    This is the episode where you realise the revival is going to work. The Daleks are one of The Doctors first BIG enemies and their first appearance caused the shift from educational time travel show to adventure and aliens. The Dalek's themselves are NAZI's, something not lost on a 1960's audience. However, they were put together on a shoestring budget hence the toilet plunger and egg wisk weapons. Oh, a pepper pot is a pepper shaker. Still, it's a credit to this episode that they made this stupid looking thing utterly terrifying. Christopher E is at his best in this one too.

    Being a fans for nearly 42 years now, I've seen comics and read jokes about the "mutant" anatomy of the Dalek creature being comparable to sea life. But yours is the first reaction video in which somebody suggested EATING the organic component! Now I have this mental image of Daleks racing away in abject terror from humans chasing them wearing lobster bibs and brandishing utensils, seafood sauces and drawn butter! 🤣

    OMG, the Red Lobster references have me thinking back to the Boondocks with Riley screaming: "Not the Cheddar Biscuits grandad! Not the Cheddar Biscuits!"
    I love that you went in so blind you didn't know it was a battle armor and driver situation. Daleks were introduced in 1963 to the show as part of the second multi-part story, and they were so popular they came back over and over and over again.

    Re: The Borg comparisons - they are much more like another Doctor Who villain (originating in 1966) - the Cybermen - a race that assimilates other organisms, replacing their body parts with machinery and extinguishing emotions.
    Daleks are the mutant survivors of a once-humanoid race with a xenophobic hatred of all other life forms. The outer-shell that looks like a murderbot is effectively a tank that the mutated remnant is locked inside. They appeared in the second ever Doctor Who storyline back in 1963 and were the first aliens in the show (if you don't count the Doctor and his granddaughter)

    • @tnx301

    The assistant who gets rid of the ludicrous billionaire at the end is Anna Louise Plowman. She is married to Toby Stephens, who is playing Poseidon in Percy Jackson. They both are in Black Sails, along with Toby's brother, Chris Larkin. The boys are Dame Maggie Smith's children.

  • @CrankyGrandma
    @CrankyGrandma 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

    Doctor Who’s version of the borg are something else. It predated Star Trek. This is one of the first tv sci fi shows. The Dalek is an enemy from way back in 1963. They had no fx budget so they cobbled together something with an egg whisk and plunger and still made it formidable. The basic design is unchanged from 1963. You can see this version of the Doctor is kinda post war PSTD. Lots of good stuff in this one.
    I always recommend one particular classic who episode that impacts quite a few nuWho episodes. It’s called “genesis of the Daleks”. It’s got old tv slow pacing but I’d recommend at least watching clips or reading a recap - with pictures- before next season. It’s pretty key to understanding stuff as you go on.

      Yep, the Doctor Who version of (inspiration for?) the Borg was shown in the head in the display early on.
      As for watching Genesis, all of NuWho so far has been written without needing a knowledge of classic - even much later on when referenced directly, full knowledge is not necessary. I would recommend only if they are sure they won't watch classic.

    The daleks featured in the 2nd ever story of the show in 1963 and in fact saved the show as they boosted the ratings enormously and ushered in a period in the 60s called "dalekmania" in which they were everywhere , toys, comic books, cereal packets, even 2 x movies made for the cinema...!!

    Pepper Pot = a pot filled with pepper.
    The word "Dalek" has entered major dictionaries, including the Oxford English Dictionary, which defines "Dalek" as "a type of robot appearing in 'Dr. Who'.
    After their first appearance in 1963 school children ran around calling out "exterminate".

    The thing The Doctor and Rose were looking at right at the start of the episode (that The Doctor called 'stone dead') was the head of something called a Cyberman, another very famous enemy of The Doctor. They've had multiple looks over the years. They're actually more like The Borg than Daleks are (or I suppose more accurately, The Borg are like Cybermen as Cybermen predate The Borg by, over 20 years).

  • @GhostPurple69
    @GhostPurple69 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    just to be clear, the daleks are from 1963-the show's second-ever serial, and the one that made it a phenomenon back in the day.
    for context, that's three years before star trek's first episode, fourteen before star wars. and they haven't really changed in all that time.
    they were meant as a direct 1:1 nazi allegory-and mind, wwii was more recent history then than 9/11 is now. their weird shape is a result of aiming at "how'd they do that" inhuman alien design, where they weren't just obviously extras with a rubber mask or bumps on their faces-while also having basically zero budget available. that their design wound up so interesting and memorable as to have stayed basically the same for 60 years is a testament to the raw make-do lateral-thinking talent in the bbc's design and effects departments.
    btw, "salt and pepper pots" are the british term for what we call salt & pepper shakers. it's because in the old days in europe when salt was actually worth something, it tended to be displayed in an open pot in the center of the table as sort of a status symbol, to show off how wealthy your host wanted people to think he was. even back to 100 years ago you can still find some real fancy-ass salt pots made of gold or silver or marble, like these sculptures inlaid with gemstones. so, even though everyone just uses individual shakers these days and salt and pepper are basically worthless beyond their flavor value, in the uk the original term has just stuck around linguistically, to apply to what people have in front of them.
    so, tl;dr, just substitute "salt shaker" and you get the insult 😆
    (edited to add, this is also where we get iron man's girlfriend. british people like the alliteration of "pepper pot," how mildly silly it sounds rolling off the tongue, so when making reference, that expression is more of a thing than "salt pot," which isn't as much fun to say. 🧐)

    Thanks for this reaction. I LOVE Chris Eccleston a.the Doc in this. He showed such range in his short time on the show, but this episode was a great shift from an affable guy to a ruthless one who is dealing with trauma. 9 is my favorite doc of the new era. Ncuti is a promising rival, but that all depends on if the writing quality is good.

    Loved Enemy mine as a kid. Fun Fact is that they added the mine scenes to the movie because the producers thought people would get confused that there wasn't a mine because of the title. Anyways another great reaction and breakdown after. Born in 1980 and have been a fan of doctor who since i was a kid, as parents were a little strict and only let me watch pbs. Hope y'all continue to enjoy the ride that this show delivers. Ep's 9 and 10 are my faves of this season.

    The Daleks were the first alien enemy in Doctor Who, and were an allegory for the Nazis.
    A pepper pot is a pepper shaker, and it was chosen as a basic shape because the writer and producers didn’t want any identifiable human features.

    These reactions are going from strength to strength. Loving that you're getting into the series.
    The first half of this season is carefully structured, even though they are "monster of the week" stories (or two-weeks if it's a two-parter). The opener sets up the Doctor and Rose; then they go to the future, the past and then look at the consequences of Rose travelling with the Doctor when she comes home as well as giving us a classic alien invasion story. I feel like the series is demonstrating the different types of stories it can tell. It also drip feeds the exposition that The Doctor is the last of his kind, that there was a war and now we finally find out that the enemy the Time Lords was the Daleks and how powerful even one can be.

    Daleks go back with Doctor Who like oil and vinegar, leather and lace, salt and pepper no pun intended.
    In the classic run of Doctor Who, the 4th Doctor time traveled to their home planet of Skaro right before the first Dalek was created. He actually had a chance to prevent them from coming into being. But the Doctor choose not to commit an act of genocide because that wasn't his style. However, as he made that decision he knew that billions of people would die regretting his inaction.
    The Daleks pretty much come out and cause trouble for every incarnation of the Doctor. But he and his companions usually finds different elaborate methods to outsmart them.
    However, sometimes brute force works well too. The 7th incarnation of the Doctor had a young female companion nicknamed Ace. Ace was the only companion that the Doctor thought so highly of he was mentoring to potentially become a Time Lord like him. However, the show was cancelled in 1989 before that storyline could be shown.
    Ace was a bit of a cockney tomboy, always wearing a black bomber jacker and carrying a baseball bat in a rucksack with her as a melee weapon. The Doctor used an alien artifact called The Hand of Omega to enhance the durability of the bat to make it almost indestructible. There is a hilarious sequence in one classic episode (available on YT) in which Ace uses her bat to beat the living crap out of a bunch of Daleks.

    "Dalek" takes a playful swipe at a lot of the common jokes about daleks: they look like pepper pots (pepper shakers), they look like dustbins (trash cans), they can't climb stairs, they have an apparently useless plunger arm.
    The design is from the second ever Doctor Who story in 1963 and I think they're a really clever design because they don't look like 'people in rubber suits' (so they've aged a little better than other designs such as The Gorn from 60s Star Trek and many examples from Doctor Who itself). But the design is part of the storytelling: they have locked themselves away in little tanks, you can't see what is inside but know it is a mutated creature not a robot, their voices sound shrill and ridiculous at first (mechanical but also like the amplified voices of a demagogue at a fascist rally) but then become unnerving because they are so persistant.
    The designer said that when it came to the 2005 series, they didn't want to redesign totally, just upgrade it. He said he wanted it to be like the mini cooper: you can tell the 1960s version is the same car as the 2000s version.

    • @Syntell
      @Syntell  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The mini cooper is a great comparison.

    • @barriehull7076
      @barriehull7076 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mini (stylised as MINI)[1] is a British automotive brand founded in 1969, owned by German automotive company BMW since 2000, and used by them for a range of small cars assembled in the United Kingdom, Austria and the Netherlands. The word Mini has been used in car model names since 1959, and in 1969 it became a brand in its own right when the name "Mini" replaced the separate "Austin Mini" and "Morris Mini" car model names. Why is the Mini Cooper named that?
      Mini (marque) - Wikipedia
      The names Cooper and Cooper S followed the names used for the sportier version of the classic Mini, which in turn come from the involvement of John Cooper and the Cooper Car Company. The Cooper heritage was further emphasised with the John Cooper Works (JCW) range of tuning options that are available with the Mini.

    The Daleks are what made the show back in the 60's. They were introduced in the second story line (and were based on Nazis). From what I have heard, the people who were working on the show were on the subway and heard kids talking about Daleks right after the show aired. It was then they knew it was going to be a popular show.

    Ahh this is a great reaction!! The Daleks are the most infamous villains of Who, most people who haven't seen the show would prob still recognize the Daleks. The little showcase of aliens in this episode were also hints at other classic who villains that you'll see eventually as well! Super excited after this point its pretty uphill from here with Doctor Who.

    Welcome to the Daleks or a Dalek the Doctor's oldest foes which have been around since the very beginning in 1963 "Exterminate!" is their catchphrase.
    One things for sure never have sympathy for a Dalek they would exterminate on the spot and yes they are space racists anything that's un-Dalek they kill they were born and created to hate which was what the Doctor meant by bread as someone already pointed out they were based on Nazi Germany.
    The Doctor was never this dark until this point of the episode this is the first time ever in the show that we ever see the Doctor this angry which wasn't originally meant to intended to happen according to the original draft it was meant to be a toned down discussion with the Dalek but Christopher Eccleston performed it so well that they kept it in the episode but behind-the-scenes Eccleston took his anger and frustration to the Dalek while at the time he was going through a personal bad time in his life when his father was suffering from alzieimers disease but managed to stay in character.
    The Daleks are often mistaken for robots but no they are squids in a mechanical tank.

    This episode reveals a good bit of why this version of The Doctor is the way he is. He's a soldier fresh off the time war. He's got ptsd from being a part of a war that caused the genocide of multiple species. Not only that, but "I made it happen". We don't get full details here, he does tell you he caused it to happen. Y'all keep saying he's kind of an ass, but the dude has ptsd and survivors guilt to an extreme degree. It'd be far stranger if he was 100% happy-go-lucky after all that

Off into the stars. Only out in the universe they started a war with his people, and all of his people were killed. As many have pointed out, the Daleks are (put simply) basically alien Nazis, and intended as such. The Daleks first appearance was around 18 years after the end of WWII, and around 22 years since the end of The Blitz. So people alive back then would have made the connection. Shoestring budget at the time and practical effects for a 60s sci-fi baddie (some classic baddies age better or worse), with very scary core ideas that are all too real and recognizable unfortunately.
    Rose, like any new viewer, has no idea about what a Dalek is. Some alien is being tortured, and she is upset by it, quite rightly. While the Doctor, like longtime fans, knows all about Daleks and all that entails. And the Doctor acts as expected with that information and experience. Scared, angry, and wanting to stop things before more are dead. While Rose is young, and much more naïve and hopeful, willing to see the good in others when there may not be any (or in confused short supply), and willing to believe that this Dalek could change into something better. But this Dalek would rather die than feel it had been contaminated by humanity, emotions, or maybe even mutate more due to the absorbed DNA of what it sees as an inferior species that should be exterminated. Saying near the end of the episode, "This is not life. This is sickness." and commanding her to give it the order to die. Which is all kinds of messed up.

    Full discolsure: I came across this series of reactions and started watching with the Christmas episode, but I was waiting for you to get to this episode in particular. I was keen to see how you reacted to it because the Daleks are so significant to Doctor Who lore. In a way, I was heaping too much significance on your reaction to this most iconic of villains, and it was impossible for me to be anything but disappointed in how you reacted to it. That was my bad. Resolving from now on to try to have less expectations. I am enjoying your discovery of my favorite tv series, even if you weren't sufficiently taken by the Dalek for my tastes. I'm just being a jerk here and not giving you time to grow into the lore. Keep it going!
    Footnote: If you're considering diving into the original series eventually, be warned that it's much slower and much lower quality in terms of effects and production values. Seeing all the old stories would give you that context for understanding the Daleks, but without the nostalgia carrying you in it's a tough watch.
