I commented something along the the lines in previous video that surely someone in the UK could fix the ECU and probably has experience with GM electronics. If anything seems riskier to me shipping twice across the pond than letting someone here give it a go.

It's a great event. I noticed your comment about possibly having the ECM repaired by Paul@Saab. That would be fantastic if he can do it for you. The vinyl discs on the wall of your studio look cool. When I look at your corvette wheels, they are so stylish, a ZR1 wheel would look amazing as wall art too.
Vince a decent guy to help you fellows out. Love that C5 too.
    Thanks for video guys .

I’ve taken the ECU apart on various 4th & 5th gens that had similar issues. I found with a magnifying glass that many soldered spots on the circuit board were cracked. I touched them all with a hot soldering iron and that brought most of them around.

368 is a big bore stock stroke motor. The sleeves are bored out and replaced to go to a 4" inch bore. Haibeck is one of the bigger tuners still building LT5s.

Here's a thing......when it's running, try tapping fairly hard and sharply on the braincase. It may be you notice an improvement ,or maybe otherwise. This is a recognised trick with C4 brains, refeered to as a 'tap test' . When I got my C4 , the brain was iffy, and I learned about this on the forums . It briefly ran fine for a second or two most times, other times would stall or idle-up . A rebuilt brain fixed t right up , no more issues. All symptoms completely banished. DHL'd it to Zip Corvette for rebuild , as brains for a '93 were like dobby-horse manure, you had to have your own re-done. Only '93's , all others avaiable off the shelf. Took about 3 and a half weeks to get back and cost about 340 quid. Don't know if they can do a one for a Zee, might be a plan?

Last night watched an episode of Mike Brewer Wheeler dealers with Ant Anstead on a Corvette Z06. He had an electrical component in the car which would cost over $1000 to replace but found an electronics specialist who diagnosed which component on the circuit board was faulty and replaced it for around $10. The other main fault with the car was it needed a clutch replacement - which Ant did. Good luck getting yours fixed.

That red G Reg After Aug.1st 89’ to July 90’ ZR-1 was the exact spec that Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys ordered his when they first announced that they would release it. I’m sure he paid $100,000 back then to get into one of the first ones. Saw it in a Museum.
Some were 89’s and have slightly different wheels than the 90’ examples have. I also have 89’ ZR-1 Wheels on my 85’ White on Red interior Vette. “The -A -Team” spec. One.

@@Auto_Funk you are more than welcome. 🙏🏻 The lead singer Brian Wilson had a succession of new Corvette’s since the 60’s. That continued into the 2000’s with Vettes.
If you search here in you tube you can see him hanging out on the driveway talking Corvettes that he discussed other the C4 ZR-1 to his “friend” Doctor Landy while sitting in a Convertible 88’ C4. And a music video he was making featuring a few c4’s.

I had an 86’ Convertible Vette before and it had issues with starting up. What fixed it was a new fuel pump and strainer in the tank and a new Vats override key that was $325 from Canada . They both fixed the problem right up. Started up with half a key turn after that. So it could be also a similar issue for your 91’. Hopefully it’s just what you found today. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

What a great car show! Maybe Vince would allow you to install his working ECU into your car? If your car STILL ran rough with his known good ECU, it might save the time and expense of shipping it off. I thought that would be a possibility to surely eliminate your ECU as being faulty. Of course if your car ran much better, consistently with Vince's ECU, yes I would think your ECU would have a faulty component inside. Usually cracked solder joints, or leaking capacitors can be a culprit in that case.

Second comment from the sunshine state 🌴 Florida.
Since you don’t want to drive it on the road, and let things perhaps clear themselves because it’s been sitting idle so long then…
Why don’t you just bring it to get M.O.T’d, and then if you fail it, they will tell you why, and then easy ! just go after those things.
They probably will be more accurate and won’t just say. “ oh well it just doesn’t run right” they will likely pinpoint the issues for you:)
Glad to see the sunshine ☀️ finally made its appearance approaching August…

    • @Auto_Funk
      @Auto_Funk  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Hey Jason! It’s nice that we’ve had a bit of sun ☀️ the problem is the UK MOT tests are really basic and they don’t do any investigation into running faults, they just say “worn bush” or “faulty headlight” or whatever so it doesn’t really achieve a lot!
Once the car runs nice we will take it for a mot and film it all for you guys to drink in!

Possibly an internal defect in one of the ICs. Mechanical shock and temperature fluctuations will trigger this symptom. It'll behave like a cold-solder-joint but the problem is inside an IC.
In this particular case it sounds like the Micro-Controller chip is failing on the Logic Board and the ECM is switching to LIMP-MODE.

First and foremost, many thanks to the legend that is "Vince" - what a guy to allow you to connect a dodgy ECU to his perfectly running ZR1, just to suss out if your one was knackered, which turns out was definitely the issue to the running issue of yours! Just a quick whinge though with your filming - too much auto focusing NOT working, so perhaps switch to manual settings if you can, to prevent blurring out some interesting segments - sorry, I can't talk, as my history with filming with my Android phone camera is far worse than your excellent efforts! At the end of the day though, my hats off to you both for your splendid efforts to re-commission this Icon of a "proper" muscle car, and can't wait till it's MOT'd and driving down the tarmac on the UK roads with two fingers up to the ULEZ supporters - mainly referred to as Mr Sadiq Khan!

I have to admit, you got me
I genuinely thought you were avoiding the red C1, especially after you looked at the white/white/white C4 and turned around :P
Glad you checked the ECM before sending it out, a simple broken solder joint on a connector would've been annoying to see on a receipt from the states. Wonder what's actually wrong.

Agreed! Aside from our questionable skills we struggled with the AF settings and exposure compensation in this episode for some reason… We’re learning for you boys don’t worry! ☺️☺️

With a wasted spark system, when misfiring BADLY, which your car is doing, it still sounds half assed ok. That is not a car that should be driven in its current state. Hopefully you get a new ECM into it soon. With symptoms as described, it sounds like a bad ECM. Obviously, I haven't finished your video yet.

Oooh don't start that "it's all part of its charm" nonsense 😂 they are nice cars and worthy of trying to get it as nice as possible, not talking roadster shop chassis and an LS7 but straight panels good paint, it's worth that, obviously if you can afford it. Not talking kindig customs half a mil price but shouldn't do whats called patina translation can't be arsed.
