  • Plumbing Making Sales or Giving Options?! - Questions ONLY a Plumber Can Answer
As a plumber do you see yourself as a salesman? When you get called out to a job, is your end goal ultimately trying to sell a new product to the customer or do you try and explain the different repair options that are available to the customer? If you are a homeowner, can you tell when a handyman or tradesperson is trying to hardcore sell you on a product you know you don't need? Sometimes a simple repair is all you need to return your system what new...other times it could be a whole lot more, which requires selling/buying products from the company you hired. In this video, I will discuss what I think every handyman and tradesperson should be doing on every job they get called out for. Make the sale or give them options? Enjoy!

Option #1 should be the highest recommended option. The second should fix the issue with any prevention. The third should be the minimum fix. As shown in multiple studies, when doing it lowest price first, the client has to justify to themselves to spend more money than they need to. Starting high, now they have to think about losing the benefits of the recommended options over the minimum repair.

Commission based pay is always about sales. I’m living proof that honest diagnosing and good communication can lead you to having a successful career. Options are very important. Don’t listen to other dishonest plumbers taking advantage of their customers. You DON’T have to do that to be successful.

Used to work at a call centre. they wanted us to do hardcore forced sales at the end of the call. I basically said F that during my time there as I did not believe in most of the services I was selling. I was there to fix their problem and if a sale issue was a part of that problem then I would happily give them options

I'm glad you made a video about this. I was just arguing with someone in your chats about this recently. I've always been about giving people a complete overview about what is going on, and what options they have to fix it

as a home owner i rather have 3 or 4 options in front of me. i hate a mini split installed by one company and they did an amazing job. our central went down and i saw a hvac guy on fb and asked him a question. he got out in a day or two checked it out and topped it off. gave us a quote with a few options for a new system since our was 25 years old and i was looking to get it replaced one day. 3 months later the blower motor decided to head out and he was the first guy i called. he got us taken care of before the next big heat wave even though it meant a long work day. i now am a loyal customer

It's all about options, pressure sales is a thing of the past and going the way of the dinosaur.

In my experience you want to take the customer with you and tell them the options while there walking with u then provide them the options on your tablet or paper then don’t explain it again because you already did when u brought them along .. way easier then explaining after without actually showing them ..

I used to give folks the " bandaid " options. I would tell then that it was temporary, and even note it on the invoices. After several callbacks to come fix "bandaids" that WAY outlasted their expected life(for free), I don't offer that any more. When I was having to look into contracts and paperwork to avoid legal liability for the "band aids".... It was just too much bullsh!t. Now I tend to say " You can patch that up with (insert process here) , or I can do this." This mainly bit me with patching water services going to houses. When they start to fail, you fix the weak spot, then the next weakest spot goes out a couple weeks later.... I hear folks saying "This guy fixed this two weeks ago", I never hear them saying " Well, he did say it was only temporary".

Oh man thanks for this vid on sales….I love service and repair but the sales practice a few years ago scared me away….the option and upfront pricing is way better…started service and repair with a new plumbing company going on two months now

I guess you could say that the construction industry is more about sales when it comes to elective upgrades and renovations.

There is a very easy way to give options within any dinasoar fixture. If a repair is desired that's fine, state price being slightly below a replacement within a modern fixture. If they still choose to repair the relic triceratops fixture, warranty doesn't apply. If replacement they agree towards, you can go above min 1-year warranty, if you feel the customer deserves this, and-or just to give them more than the competition does within the 1-year joke warranty. Many customers pay quite a bit towards there houses, setting yourself apart from others joke 1-year warrantys, is setting milestones. You now have life long repeat customers, for most part, enivtable they will remember this, also the person who gave them this. Exception would be an existing old fixture that highly probable will crumble within just verbal decibals, as you and the customer are standing in front of the fixture, discussing best way to solve the problem. Repair is out to lunch in oblivious form.

As a sales person. Sometimes we think with our wallet vs the customers. Get that out from f your head. Give them the options and let them make the decision

When my guys calling say that the customer can’t afford it and they have slab leaks I tell them to give them a financing option or to ask them if they have a friend or family that can give them a loan or something that they can pawn or sell because it must to be done and it can’t wait any longer

Call your local banking institutions about opening a financing account with them to allow you to finance to your clients. That it is if you run across it enough that makes it still profitable for you. I use Wells Fargo Financing. They have better approval rates.

The only thing I find it hard to give options for is to repair an old 3 handle shower valve. If it’s not a Central Brass I don’t even bother to touch it.
