    I bought one for my first ft-450 AT and then another for my 450 D. The reports I get are consistently excellent.

    Many hams will tell you the MD 100 is one of the best sounding microphones. I run a Heil GM 5 on my FT 1000 through an EQ Plus but the MD 100 still holds its own with a very mellow easy listening rag chew sounding audio.

    Oops.. at 5:45 in, you have said something, seemingly backwards or counterintuitive, that is, if one has a baritone voice you would want to use a high cut switch. The opposite is true. You would want to roll off some of the bottom end and emphasize the mids or high end for intelligibility.
    This microphone will give you maximum intelligibility without sounding too bassy or too thin by using this compensation, but please understand the comment may have been a slip of the tongue since you tend to speak rather quickly at some points when you meant the opposite, in practice.
    The same would hold even if you were a singer in a recording studio with a broadcast microphone or a high-end condenser mic.

    Chief Dan Matthews (Broderick Crawford) had a great microphone on "Highway Patrol". He was always muttering "10-4" into it.

    • @radiotvgod
      @radiotvgod ปีที่แล้ว

      That was a hand held. Somehow it seemed to be mandatory in the script that he get out of the car and stretch the coil cord out through the window to talk on it. Never figured out why.

    I have a yaesu & an alinco.
    The yaesu uses the normal rj45 but the alinco uses the 8 pin round.
    Would the 8 pin on the MD-100 work on the alinco

      Not sure but i doubt it as the MD100 draws current from the radio for power.

      Not really sure. The MD100 uses power drawn from the radio but not sure how the 908 is powered.

    Good review Fred, I have the older version MD1, I bought it at a rally many years ago for £120 demonstration model, I think they were about £170 new then, It worked well with my Yaesu FT900AT it was a good match, I was well pleased when I bought the 450D as it also matches this radio as well, Have not tried it on the 450D as yet but will do in the not to distant future, Thanks for the review this will help, John 26CT1582 Brizzle.

    Hi Fred, Nice review... I am currently using the same radio and mic. I am curious what you finally settled on with regard to the main switch under the mic and also the high emphasis and cut off settings. Also are you still getting your best audio reports with EQ-no.2. I too do not have a particularly deep voice. Thanks in advance for your time. 73 de KD2PGJ

      I set the mic switches once and then never changed them :-). Always had good reports. Its a very good budget mic.

    • @radiotvgod
      @radiotvgod ปีที่แล้ว

      EQ can not emphasize a range that isn’t there. Such as boosting lows in a higher-pitched voice. Some folks confuse EQ with pitch. If not overused, it may however warm up a shrieky tone, but better to cut that higher range than to boost the “ nonexistent“ low end. In those circumstances, I try to fix it at the source such as with a higher, female voice. I might then choose a ribbon microphone which tends to smooth things out a bit.

    Please don’t confuse terms, EQ is NOT an “output boost.”

    • @CB-RADIO-UK
      @CB-RADIO-UK  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure i understand. Please explain more.

    • @radiotvgod
      @radiotvgod ปีที่แล้ว

      You referred to EQ as an “output boost.” It’s different than just turning up the level. It boosts a chosen range of frequencies, so in that respect, the resulting output will be higher if not compensated for or compressed/limited. EQ in the speech range enhances overall intelligibility. Boosting the bass can only result in undesirable content. The transmitter sees those low frequencies and passes them through if not filtered. This often happens from the proximity effect of a mic. That’s why rolloff on the bottom end is so desirable. In music studio recording it is sometimes used to enhance the intelligibility of the singer over a full band in the mix. On a similar topic, there is a device called the Aphex Aural Exciter, which does not change the electrical. It does emphasize frequencies within a sweepable band. This is accomplished by messing with the harmonics to achieve something we call “apparent loudness.“

    ...I resold the microphone as soon as possible. That thing was the biggest piece of crap I had ever owned.....
    "Dynamic microphone without preamplifier".....and that's exactly why you constantly see amateur radio videos of radio operators who own the thing - how they then have to hold a table microphone directly in front of the mouth that the thing makes a reasonably loud modulation.
    Disaster...

    • @CB-RADIO-UK
      @CB-RADIO-UK  ปีที่แล้ว

      Never had a bad audio report on the mic. Picks up my voice well enough 3 feet away. Maybe yours had a fault.

    • @michaelzehrfeld7766
      @michaelzehrfeld7766 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CB-RADIO-UK ...No.. there was no fault at the Microphone......
      I had seen lots of ham radio videos where the operators hold this desktop Microphone in the hand and directly in front of the mouth. This mike has no preamplifier and is just a dynamic Microphone with the same character like a handmike.....
      The audio is very clear and perfect.....but for me and much other operators not loud enough. I use in my shack Icom-microphones....SM8, SM20, SM30.....these are really good mikes with enough power to talk from long distances and have still a loud and clear audio.

    • @CB-RADIO-UK
      @CB-RADIO-UK  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the mic does have an amp as it draws current from the radio. I suppose if you connected it to another radio without a line supply it would just be dynamic.

    • @michaelzehrfeld7766
      @michaelzehrfeld7766 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CB-RADIO-UK ..no - the microphone definitely does not have an integrated preamplifier. Only this "low cut" circuit and the "High Emphasis" switch with which you can influence the sound somewhat. The microphone is otherwise a pure dynamic microphone without preamplifier...
      If the respective operator does not mind if he has to get quite close when talking despite the table microphone that the transceiver is sufficiently well controlled especially in SSB - then it certainly does not matter and the microphone has otherwise also a crystal clear modulation. Personally, however, I would like to hang relaxed in my chair during my leisurely morning rounds and discuss the microphone with an outstretched arm and still be heard loud enough, hi....
