      Dr. Joy DeGruy Leary explains it beautifully....She shows a picture of the lynching of a Black man with a young White girl standing by the body with, what seems to be, her father. The child had a smirk on her face as if the hanging, dead body, had no effect on her. But if you would have brought out a puppy and stomped its head, the child would possibly need therapy. Dr. Leary pointed it as one of the ways White America dehumanized their own children by dehumanizing Black people through lynchings....A Black life is worth less than a dogs.

    I love how Ava is honest and factual. She didn’t shade the jogger but reflected on how the the jogger was selective on who she would speak to. The jogger not even speaking to Ava actually speaks volume of how the jogger wants to stay “pure” in her lily white bubble.

    • @atlantabrooklyngal
      @atlantabrooklyngal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +85

      Right! What I don't understand is, if in the jogger's mind these boys were guilty, Matias Reyes, the real rapist, went on to continue to rape more women after the kids were arrested. If the cops did their jobs correctly more women would not have been raped and a woman and her unborn baby would not be dead. Reyes was considered a loner, he would not have raped anyone with these kids. Why, hasn't she looked into all of the facts herself, wouldn't she want justice? She should have been suing the city right alongside the young men who were wronged. There are always too many White people (not all) who are always on the wrong side of history when things should be more clear to them.

    • @promissemariysi7073
      @promissemariysi7073 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    • @atlantabrooklyngal
      @atlantabrooklyngal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      @@promissemariysi7073 but were they really on her side if they coerced and beat these boys into confessions to quickly close this case? There was no DNA found on the boys at all, but Reyes was a complete match! There were two rapes that we know of before her and five that took place after her. They finally caught Reyes in August 1989. Her rape happened in April of 1989. The prosecutor and detectives never took a step back and said we are still finding women who are being bound and beat in the same manner as the jogger something is wrong. If she looked at Korey's confession he changes some of the events several times. I will not bash her, but if they were really on her side they would have worked to get the right killer and not sweep this under the rug, cause it's easier to pin this on under age Black kids. Everyone goes on with their lives to much success and her life plus the kids are destroyed. She is a motivational speaker now. What exactly is she speaking on if she is not interested in the full truth?

    • @lilmonstahh23
      @lilmonstahh23 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@atlantabrooklyngal I don't think you realize it's not about sides and helping the jogger. The jogger is one incident and I agree, they could have done a better job with this whole investigation. However, the police unfortunately do not work like law and order or strategically like Criminal minds. I wish they did. Unfortunately they work on a case by case basis. Unless events clearly link up (which what you mentions obviously does but they had their head in their ass) they cannot make that judgement call and probably won't. Especially if such and such person like that investigator has too much ego and is unwilling to change their focus. We need to protect ourselves from the police and know what we should and shouldn't do or say around them. That is more than evident since I watched this. I know my rights and I will definitely teach my children to be aware if I have my own.

    The horror story of the Central Park 5 was another version of the Scottsboro Boys. They took place decades apart but the sentiment of white America hadn't changed. It hasn't changed.
    #AvaDuVernay is doing very important and necessary work. I can't say how joyful it is to know these young men survived, were exonerated, and reunited with their loved ones. Their story is so special because there are thousands gone who did not survive, were never exonerated, and never saw their loved ones again. #WhenTheySeeUs

    I was picked up at 3am in my home! Taken to Carrol County, Georgia. They accused me of writing checks for more than $3,000! I had lost my wallet three months prior, and didn’t realize it had actually been stolen.
    I sat in jail for three months because I couldn’t afford bail!!! I was so afraid because they offered me 10 years! I had not had any legal support until a week before going in front of the judge!
    My family called the DA, Investigator, and court, with no response!
    Finally I go to court, and the judge looks at the case, and could not believe they held me for the This with all the evidence that showed it was not me!
    They just released me, no apology, nothing!
    My car was repossessed, I lost my job, and am still traumatized! They came into my home guns drawn!

      100% agree, I was thinking the same, the same negative energy they had, the same way they made life hell for these 5 men, and changed their lives forever, they should now apologise, hold their hands up and ask for forgiveness from these men. It’s disgusting how they can do all this and get away with it, Idc about the money the men have received as compensation, you can’t put a price on mental health, or give them back their childhood, or their innocence that they once had - even if their names have been cleared, there’s still idiots out there who will carry a negative opinion of these men still

    Meanwhile, I am trying to prepare my psyche to watch this movie. I'm so emotionally spent from the mass shootings, the babies being killed by people who are supposed to care for them and the police just out here acting crazy I'm not sure how much more I can handle. This world is a mess!

    I watched the interview with my youngest son who's a student at the US Naval Academy and he was absolutely devastated. He watched the series without my since he's home on vacation and said to me when I returned home from work that he wept watching it. I grew up in Brooklyn and left NYC for the Military in 1983 and was not aware of this event. But for God that could've been my story. I had a couple of friends who did time at Riker's so I know the impact of imprisonment 2nd hand. Thanks for telling their story for it has opened many eyes.

      @@wegotthis973 if you're waiting for those black men that are celebrities or athletes or musicians that are well off and very Influential, then it's gonna be a wait.. very long wait, us blue collar black men, we always support our black women. My family's men and my friends we always support our women. We go over looked because we're normal regular, no flash no front no sensationalism. Just plain and true. Some of Our women tend to seek praise adulation approval and support from those black men that they judge are better than us regular guys. So it may feel like you're getting no support, maybe if you shift focus a bit, you'll see you have more than enough of the support you will ever need.
