The primary gear (6:55) in the middle is probably the one used for drive purposes and all three gears are most likely used with a transmission - which would have been above the axle and you can see is now removed. Last I read (a few years ago) Panama was dredging where needed to widen the waterway and running into the same problems as previous - movement and inflow of dirt from the edges being excavated.
