Laser Labial Frenectomy on Infant

A frenectomy (also known as a frenulectomy or frenotomy) is the removal of a frenulum, a small fold of tissue that prevents an organ in the body from moving too far. This procedure is most urgent under the tongue to help a baby that cannot achieve an effective latch. A painful and ineffective latch can be made more suitable for Mom and baby with a labial frenectomy.
This is also a very common procedure that is performed on infants, children, and adults to prevent and facilitate the correction of a space between the front teeth.
Frenectomies can be safely and efficiently released with the soft tissue laser with predictable and repeatable tissue response, fast ablation and instant hemostasis. The extremely precise cutting, minimal collateral damage, clear and bloodless operating field, make the diode laser a good choice for frenectomy procedures. Laser oral surgery also features less wound contraction and reduced scarring in comparison with scalpel incisions.

The ‘gums’ can often be done without local anesthetic if it’s very minor and done very slowly.
But certainly more comfortable with a pinch of local anesthetic for the gums and certainly for a frenectomy unless it’s very fine tissue

The primary purpose of the frenectomy on an infant is to facilitate breast-feeding.
The babes often breast feed immediately after the procedure. Many moms would say ‘it was the best feeding they’ve ever had!’

@thataintu because I am sure they appear strange with the gear, lights, and noises, and then they're directing it all in his mouth.

@@nightshade1621 an effort should be made, with a patient of any age, for that matter, to keep instruments out of view. This would be done to reduce anxiety and for patient safety in case of the unlikely instrument falling
Having said that; 1. an infant doesn’t see that well to start with. 2. An infant, quite frankly, has not yet been taught to fear the unknown. The procedure is virtually painless. Keeping them nestled in their own comfy car seat, with careful manipulation of their numb lip, does not, in our experience create anxiety for the babies. Generally, anxiety is seen in older kids and from parents transferring their fears to the child- justifying our request to have parents wait in the reception area or at least out of the child’s view.

Relatively uneventful. Initial healing is a few days and pretty much unnoticeable in two weeks

@@thataintu true but it not right I will never do that I will allow them to do it when they turn 6 or 8 year old if I have a child but you never know if they gonna have pain in the future or might be risky to do

​@SkyLight724 my daughter had a grade 4 lip tie released at a month old, if you look that up it's where the frenulum notches the bone and if she had grown up with it she would have a severe gap between her front teeth. She's also had a tongue release done this week at almost 4 months because it was somehow missed previously but was so bad she was severely struggling to gain weight consistently and was in yet another weight plateau despite supplementing with A LOT of formula. So far she's slept better and has stopped having scary breathing problems, leaks less,is working on better breastfeeding, and can finally hold a pacifier in her mouth if I decide to give her one. For some babies it's not an option to wait till they're older and side note a tongue tie can cause a cascade of body/muscle problems that are often more expensive to treat.
