I usually like the piece also.
