This documentary is a perfect example of why Steve Albini was such a great producer. He never let his ego get in the way of the band's creativity and individuality ,yet he was extremely creative in his own right. His work will live on.
It's astonishing how even the people who created this album seem unaware of its impact on music and culture. Surfer Rose was the architectural blueprint for what would come to be known as indie rock in the 90's. It's just the complete package sonically and visually. The music is dark, profound, gorgeous and terrifying. It's perfect in it's imperfections.
I remember hearing the pixies for the very first time in 1991… looking back it’s hard to overemphasis just how different they were, and what a refreshing impact they had on your ears.. it was like someone slapping you awake and reminding you what “real” music was
I saw Frank Black in SF around '95. Joey Santiago was in the band and when he took one of his few solos the. entire. room. leaned stage right where he was conjuring this other-worldly sound.
Kim Deal is a spirit animal. I don't care what anyone says. When she's out of The Pixies..you can hear it. Thanks for doing this on such a pivotal album.
Her bass lines were okay and it's good to keep in mind those basslines were centered around Frank's songs. And her backing vocals were good, but they were just that. Backing vocals to Frank's songs. The Breeders are "meh" at best. So I agree Kim had an important role and did add some magic to the band. But it's also easy to give her too much credit. Frank and Joey really are the melodic foundations to the band with David keeping it together. Seeing how toxic and demanding Kim was, not to mention her inflated ego, it's good she's gone. She never liked playing second fiddle to Frank even though his songs are the reason they became what they were. Her few monotonal contributions did not make the legacy of the band.
@@ricopaulson1 I think The Breeders blow away The Pixies. I can say The Pixies were groundbreaking but Kim is a better song writer .. the last releases from The Pixies shows their not any where they used to be. But that last Breeders album is amazing.. That's just my opinion ..
I want thought that because I lived in Detroit Michigan, which is only several hours away from Dayton, Ohio, that I could try to date Kim deal somehow… It’s been a long and winding road but the battle plan is still in play and I’ve put so much thought and effort into it that I can’t imagine her saying no… Eventually… If I ever build up the courage, that is… And, if that doesn’t work, do you know that Kelly is the easier of the two deal twins ha ha, ha ha ha! That was terrible, but I think I’m still in love with the both of them almost equally amen.
Wildly interesting. Surfer Rosa was already in my top whatever records of all time, but hearing them explain their tricks and techniques it really adds to the admiration
I was 17 when I first heard this, 1994…blew my mind.(This album, Built to Spill’s 1st album, Dino Jr, Flaming Lips, lots of stuff out of Olympia WA, luvved late 80s early 90s music🖤.)
This video is fantastic. Surfer Rosa is such a brilliant record and has been my favorite album since I first heard it decades ago. It’s just great music. The snare on 1 & 3 instead of 2 & 4 in Bone Machine is such smart songwriting. All the songs are….Black Francis’ tongue in cheek somewhat dark but funny lyrics mixed with Kim’s angelic harmonies is a 100% winning combination. 🔊😊🎶 As much as I miss Kim in the band, and her shoes were huge shoes to fill, Paz is doing as good a job as anyone possibly could. They’ll always be my favorite band, so much so, I’ve got their logo tattooed on my arm, and my icon kinda gives it away anyway…..
This was fantastic. Thank you so much for making it. This album is such an important part of my past, when all that mattered was music. It was fascinating to hear the back story behind the making of it.
Agree. I was in a small town in Nebraska and my only escape from hillbillys was music. We had a record store and one dude there would always tell me what to get. I was like 14 when I bought this and I must have listened to 200 times the first day I got it. I had my headphones and I was mesmerized.
This is so cool to listen to! To hear their thoughts behind their INCREDIBLE songs...! I love it when Santiago talks about the rhythm section ' we always love our rhythm section. you've got to let the audience enjoy it too.' Wow did they achieve that in their music... The rhythm is something that absolutely makes them unique, and yes it is Sooooo enjoyable...!!
Much like my first listen to Reign in Blood..Surfer Rosa was a “ I’m in here w IT….not the other way around situation” and many many things had just changed forever….
I grew up a fan of the early Boston punk scene, from 77' on, and had witnessed many bands I felt could've and, more importantly, should have been famous. By the time The Pixies arrived, and yes, that's how I first knew them. I figured this is just another band that I love that will be forgotten. So glad I was wrong and so glad they have had their continued success. BTW they really didn't have as much acclaim in the eighties!
i bought this on LP when it was released. i was 17/18 years old. although i had heard a lot of independent rock/college rock/punk there was really nothing quite like this album.and i had never heard about them at all. and i followed 4AD bands. they were never written about in zines zilch, zero, no underground presence. and albini mentions that 1:11:24. i loved the room ambience of it, the weird exchange between Black Francis and Deal, odd guitar interplay and "off"solid drumming and the lyrics...the lyrics! thanks steve
Watching this doc, it made one sad that Charles & Kim couldn't coexist better. They really couldve been the Alt rock Beatles, not that they weren't amazing even with their dysfunctional partnership
@@attentionseekermc interesting.thanks for the reply. I'd forgotten I cared about this. So somewhere there is a Surfer Rosa version of Gouge Away? That would be cool
There used to be a 4disc bootleg called The Definitive Pixies that was floating around 10 years back that had plenty of early recordings from demos and radio appearances from 86-87 before they made Surfer Rosa. Could probably still find it with some heavy googling. To my knowledge, there isn't a recording of Gouge Away but plenty of other songs made it onto other records. Here Comes Your Man, Subbaculta and Wave of Mutilation for example.
I knew nobody who liked this band in 1987, you had to find them and as ever John Peel was that conduit. Even this album wasn’t a big thing in 1988 which is crazy but it made it yours and it made it really special. Nowadays it’s the opposite, very average and tediously derivative new bands get rammed down your throat every day, fresh out of university. God help us.
RIP Steve Albini, truly one of a kind.
Please tell me you're joking dude!?? For real. How the hell did I not know this. Ok I'm googling it as one would do in this generation.

RIP Steve. You were great.
Rest in peace Steve Albini
You are missed 🖤🔥
What a masterpiece. A brilliant band and a unique producer.
Steve Albini will leave a huge empty space.
This might be the BEST Pixies thing that I have EVER heard......
Thank you SO much!!!!
So many details I’ve been wondering about for so long
Ok thank you Santiago... Now, after 35 years, I hear Prince's 'Kiss' on Bone Machine.
Can't unhear it now.

Surfer Rosa is such a masterpiece. Few albums in my opinion can be considered this but this is definitely one of them

First band I ever saw live.. Changed my life.
What a way to start your history of concerts!
I saw them as an opening band and they blew my mind. I’ve been hooked ever since.
I remember getting ‘Gigantic’ on an NME tape so I went and bought the album. I still have the tape.
This is so great (same with the one on the Violent Femmes and the one on the Replacements...more please)

“where is my mind” was a single to me way before Fight Club.
never thought Santiago’s voice would sound so close to Coach McGuirk
You guys rock and need more listeners/subs! Please keep doing these

All these years later Surfer Rosa still sounds amazing and as fresh as a daisy, albeit one doused in something unholy.

Nothing better than artists who speak plainly and with a sense of humour. Great stuff.
Oh my golly, ohhh my golly..
Wow, this was great, thank you!!! It would be fantastic with a Meat Puppets episode.
really well done.
This album is at once mad, and totally inevitable.
Hearing The Pixies is like taking the first bite of a Pop-Tart. Eat song is another yummy bite. And each box of Pop-Tarts is another album.
I really enjoyed SURFER ROSA and COME ON PILGRIM,the latter records were good, but the first two were exelent
I always think "Doolittle" is my favorite Pixies until I listen to "Surfer Rosa." Albini's influence, I think.
Its true , kim does sound like shes smiling when shes singing. As said during the gigantic segment.
Awesome
It's probably the most live sounding album they've done and also their most experimental (using production tricks). Quite a juxtaposition.
Watching this doc, it made one sad that Charles & Kim couldn't coexist better. They really couldve been the Alt rock Beatles, not that they weren't amazing even with their dysfunctional partnership
they were the alternative rock Beatles (whatever that means), beefs included.
The classic Beatles line-up could barely keep it together longer than 5 years either lol
@@garrettramirez428 Very good point👍
Who was the cover model? Awesome bressassuss
Jack Endio and Steve Albini are the best engineers on earth.we loved and will miss you dearly Steve.🌹
Led zeppelin was my favorite quiet to loud band
What song did they take off the track listing? Is it available anywhere?
Gouge away fits the description

Passenger is Am/F/C/G // Am/F/C/E not very similar but i can kinda hear it in the strumming pattern
Now I can't UN Hear it lololol
You can tell that Kurt Cobain loved the Pixies and wanted to work with Steve Albini.

'Where is my mind' made Fight Club unforgettable.
Isn't "Gigantic" about Paul Bunyan? I've always thought that
It's about an interracial couple.

Im sorry but this LP is their best sounding best vibe I listen to this LP the most ...I love Doolittle but it sounds a too overproduced
interesting; i allways like how they do things....ha ha ha i have a thing with female bass players (lol)
