I gotta get one of those side scans , I guide and fish My river all the time and we have big stripes and Hybrid stripes Bass but getting on them is hard ,,, Not after I get a side scan LOL ! Thanks Brother !
Hell yeah brother I learned so much from this video. I was out with Joey last week Striper fishing and I was messing with his Simrade until and I have to say I'm so jealous lol
awesome video. ordered 2 of the striper stealth rods medium and they are great. have since ordered 2 more medium rods and 2 more extra heavy for trolling. ordered my son 2 medium rods and he loves em. question. when trolling are you using ur trolling motor or boat motor and when u hook up do you go in neutral or keep trolling keeping pressure on line.
Mike Bruns I’m using the gas motor for artificials. I will keep the motor in gear for a few seconds to see if we double up, after that I drop to neutral to fight the fish and crank the second line in. I’m glad you like the rods!! Thanks brother!
Sup Bud. I’m just curious what you think of the 28-31 slot. Would you have been OK with recreational fishing for stripers be completely C&R? What about commercial? They don’t need stripers to survive so should we shut them down completely?
I remember the Moratorium in the 80’s-90’s VERY well and I hated it, mostly because it was so bad they didn’t really NEED to set the moratorium. The dang fish were all but gone for a good while. I PERSONALLY have no problem going catch and release only, but most people don’t want to do that and I totally understand their concerns. It can be tough to convince people that the reproduction has been suffering when fishing is still so good. It’s only good because we are catching fish that hatched while the stocks were in good shape. The new slot is designed to protect one of the better reproduction classes we have had going back a few years. I don’t remember the exact year’s hatch we are protecting, but it does make sense. I DO feel that commercial baitfishing puts the biggest hurt on the Stripers. I’ve seen acres of dead Stripers floating many years back when they were by-catch in Menhaden nets. That was tough to see. Although commercial fishermen MAY be doing the most harm, All of us SPORTFISHERMEN will continue to make the sacrifices because we truly LOVE the fish the most.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Boy it has been a rough ride for the poor striped bass. I also remember the 80s, 90s. There were times the stocks were so bad you couldn’t buy a fish. I can remember a 24” size limit but I also remember when the limit was 36 inches and not only did we catch 36” fish we caught a boatload of 34, 35” shorts. I don’t know what happened but BOOM you could keep two 28” fish. I’ll tell you what Mike. I find most people who call themselves fisherman are happy to gently release a “keeper” that would have made a fine dinner. People are happy to say they let ‘‘em all go. So how long does it take for a bass to go from being a small fry to being 30”s. IDK off hand.
Hi Mike, I fish in Salem Massachusetts. We usually fish the rocks and structure. I see you are in open water? Will the side scan do well in rocky areas and rocky coastlines we have here?
Davuncular oh yeah! It’s was really designed with structure in mind. We did a few videos with Joe Marciano up there in Salem. There are 5 on my Channel from 3-4 years back. Check em out. Thanks for the comment!
The other day I went out and tried this on my lake and it worked! I was seeing fish in deep water and they wouldn’t feed so I pulled up on a long point and spot locked in 30 foot and crushed them for an hour and a half because they were up on the point chasing schools of bait looking to feed. Y’all definitely need to try this is you are struggling with the deep fish like I was and am.
Start by looking for shadows, black dots on the colored background, there are sometimes easier to see than the return depending on how high or low the fish is. What type of side scan are you using?
Gary Tingler we being that your screen is shorter set your range to auto and then you can tweak it as you change depths. You won’t mark many fish at the edges of the screen anyway, the only ones you will see that far out will have to be on the bottom. Set it so the black area in the center takes up roughly half the screen. It really helps with smaller screens.
Hi Mike, thank you so much for such an informative video! What type of chart are you using? I just bought a GO9 and am debating between C-map or Navionics. Thank you in advance for all of your help!
This is Navionics Platinum Plus. I chose it because the Evo3 does Sonar Chart Live with it. You can record your own charts, but more importantly it gives you access to charts that others have recorded. They are DEADLY Accurate with contours of one foot. The only downside is you have to update your chart card with Navionics every year for $99 which is a bit high, especially after 10-12 years of updating. I have used C-map many years ago and liked it but I haven’t seen it recently. The Go series doesn’t have sonar chart live so C-map might be something to check out.
Mike Smedley thank you sir! I really appreciate your feedback! I’ve been watching all of your videos trying to get ready for my first ever season of striper fishing on Eastern Long Island! Thank you for all that you’re doing to educate folks like me!!

We were using H here. We were trolling 40oz rigs. The MH weren’t ready yet. The MH is the most perfectly powered Striper rod I’ve ever used. They came out just perfectly!! We use them for almost everything. The Medium are great for freshwater, but I agree 100% with you, large fish will own your tail! I’ll find a link for the line counters. Thanks for the comments! Keep them coming!! 👍👍

Thanks brother!! They are definitely the Most used structure by far, easy to find. Hard to beat a good hump near deep water, but I definitely fish points the most.
How far out On side view do you set your unit I find that a 100' left and right is great seeing a lot of stuff marking a lot of stuff lot away points off structure
It depends on the depth. The faster I run when I search the less range I use. Once you start to see blackness on the left and right sides of the screen the range is set too far. When scouting at 10-15 mph I don’t set the range nearly as far as when I’m fishing.
I couldn't agree more on side Scan imaging. Are you trolling constantly at 10 miles per hour for bass or are you cruising and then dropping your troll line when you pick something up on your scree?
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS okay thanks I was thinking 10 miles per hour is way too fast for bass trolling.
