I’ve had a CL200 for a while now but couldn’t find a fitting or unions for it that I liked. Thank you for sharing the part number, I just ordered a set from Amazon!! Great video!
I have a 24 round that holds about 14,500 gallons and use this exact chlorinator. I keep the dial set at 5 and put 5 tabs in every Friday morning all summer long. My pool is always clear and usually tests good every week with no issues. Keep in mind I run my 1 1/2 horse pump through a sand filter everyday from 7am until 7pm
Glad it works for you. I hope you’re using Cal Hypo tabs because Trichlor is evil. Each Trichlor tab adds around 2 PPM of stabilizer (CYA) in your pool. You only need 20-30 PPM for the season.
Start here… www.troublefreepool.com/blog/2019/01/18/how-to-chlorinate-your-pool/ The more you read on that site, the more you’ll understand why I say Trichlor is evil. Every tab increases CYA in your pool, which makes your chlorine less effective… so you need to add more chlorine to provide effective sanitization. More Trichlor adds more CYA so you need even more Trichlor. It’s like getting you pool hooked on crack, where every hit increases dependence but reduces the effect.
Pipe cleaner is NOT primer. It does slightly break the surface to allow it to be thoroughly cleaned, but isn't an actual primer. Primer chemically reacts with the PVC.. there is an actual reaction that softens the plastic and begins off-gassing. There is then is a specific chemical reaction between primer and cement that must occur for a proper join.. that doesn't happen if you only use cleaner. If you want confirmation, dab a tiny amount of cleaner on your finger.. then dab a tiny amount of primer on a different finger... the primer will start to BURN after 15-30 seconds or so.. because it has different chemicals in it that are actively attacking your skin. Use primer if you want a proper PVC fitting. If you are worried about the visual, Oatey makes clear primer.. beige label just like the clear cement. If you want to cut corners and save time or money by eliminating one of the 3 steps, then eliminate the cleaner. Primer can do what cleaner does almost as well (although the contaminants it takes off of the surface then end up IN the weld, which is the point of a separate cleaner product).. but cleaner CANNOT do what primer does. A more in-depth description is... a proper PVC joint is NOT a glue joint. It is a plastic weld. The cleaner eliminates grime and scours gloss off of the surface. The primer penetrates the plastic, softening it on both sides of the joint, prepping the surfaces to chemically bond together. The cement bonds with the reaction on both sides of the joint, fusing the plastic together.. not just gluing it together, but fusing it like a weld fuses two pieces of metal.
I'm willing to tackle it. I'm changing my pool from a salt system to chlorine. Any idea on how I pick the proper chlorinator? My pool is 36k 18x36. Thanks in advance!
This chlorinator will be fine for your size pool. But I have to ask. Most people want to go the other direction (chlorine TO salt). Why are you going back??
@@handydadtv We are on our 2nd salt system in 15yrs. We've replaced 2 salt cells and a micro board, between the two. I believe the cell is not producing to enough chlorine and the system reading lights are acting up. Was told I might need to just replace my system. It's a 2014. I'm just not going to buy another complete system again. I thought this might be a cost effective way to fix my issues. Thoughts?
@jimmy7376 I’ve never done a salt system so I really can’t comment. The only advice I will give is beware of chlorine tablets because each tablet raises your CYA level. Watch th-cam.com/video/wwOTA9LA8vU/w-d-xo.html
Just remember that adding more pucks will increase the chlorine (and CYANURIC acid) that flows into the pool at any given setting on the chlorinator as more pucks will be dissolving at the same time. I put about four 3” pucks a week into mine for my 21000 gallon pool. I’d like to install one of those chlorine genies in order to use saltwater to add chlorine without having to have the whole pool be saltwater but they are crazy expensive.
Yes we’ve gotten very good at keeping our levels consistent. We use tablets until the CYA level gets where it needs to be, then we switch to liquid for the rest of the summer.
How’s your water return pressure after adding? Curious if it slows down water pressure after adding a chlorinator. I don’t currently have one but have floaters in the pool. Want to add one.
Awesome video. Makes me feel more comfortable about replacing my aging Pool Frog system. I was looking at the Pentair Rainbow 320. What do you like about thr Hayward?
@@handydadtv basically it's a inline mineral cartridge that sanitizes the water with copper and silver. In the center of the mineral cartridge is a clorine reservoir cartridge. There is a dial to select how much clorine you want in the pool. With this system you can leave your clorine level at 0.5 ppm. The clorine is basically just used as a safety net. I really like the system alot and with the minerals you get a soft water effect and keeps the ph in check.
It’s a necessary evil. The chlorinator is great when you’re going to be away. But stabilized chlorine raises CYA and makes chlorine less effective, so you need to use more, which raises CYA more, etc. So it’s like getting your pool hooked on crack.
Why are there threads on the inside of the connection on the chlorinator (brown) and outside of the black connector(s)? I know why there are threads on the outside of the brown but why inside? Thanks
@@handydadtv ok. Makes sense. I’m installing mine this weekend. Great video btw. Do you happen to know if it will affect anything if I reduce my 2” plumbing to 1.5” to accommodate the chlorinator?
@@handydadtv Your you can do whatever you choose to do with your pool, but that stuff isn't pressure rated like schedule 40 or 80 PVC and will start to split over time, I've personally seen it happen. Theres a reason the stuff you used is on the opposite side of the isle. It's made for drains.
Well, this product is so expensive and only lasted me for 2 summers. That's 4 months of use. For $170 big ones!?!? No thanx. I'll buy those cheap $50 ones. And Hayward customer service was a joke.

If you tighten the glue top and then store it upside down it seems to store for longer. Atleast it does for me so I figured I'd share the tip
Doesn’t the brush dry out if it’s sticking above the glue level?
You the best . Thank you
Thanks 😊
Does this Chlorine Feeder only work with liquid chlorine or is there an Automatic Chlorine Feeder that would work with granules?
Neither. It only works with tablets.

I’ll need to investigate that.
Hi there, great video! But with this chlorinator, have you solved the chlorine problem? Thanks!
No impact. Only a very small amount of water goes through the chlorine chamber. Most goes straight through.
Thank you for the video, I need to install a CL200 as my Frogger is done. What fittings did you use from the chlorinator to the PVC?
There’s a link to the unions in the video description.
I wanted to see how the clorine pucks get added. does water fly out or is it easy? can the pump be on when adding pucks?
Water doesn’t fly out, but it will overflow if open when the pump is on. Always turn it off to reload.
Awesome video. Makes me feel more comfortable about replacing my aging Pool Frog system. I was looking at the Pentair Rainbow 320. What do you like about thr Hayward?
Easy to get parts.
We can't use clear cleaner on new builds. Inspections require the purple primer. Just a heads up. Check your local code!!
Good to know!
This looks a lot more reliable than the annoying rainbow 320 I currently have. One more season I think and i'll replace it.
I never used anything other than Hayward.
Did you also install a check valve?
I just installed the kit. Not sure if it has a check valve built in.
Do you install this before or after the pool heater
After. The chlorinator should be directly before the lines return to the pool.
Great idea, i like my floating frog. LoL
🐸🐸🐸
No Teflon thread tape and/or thread sealant on the unions?
I used Teflon
It has O rings. Teflon and or sealant is not necessary
Can you explain what the FROG that was for when it was working?
Some kind of mineral treatment to prevent algae and use less chlorine.
I currently use a frog mineral system they are awsome!
@matt - Tell me more about your configuration and how you use it. What sanitizer do you use (ie. do you also have a chlorinator)?

Stabilized chlorine is evil.

I guess for different piping options.

That’s a good question for your pool store. I think you’ll be fine with a variable speed pump, but not sure about a single speed pump.
@@handydadtv I bought the unit brand new from someone on Facebook for $50. My pool store has been helpful. Thanks again
What about the Aqua Genie skimmer that has a chlorine container for tablets?
I’ve read that a high concentration of chlorine builds up in the skimmer when the pump is off. And that isn’t good for the skimmer.
Can I use bromine in my chlorine feeder?
Google that
Today I wet swimming but the pool had hidden systems!!!!
Was that a problem?
I ordered the same model adapters but one won’t screw and it says only 2 PVC and the other says Only 1 PVC
Sounds like a manufacturing issue. Return them and buy a new set.
no primer?
In my experience, primer and cleaner do the same thing. No issues with any of the glue joints.
