He was expected to win.... everybody knew it. The coaches, the fans, the judges.... *sighs deeply* With his vita... youngest All Around Champion with only 16 years of age in 1983 Then the boycott of the Olympics in 1984 - he was in his prime and would have won the Gold Medal without a doubt The terrible accident in 1985 He fought to come back in 1987 and became again the reigning All Around Champion.... It was such a pity, that he made this mistake in the Team Final in Seoul. Tragic....
Indeed. I guess he was shocked. He probably knew, that the USSR would find a way to let him start in the All Around, even if another gymnast from his own team would have been in front of him. There was a three gymnast per country rule (to the max) for the All Around Competition. The problem was, that he had to take over the prelim score. They added the points from the Compulsory and the Team Final and divided it by 2 in the past. This score was taken over to the final and was added again with the scores from the All Around. If the only All Around would have been taken to account, Dimitri would have been the Olympic Champion, since he had the best performance this day. This new rule, where all pre-scores were dropped in the Finals, was introduced a year later. Those scores were only important to qualify for the Finals, but then every gymnast started again from a zero.
Best from the best
Este día fue muy duro para mí. Lo recordaré siempre.

Can’t imagine what must have been going through his mind when the error happened 😞
