  • Iván Vallejo is a mountaineer from Ecuador. On May 1, 2008, he finished his "Desafio 14" -- a personal quest for reaching the summit of all 14 mountains above 8,000 m, without the use of supplemental oxygen.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

On the one hand, climbing Everest without oxygen is of course a super human effort that deserves every recognition for its extra-ordinariness
On the other hand, using no oxygen etc. is a aesthetic criterion which in the end is arbitrary. Of course also the no-oxygen climbers use technical assistance, in fact tons of it - starting with suits from expensive synthetic materials that otherwise only astronauts wear, or highly processed food that comes straight from chemical factories and is nothing that normal alpineers would ever eat. In fact these things are necessary in part to compensate for lack of oxygen, and it is absurd that they would not count as technical assistance while oxygen does.
In short, everybody should be free how he wants to tackle such a super-human challenge as long as he or she does not create harm to others. Implying though that one way would somehow be more natural or even morally better than another is really nonsense.

As you say, even using crampons, tents, sleeping bags or insulating clothing is an aid so in this sense placing importance on oxygen is rather arbitrary. But choosing a more direct and minimalist form of climbing typically means superior skill and endurance and this is what the climbing community acknowledges.

  • @Antares2

If you want "real" contact with the mountain, shouldn't you climb completely without any gear? By that logic, isn't crampons, ice axes and ropes also distancing you from the "real" mountain?
Not to mention sherpas and all the other gear you use, like radios, gps and so on.
The only reason people set this arbitrary limit on themselves is because it can still be done without oxygen, and they think it gives them slightly more respect because it's that much harder. I think it's kind of silly, especially when people who die could have survived if they had used extra o2.
