    Just read the article. She put the house up for sale. Her son noticed about 5 people measuring the driveway. From one of them she found out she guy claimed to be the landlord and was getting quotes to get the driveway replaced. When confronted, he said it was a mistake and he gave them the wrong address. Said it would never happen again. Next thing you know, her driveway is gone. This guy continues to say he was not involved.

      There are a couple of options. Either there's some contractors trying to generate more work for themselves via there now being a new job needing to be done. This doesn't seem likely, since they can't controll if they get hired to make the new driveway.
      Another option is just a mistake, where the contractors were hired to remove a driveway and went to the wrong address. That feels more likely to me, and there's been some other stories like that recently as well.

    The scam is this: You call a company and say you need a new driveway at that isn't your address. Then you send them a hot check for more than the cost they quoted you. Then you ask them to send you a check for the difference. In this case, the company just started the replacement before clearing the check or checking with the homeowner.

    They could also be working for construction companies (hence having the heavy equipment) so they can cause more sales - tear away a driveway, make them come to a company for a new one - especially if they aren't officially part of the company that swoops in and offers a great 'deal' to put a new driveways down. And the asphalt can be crushed down to make new pavement as well. So they are gaining a resource.

    I'm also wondering if it's a billing scam of sorts, like those "companies" that send a business a couple of broken or empty printer cartirdiges and then send a huge invoice to the finance department. They could be sending photos to insurance companies with invoices to try to get payments. Though devaluing the home intentionally is a decent potential option too, especially if there's few buyers.

  • @Zayphar
    @Zayphar 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    How the Scam Works:
    A scammer calls a construction company and asks 'how much to take away my driveway(paint my house/take down my roof)? I need it done right away.', the company says '$1000'. The scammer says 'go ahead I'll send you a check.' A check for $1500 arrives by FedEx at the Co and so they go out to the house and pull up the driveway. The scammer calls back and says 'There was a mistake, I overpaid you'. The Co says 'yes, I'll remburse you the $500 you overpaid'. So they send a check to the scammer for $500. The construction co gets a call from their bank a week later telling them the check for $1500 bounced, then mentions that the $500 check you sent the scammer has alread been cashed.
    Victim #1 - the construction company is out $500 plus the cost of doing the job; Victim #2 - the lady who now has to pay $10,000 to get her driveway/roof repaired; Scammer - walks away with $500.

    In Detroit they have problems with people stealing bricks from the row-houses to resell for new builds. You get a situation they call "Doll housing" where only one or two of the row houses are occupied, and the back brick walls are completely removed from the row houses and by the time the tenets notice, its often too late and the buildings start collapsing.

    For those curious, the concrete is valuable. We are actually running out of the resources to make concrete. Most concrete in new condos, housing, and most developments is recycled and re-broken down from demolished buildings & industrial complexes. Toronto in Canada is a hot spot for this, and it shows as our expressways and escarpment have been falling apart for years due to this exact reason (reused concrete vs new). I hope the limestone mix psuedo roman concrete they just figured out in Japan last year helps fix this growing issue.

    My guess would be the person who "stole" the driveway runs a paving company so they rip up and take someone's driveway and then make an offer to re-lay the driveway (with the homeowner obviously not knowing it was them who ripped up the driveway in the first place) when the homeowner is looking to replace it at either an artificially "low" price or a ballooned price. Then they'll replace the person's driveway (maybe even using the very driveway they stole as the materials) and make a bunch of money only on labor.

    I watched somewhere that how the scam works is that they would call a construction company ask them to do something on the outside of the house(since they cant enter it) give them a false check and overpay with it but before they try to submit the check they ask for the money they overpayed in cash.

    Even simplier - he is just forcing her to pay for driveway replacement, since he has a cut in it.
    Concrete is easy to dispose of competely unnoticed, so there would be no material evidence to connect the person offering replacements to seemingly "random" bulldozer driver. No evidence - means it cannot be charged as theft (needs possession of stolen property). And they never pronounced any threats, so it cannot be charged as extortion, as well.
    "Some guy just mixed up houses and removed wrong driveway, yeah, happens all the time, dudes driving bulldozers tearing driveways, yeah, idk. But, I understand now you need a new driveway - what a coincidence, I happen to offer exactly these services, can offer you some discount for your situation"
