Kia ora. They are called poi (rhymes with boy). Originally used by our men in the olden days as part of flexibility and hand eye co-ordination training to wield weapons such as 'Mere' (clubs) but as the years have passed the ladies adopted them too for dance and entertainment. They are good for percussion too.

If you’re interested look up Poi E by Patea Māori Club, basically the first Māori song (waiata) to be commercially released (that I’m aware of) in the 1980s. The men (tane) are using taiaha (spears) and the women (wahine) are using poi.

In the second world war at the battle of Crete the New Zealand Moari battalion were asked to attack the German Paratroopers who were concided an elite fighting force. The Moari Battalion stood up and preformed a spontaneous Haka before charging at the Germans. War historians agree that this act unsettled the Germans and the Moari 3rd Battalion became a legend of second world war history. They won the fight that day. At the battle of Casino in Italy the Moari Battalion famously played a game of Rugby and rumours were some went pig hunting to have a cook up before again preforming a Haka and attacking the Germans. I had the privilege of meeting some of the Moari Battalion men and others who were at both battles. The stories they shared I carry with me. The word they share in Moari is" Kia Kaha". The fight for the pride of their family, for their ancestors and each other. They fought for "Aroha" (love) for each other. At the end of the battle for Crete the New Zealand forces had the highest casualties of all the allied forces because they hated to lose.

@@carolinethompson6592 Actually it's Māori. And hey, let's just be grateful that this Pākehā knows the story of our ancestors in the Māori battalion! Thank you for knowing this. And let me just tell you that the fight for the pride of our family, our wairua, our language, our turangawaewae is present in more then just going to war.

You might want to check out SIX60-Tomorrow and SIX60-Raining. These are probably their only songs with the Irie feel. But all their songs are bangers
SiX60 is the only NZ band that sells out stadiums like this. They are actually doing something no other NZ artist/Band has ever done. On the 24th of April they have on concert at Eden Park (NZ biggest stadium) which is normally only what the big international artists use like U2, Beyoncé, Foo Fighters etc. They are planning to sell that out 💪. Keep the good work up 🤙.

Hahaha.... C'mon bro atleast put up a fight, it is a challenge after all, although the outcome may not change, we'll still respect you more 😇😂
That house at the beginning is how Six60 formed and got their name, the founding members met while attending University of Otago. The band created their name from the street number of the house they lived at in Dunedin, 660 Castle Street. As Ji Fraser said, "That's where it all began. Six60 is the biggest band in NZ but may soon be surpassed by L.A.B. They have plenty of great music, can't wait for you to dive into their catalogue.
With the exception of the closed borders everything in NZ is back to normal so we are able to have outdoor events such as concerts. Kiwi's are a pragmatic bunch, we way up the pros and cons when dealing with challenging situations (such as Covid), then we do what's best for NZ (not the individual) as a country, short term pain for long term gain, which is why we are Covid free and will be opening up a Trans-Tasman bubble with Aussie on the 19th April, so Aussie's & Kiwi's can travel between the 2 countries unrestricted, no quarantining required.
The “POI” (pronounced like Poi-nt, just drop the 'nt') is the word for “ball” on a cord. Many years ago Maori used it to increase their flexibility and strength in their hands and arms as well as improving coordination.
Great reaction bro, glad to see you appreciating and wanting to learn more about our culture. Maybe there's someone out there that can create a Haka (and/or tattoo) specific to you, your whanau and culture. Sorry not my area of expertise but I'm sure someone will point you in the right direction.
Indigenous peoples around the world still look to Māori for leadership and guidance th-cam.com/video/XEMU2Is4D40/w-d-xo.html
Better start practicing for when you get here, we'll be expecting you to get your 'Haka On' !!! 😂👍
Some of my personal favourites to get you started
Including - Kia Mau Ki Tō Ūkaipō / Don't Forget Your Roots
    - Lost ft Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra vimeo.com/57816646
    - Rest Of You
    - Only To Be
    - Forever
    - Closer (Lyric Video)
    - Don't Give It Up
    - Up There
    - White Lines
..... there are so many, anything of there's is a banger. I'm sure one of the cuzzies will fill you in.
I was going to include a link to that concert then quickly realized you'd hear their other music, almost spoiled it 😌

(gold pass you get at 65 cheap buses and ferry tickets) HE said this isn't a joke. My answer was dude this is my life and I'll deal with it the way I always deal with things i can't change I take the PISS out of it otherwise you can go down some dark rabbit holes he then asked me if I smoke pot? Yes I do. Well that's not going to help he said. Oh yeah it helps to control the migraine headaches that none of your MEDS help at all haven't been back not interested in the narrow minded medical services within 6 weeks of smoking my headache that was controlling my every moment awake was just a bit of a back ground pain instead of mind numbing pain so I deal with these little speed humps with humour I still forget shit all the time I frequently stop mid sentence and have no idea what i was just talking about.
