One of the greatest and most romantic scenes in the entire series. And definitely the most satisfying. I’m impressed Mrs. Hughes didn’t spill or drop the two cups in her hands! LOL.
I adore this scene! Was there ever a more romantic proposal? Or more adorable an acceptance? "Of course I'll marry you, you old booby!" I love it!

@@12classics39 And he's been in love with her at least since her cancer scare. Remember how he was singing to himself after finding out she was going to be ok? Why did he take so long with the proposal? They weren't getting any younger!
@@alondralabute2310 oh yeah they definitely have loved each other since episode 1. When he sings to himself after learning she’s not sick, it’s one of the highlights of the whole show! And I agree it was definitely a SLOW burn. Jim Carter himself said they got together “at the speed of Galapagos tortoises!” LOL!
I think we all can agree that they are Downton's cutest couple
What's missing is when Mr. Carson presents Mrs. Hughes with the idea of buying a house together. She turns him down because she cannot afford the investment, due to the fact that she's paying for the care of her invalid sister. Mr. Carson goes ahead and buys the property and signs both of their names on the lease. This giving him the courage to ask for her hand in marriage. It may have taken them 5 seasons to get here, but I'm overjoyed and elated that they Finally came together.

I thought from the very first episode that Mrs. Hughes was in love with Carson, and I think the show handled their relationship so beautifully. It was subtle, and yet it was so clear how much they meant to each other, right up to this beautiful scene. The first time I saw this, it completely made my day.

I need a Mr Carson and Mrs Hughes compilation with Carson celebrating that Mrs Hughes doesn't have cancer, the Beach scene, the proposal, Carson and Mrs Patmore talking about Mrs. Hughes wedding concerns and, finally, the wedding (maybe even adding their domestic life after that)
Their married life was the least sweet of all their moments . I wanted her to throttle him

So sweet. I didn't watch Downton until I believe the end of the 4th year. It was towards the end of the of the episode where they take a day at the beach. When Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes had their little exchange as the walked into the water, I said I have to watch this. I had tears in my eyes that an older couple got a tender scene like that. Just beautiful.

I’m 6”2, and over 300 pounds, and this scene had me in tears. I wept like a baby out of pure joy; this scene was rather moving and done perfectly.
The season before while they were holding hands at the beach was touching; and I hoped they get together, but couldn’t see how.
Glad I was thrown off as it made this scene extra special.
Gods, those sad eyes of Mr. Carson at the end only say that they have wasted so much time. And their feelings were mutual all this time.
I must be one of the few here who actually didn't like them as a couple. I think their friendship and mutual appreciation for each other was deeper than any romantic feelings between them. However I'm happy they got married because they both had mentioned at some point that they felt like they had been missing something in life by not having their own family so I guess that's good for them.

I thought it interesting that they really limit the kissing between these two during the movies. They do the same with Daisy and Andy, as well as Edith and Bertie. In fact I don't recall any of these 3 couples kissing in either movie. My speculation is that since Lara Carmichael (Edith) and Michael Fox (Andy) developed a relationship during the series, and Jim Carter's real life wife was in both movies, they showed respect to the real life relationships by not having the actors kiss someone else on set.

Do you remember that old flame of hers that popped up in series 1? Farmer. Asked her to marry him in their youth. Well, she should have married him when he asked again. At least he was cheerful and had a sense of fun.
Il est vieux, il est seul, il sait que son temps de service va se terminer, il connait la maladie de son père et il sait quil en est atteint.... il a besoin de s'assurer un foyer pour l'après... de quelquun qui s'occupera de lui.....pour elle cest un peu pareil, elle arrive au bout, elle na ni famille ni argent. Elle voit le monde bouger et son travail etre menace un jour... il lui faut un foyer et une securite pour ses virux jours.... ils se ressemblent dans leur droiture et leurs fonctions. ... ils se reconnaissent l'un dans l'autre... ils ont vu l'exemple d'autres couples de domestiques sous les yeux et ils voient que cest possible.... il y a du respect mutuel, de la co nivence dans leurs fonctions respectives qui s'accordent a merveille....peut on parler d'amour ???? C'est plus un rapprochement d'intérêts communs. Ce qui est souvent le cas ....
