I'll take that amazing moniker and never be embarrassed. And recoil is a strong term willy my boy.
"Fate" is their "Oh yes, we can rock the fuck out!" song. I waited 19 years to hear how it actually ended after listening to the Vs. version, where the tape ran out.
It's interesting that I recall reading that Tom didn't really like LAD for some reason. That surprised me as I love the record.
lali puna gets mentioned !!!
"Valerio" is the best album closer of all time.
The Band was not the same without Stan Lynch. Excellent drummer; essential to the sound. LAD is by far their best record, and the new bonus disc just elevates the album even more.
please do one for from a a basement!!!!!
Wonderful and original. I am always puzzled (50 years) why Richard's solo on the Julie Covington version is so bland and cliched: was it a parody?
I fuckin knew "Pride" was influence by "Elegant View" by Colour Revolt 🤟🏻🤟🏻
This is wonderful. Thank you
thank you for this, hope you keep doing this podcast
I never got too far without a little Big Star -
As someone who was in Buzzov-en almost from the beginning and took EyeHateGod on their first tour, I can tell you that while the Melvins aren't considered part of the sludge genre, they have influenced it as much as bands like Black Flag, Black Sabbath, Sick Pleasure, Code of Honor, Metallica, Nirvana, Flipper, Fang, early Neurosis, Mudhoney, the original C.O.C., Kiss, Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. All of these bands have played an equal role in shaping the genre, and the most ironic thing about sludge metal is that it is actually a subgenre of punk rock, not metal. Buzzov-en and EyeHateGod were punk rockers who played their unique brand of punk in punk rock clubs alongside other punk bands. However, when metal fans heard us, they liked it and claimed it as metal. The same goes for grindcore; Napalm Death were punks playing their version of punk rock, and metal fans decided to classify it as metal. On one tour Buzzov-en did, we played with Cathedral, Bolt Thrower, Offspring, and Green Day. Cathedral and Bolt Thrower remarked that we had the heaviest punk rock they'd ever heard, while Offspring and Green Day said we played the coolest metal they had ever heard. Also, we considered ourselves to be more inline with what Neurosis was doing than EyeHateGod but we were a good fit for touring due to the similarities in personality and music. I always see Crowbar being mentioned as sludge but even though they were tied to EyeHateGod, no one in Buzzov-en really was into them or had a personal relationship with them, but other bands like Grief, and -(16)- that we played and toured with were our friends and we liked what they were doing. We alsway viewed Crowbar in the same vein as Trouble and The Obsessed. But, as I said, metal heads decided it was metal and put bands that weren't part of our scene into the subgenre.
Settle an argument for me if you don't mind: "Is Robin Hood, Punk Rock?" I debated yes. TY for any response. ❤
Best track on the album.
Copped the record played the opening song people thought I was a rockstar
💞❤️🩹
I reckon it inspired the brass on When an old cricketer leaves the crease by Roy Harper. Reckon, mind you, I’ve done no research…
Back in the ‘80s, I happened to be watching A&E’s standup comedy program, Evening at the Improv, a show that only rarely had musical guests. And all of a sudden, there’s Richard-solo with electric(!) guitar-singing “Withered and Died” (perfect for a comedy club?-well, maybe not). I wish I’d VCR’ed it.
Wonderful. A song that has followed me through my life. Thank you Richard.
brilliant. love to hear richard’s working style.
One of my all-time favourite records just got better, after listening to this. Richard's writing, playing and singing is superb but The true jewel in the crown is Linda's singing. She inhabits a lyric, is pitch perfect and has a variety of tones that can move me to tears every time. A stone cold masterpiece that everyone should know.
I'm 59 and I still live by the ethos of this song. Have always wondered more about it and I appreciate the story telling insight.
One thing i learned about writing lyrics is to write it all down, good or bad and keep it around to sort of grow with as you grow. Maybe the way you write lyrics for something isn't very good, but the inspiration is important and can be reworded later. I write lyrics a lot kind of as a way to jot things down about the way i feel about something or someone or an incident that made an impression on me in such a way that it inspired me to write about it. I look at everything as knowledge and learning, and since i have a very analytical mind i'm always thinking about stuff and turning it over in my brain. I was in a band at one point and had all these lyrics in kind of a folder and i told the the singer of the band that if he ever couldn't think of anything to write to check out the folder for lyrics or ideas for inspiration and i put it in a drawer at our practice spot. We had some new music we are working on and he started going through the folder and ended up taking 3 different parts from three different ideas i had written down and made it into one song that in my opinion was better than those three things on their own. Sometimes i also think its good to get the terrible crap out of your brain to get to the good stuff, and get better at writing as you go.
The guitar sounds beautiful, almost clean, highs rolled of. I miss that sound.
I recall listening to Palace(music, brothers or songs) with friends while sitting around the kitchen table, so we gave it the title "cafe punk". Coffee, cigarettes & Palace tunes, all night.
Love this song. The live cut from guitar/vocal started my hunt for Richard (and Linda’s) live material.
🤘
This dialogue needs more cowbell or something...
10:37 I took that photo of the band.
I am 50 now and still get a sense of righteousness when this song perkolates to the top of my mind. Thank you for the view behind the mind and creation of this song
Was lucky enough to see R & L Thomson supporting Kinks at UKC Sports Hall in early 1970’s and they were very good indeed
Dig that he played My Pal live.
Every time I'm walking from one room into another and I fart and I can smell it in the next room this song comes to mind.
Nice. Funny thing about the guys in The Band, is how they look like a bunch of old tramps…
wow, Lucky Lehrer moved to guitar in The Circle Jerks? Must not have been for a very long time at all.
Thank you for posting. One of my favourite songs and favourite recordings. Always lifts my spirits. Interesting comment about Linda's vocal being like Connie Francis. This is one of Linda's best and has a "dirty" sound to it.
Still gives me chills- particularly the live version. Marvellous stuff
Still sounds fresh 50 years after the recording
Indeed.
"There's nothing to grow up for any more."? Wow, dark stuff, but a great song.
I've made up for myself a legend for the subject of this song. The little horror has reed hair and develops a love of motor bikes.
Richard Thompson most under appreciated guitar genius in Western music!
Not under appreciated, just not as well known as he might be!
Was this song in the movie Looper where Joe is seeing the character Suzie? It just sounds so familiar to me.
I wish there was one of these for every one of Richard's songs.
Used to love playing this album!!! Great to hear the background as to how it was made! Lovely arrangements, vocals, lyrics. Songs that transcend their time! Thanks for the share!
This is a goldmine!! ❤
One of the finest songs ever written!
Lovely guy who l had the pleasure of meeting , a really gifted songwriter, "who knows where the time goes" and meet on the ledge, are 2 of the most beautiful poignant songs you will ever hear ❤
“Who Knows Where the Time Goes” was written by Sandy Denny. I do agree that Richard is a gifted songwriter and an incredible guitarist. Jealous that you got to meet him.
Thanks for this. This is the song that really turned me on to Richard. He is still one of my musical heros.
the genre i’d say the melvins are is the melvins :)
Love the video with Tom bouncing to this rocker and singing it with so much feeling. My favorite song right now
