  • A gunslinger and the MFIC for the Air Coryell Chargers. Broke the NFL record for passing yards two seasons in a row and produced fireworks every Sunday. Never won a Super Bowl, but easily made the Hall of Fame as a 6x Pro Bowler and 2x First Team All Pro.

    I am from Oregon and remember Dan Foust as a kid. When I joined the Navy in 75 and was stationed in San Diego, for bootcamp and was placed in the drum and bugle corp. We marched during the halftime show against the Giants that year. One of the highlights of my youth!!

    Great compilation! For 12+ minutes, it took me back to my childhood. As a San Diego guy, Dan Fouts will always be my quarterback. And watching this video, we can also appreciate the fact that Don Coryell is FINALLY in the Hall Of Fame!

    Maybe the most under appreciated QB in NFL history. Fouts would have dominated NFL today. So would Kellen Winslow.

    Dan Fouts was the most under appreciated quarterback of his time. He played the entire 15-year career with the San Diego Chargers. He was the greatest quarterback to never reach the Super Bowl. He played along with Kellen Winslow Sr. during his time with the team.

    There’s nothing underappreciated about Fouts. Maybe by people born after 1980, but for those of us who saw him, we know what’s up. Once Don Coryell came to town, Fouts was the league’s PREMIERE PASSER until the rise of Marino. He was well decorated and respected. Like a few other greats , he never guided his team to a Super Bowl victory, but that doesn’t diminish him in my eyes. When I first started watching the NFL in the 2nd grade, Fouts was the first QB I latched onto. He was the template for how a QB should walk, talk, and play: fearless, tough, and knowing that HE was the most important man on the field.

    • @dukewilson14
      @dukewilson14  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fouts broke the single season record for passing yards in 1979, then did it again in 1980, and did once more in 1981. Insane. Must have been the beard.

I know he's in already, but we played him enough times, when I was with the Raiders. But I never had the feeling that, OK, we're paying the Chargers now -- the one guy we have to worry about is the one throwing the ball."

    People who love the NFL today don't realize that before Fouts, it was 3 yards and a cloud of dust and NO one threw for 300 yards a game or 4000 yards a season. Fouts made it common place. The NFL found it exciting, filled stadiums, so changed rules to make it much more common (protecting QBs and WRs, DFBs not allowed to look at a WR the wrong way, etc.) - Basically, if not for "Air Coryell" we'd still be suffering through 9-3 games, like the Dolphins went undefeated, the QB in the Superbowl had what? 2 Completions?

    3:03 OBJ Who? #83 John Jefferson made those one handed catches just about weekly and work no tacky gloves either. I forget which record it was - most TDs or Yards in a season that Jerry Rice owns, but they forget the Charger WR (Wes Chandler held that record and did it in a strike shortened season, so Jerry Rice had about 2x more games to get it and then just barely got it.

    Fouts obviously was a tremendous quarterback and a deserving hall of famer. But often times he's put in the same category as guys like Dan Marino and Peyton manning and John Elway etc and I just don't agree with that . He had barely a career winning record and I understand that you don't have to win multiple super bowls to be great . His completion pct is good but he threw a lot of interceptions and I know he had to carry the chargers a lot because their defense was lousy . But overall Dan Fouts was a great quarterback

    • @punkadiddle
      @punkadiddle 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are guys in the Hall Of Fame like Joe Namath, who had way more interceptions than touchdowns passes, and Terry Bradshaw, who also threw a lot of INTs and barely completed 51% of his passes. So those guys didn't have great numbers, but they won a lot of games. That's why they're in as well. Fouts had way better numbers than those two, even though he never got to a Super Bowl. But from 1979-1982, Fouts won more games than any other QB, and it's not even close.

    • @lendrury2771
      @lendrury2771 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@punkadiddle well said. In the case of Namath however I personally believe that he's in the hall of fame largely based on superbowl 3 and it being a seminal game that proved that the afl was just as good as the NFL. Because overall Namath was mediocre.

    Back in the day when a QB didn't throw 3 yard dump off passes or 4 yard cross patterns and are labeled a hero. Yeah, I'm talking about Aaron Rodgers, Brady, Brees. These guys week after week threw a 4 yard pass and the receiver made 9 guys miss and the QB gets all the credit for being savvy with his ball placement. Hilarious.
