Shadwell (East London Line) was my local tube station when I was a kid. The station, even in the early 1970's, was like a beautiful time warp - with, for some reason, a waiting room in the ticket hall......pretty pointless given the many, many steps down to the platform! I adored the older 1938 red trains that ran on the E.L. Line; such happy memories of first falling in love with the London Underground. 😍

There is a test tunnel in the New Cross area. It was bored in 1969 and the trial tunnelling machine is abandoned at the end of the run. Today, the ground above it is checked for subsidence now and again. The tunnel is too hazardous to enter and is blocked off.

It appeals greatly to me that at 2:18, the words "Surrey Docks" can be seen on screen as they're being spoken despite the station not having carried the name for over 30 years.

I recently came across plans dating from around the same time of the Lewisham plan (perhaps a bit later) to extend it east towards Stratford and potentially beyond to Ilford and Hainault I believe it was. The plans were aimed, not at redeveloping the Docks but easing congesting and so the plans somewhat take over that of the Chelney to a partial degree. Found it as a bit of a sidenote to Crossrail plans being developed by British Rail as they were taking the tube into account but most of the focus was on mainline alternatives to relieving congestion. There is a free pdf of the original planning booklet on a National Rail library of sorts.

When I came to London in 1969 it was immediately apparent that some parts of London had poor transport connections, and people had to us busses instead of the tube and then they might have to change busses as well.
The part of London I moved to was one example. Now it is one of the best connected area to live having access to all the major transport hubs.

The first section route of the DLR, from Tower Gateway followed what would have been the Jubilee Line’s route, it was the compromise from the Government when the LDDC was set up, to provide a transport link. The Jubilee Line was left unfinished thanks to Margaret Thatcher winning the 1979 General Election and she hated railways, she wanted to have the rail network ripped up and replaced by a motorway network when she came to power. She pulled the plug on the Jubilee Line, which only got extended on it’s current route, when a private company threatened to build their own underground railway from Docklands into the City as the DLR couldn’t cope with the increased passenger load as Docklands grew.

London, like New York is complicated, and with the suburbs,it's downright daunting to an outsider! I know a bit about London, but only from videos, and a ton of reading! Also was a published author, and was taught in high school, just how to write and edit a good story!(Also put 3 years on the Yearbook, during my time there,so I speak from experience)! With the terrible state of TfL and Government finances, the Bakerloo Line extension to Lewisham and beyond is likely to suffer the same fate as the Fleet Line extensions of the 70s and indeed all previous attempts to extend the Bakerloo Line...

Hi. The route you describe here was never known as the River Line it was just Stage III of the Fleet Line. The River Line was the route that you're probably going to do next, the one that did go through the heart of the Docklands and was to reach Thamesmead. No criticism meant here but as an ex London Transport employee around at the time just wanted to point this out. Enjoy your videos by the way. Cheers.

If the Jubilee Line was extended from Charing Cross to Fenchurch Street and Canary Wharf then it would of been built close by to the River Thames. And could of been called "Fleet Line". Probably. And probably would of extended to New Cross and New Cross Gate. Adding the Fleet Line to the tube map if it existed.

Surrey Quay's or what we called Surrey Docks before the spoilt rich brats took over, one of my oldest friends still lives near there refusing to move out and make way for some chinless prat, think he is the last of my mates still living in South London. Dire Straits, Michael Caine and Tommy Steele were all locals there and the Specials Ghost Town video shot all around London Bridge, Deptford and docks. The problems facing the trains is the chokepoint of New Cross to St Johns/Lewisham where 4 lines is simply not enough to take the traffic of another operator due to the congested nature of that section of line. I think the only viable way would be to drop a spur from the St Johns to Hither Green under the flyover on the slow lines down to the Hayes line there but it does mean more trains getting in the way of already busy Kent lines via Hither Green and may herald the long long needed remodelling of St Johns and even the demise of St Johns as a station which has crossed the railways minds before. It does seem my late father who started his signalling career at North Kent East signalbox, always said the Bricklayer's line would rise again in the future, he was wrong that the Liverpool St to Shoreditch link would be reinstated though.

Such a pity the original Fleet line wasn't built. A much more useful route and stations for connectivity and reducing congestion on other routes and. Instead we have the Jubilee line. Only built to connect commuters arriving at Waterloo station with Canary Wharf to encourage companies to move to the new office developments there. No doubt aimed at the inhabitants of the posh suburbs served by trains from Waterloo Who would be reallocating to the new offices, who previously used the Waterloo & City line to reach Bank station in the City.
