Over 20 years of installing carpet here. I quit buying tackless with the 5/8 nails years ago. I get the 1 inch with no nails. I layout the strip the same, but I drill and put a fluted steel nail on each end of the 4 ft. strip, to start and keep moving. I come back later and drill the center of the strip with 3 to 4 more nails. This is efficient and allows me to get the pad on the floor faster. Plus, I've rarely hit the base with this method. I use the square carbide drill bits with the adapter. Since they can burn out fast, I keep 4 in my pocket, so I can switch them out quick. Short pieces and doorways I use the Pam hot glue gun. Doing it this way takes most of the frustration out of concrete jobs.

Nothing more frustrating then slamming on nails that do not sink in the concrete. I’ve got a little over three more years and I will have 20 years in as well!!
One of the guys I have help me does it same way you do. We all have our preferences. I do love the Pam glue gun for small pieces as well. Problem in our area is a lot of the painters don’t tape 6 inches in front of the baseboard and spray paint all over the floor. Sometimes we have issues with the hot glue peeling up with the paint that is not stuck to the concrete.
Good tips, I hate doing concrete floors. Especially when you get a 50 year old home and the concrete is as hard as granite. I usually use construction or tackstrip adhesive and the regular nails but it takes too long. I'm going to have to try it this way.
Here in az I use a 32oz hatchet hammer from Orcon, I’ve used it for about 2 years consistently & the head finally broke. Got a new one & I’ve been liking it ever since. I find carpenter hammers being too big & standard hammers to light. This one is the perfect blend with the extra weight helping drive nails down. But recently I’ve seen a product called “ Spotnails lt50 concrete nail gun “ & I wonder how good it actually is. All you need is an air compressor & you're good. You would save so much time & effort with it I’m actually considering purchasing one.
I need to add a tack strip on concrete at a tile transition. Don't like the idea of beating nails into my (old) concrete, so will use construction adhesive. Agree on wearing safety glasses. I've had framing nails pop back and hit my glasses. Concrete nails aren't as springy and secured in the tack strip, but never say never.
35 years as an installer. The concrete around here is next to impossible to drive into unless it’s new. I prefer to just cut to the chase and use the 1x1 Powerhold tack strip. I use a DEWALT SDS drill with a 3/16 bit. This particular drill has an onboard vacuum attachment that keeps the basement from filling with dust when you drill a few hundred holes. I will drill next to the 1” ring nail, drop the nail in the hole and drive a roofing nail in with it. I will drive 6 or 7 nails per strip. Roofing nails are cheap, and the ring nail/ roofing nail combo is permanent. Never had one fail. I only have to go around the room once and after a quick vacuum I’m ready for pad and power stretching.
This is done a lot in Florida but they use aluminum pins like this dude is using!! I just did a tearout about 6months ago. It was done with with roofing nails!! 40yrs never seen it before!! Yes those strips where a bi$%@ to rip out. Now I know,, thank you very much!!

I heard this is the way they do it in Florida!! Like the tri- track it so much easier to hook the stretch!! Like you said , try and take that strip up. It's a pain in the arse!! I charge extra for concrete !! More materials and labor!!
Is the edge of the floor-wall joining softer than say the middle of a pour3d concrete floor? Concrete nails dont go in when doing tap-down metal edging, like carpet to bare floor?! Does a painted floor seal a slab as to stop nails from penetrating?
The issue we find with those is an a lot of new construction they spray the paint on the wall and do not tape or cover the perimeter. All that paint Has to be ground off so the adhesive will bond to the concrete. It’s just too big of a pain in the butt to haul in the grinder and dust collection just to put down tackstrip. Plus I have yet to find a customer that will pay me to grind their brand new concrete!

I see a lot of installers using these metal handle hammers for driving nails into concrete. I’m from Texas and no way could you use this type of hammer for nailing concrete, the vibrations would kill your hands. The concrete is so hard here. We use a good 20 oz wood handle hammer.

I think the Concrete for this house was poured maybe 90 days prior to us installing the carpet. Always nice to work on you new concrete!

Concrete is so hard the nails in tackstrip just blow out concrete. I needed to drill in holes to reinforce
