    Ledger uses 2 chips to secure the keys. This means the chip cannot be overloaded to lever access to the keys. This is not possible with Trezor because that uses only 1 chip.
    Ledger supports more crypto assets than Trezor
    Trezor however is fully open source
    If you have the money, why not keep both a Ledger and a Trezor?
    You need to store your recovery seed phrase on permanent storage. Don't just write it down on paper, paper burns or can be destroyed by water etc
    One way is to etch or stamp it onto metal.
    Some ideas of storage medium are:
    Dog tags
    Metal washers
    Metal plate
    Never never ever ever store your recovery phrase online, EVER

Utilising third party dApps and services hence the fees are significantly higher then top 5 CEXs and region dependent the availability of those services. If you are just starting out and want to practice with a few coins on a more frequent trade, swap, staking basis etc just go on any popular CEX. • @Whale15
      @Whale15 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Yes. With your recovery phrase in hand you could restore your wallet on any device. To build confidence I recommend buying two separate devices and practice recovering like 20$. Try wiping one with a factory reset, then recovering the wallet. Try sending coins back and forth to two different wallets. Try making the same wallet on two devices. Etc. i did all this a while back and it makes you feel comfortable with cold storage as you get really familiar with the process. Just think of every scenario in which things could go wrong and run through all the scenarios. Same with seed phrase storage. It’s a big responsibility to hold all your coins but with rehearsals like these it allows for more peaceful sleep at night.
      Also reminder to factory reset/wipe any device you get; even after making sure it was from a credible source. Never use a seed phrase already on a device when shipped to you. Takes 5 min to reset, throw in new firmware, and write down a new phrase.

    • @mat33
      @mat33 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You can lose 50 cold wallets and as long as you have your 12 to 24 word seed phrase then you can recover your coins. Your coins aren't "on" the cold wallet. They are on the blockchain and the wallet just allows you to have your own keys instead of having an exchange like Coinbase hold the keys for you. I was nervous about cold wallets, too. Learn about them and get one. They aren't that scary, just be sure the keep your seed phrase safe and secure. If you lose your cold wallet then you can recover your crypto and then move to a new wallet address to be extra safe. The stories of people losing their crypto from cold storage are user error and being careless.

    • @tensevo
      @tensevo ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Just realize that Ledgers deteriorate over time. I'm not sure if it's actual planned obsolescence, but that last time I went to use mine the screen wouldn't work properly. I could tell the device was working, but I couldn't read anything on it because the character lighting was so dim that there was almost zero contrast with the background. Basically the battery was failing, or whatever converts the power from the USB port. Thankfully I have an extra device at another location that I've never used, so when I get a chance I'll go switch to that one. But I will use it knowing that it too will die in a few years. Be prepared.

    • @MrFooChops
      @MrFooChops ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there are whole forums discussing issues with battery issues on Ledger devices. For instance many batteries don't hold charge straight out of the box or failed very shortly after. You can still power the device by just powering it from you laptop usb but that's beside the point

      @@btsoc1397 yes, you’re right. Also it’s "only" the e-mail address and these were "only" phishing attacks - I would claim that most crypto users would be able to spot a phishing mail, or at least be smart enough to not hand out their private keys.

    I've been looking into the Arculus wallet, cause I really like the idea of a steel card & how it is 3FA, it takes a pin, the card & connection to your phone w/biometrics to unlock it. Though it is relatively new & coin support is somewhat limited, hopefully it will grow quickly. I'd like to see more on setup of some of the security ideas you mention, such as setting up a dummy account, though I get the idea & could likely figure it out,once I have a device to do so with.

    • @chuchinboots3245
      @chuchinboots3245 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have one. The fact that it's a card makes it unsuspecting to no coiner normies. It's a rather interesting wallet that uses your phones NFC to setup, restore, unlock wallet and sign transactions. 3FA works with biometrics, PIN and the card itself; if you don't have biometrics enabled, it will still work as 2FA using PIN and card (you still need the card to sign transactions).
      As for coins and tokens, you are right, they are super limited, though by the looks of it, idk if they'll ever roll out support for other native coins any time soon.

    • @stuart_oneill

      Be careful with biometrics. Cop wants to unlock just tries a facial unlock and then accidently presses a finger to rtc. Etc.

    • @chuchinboots3245
      @chuchinboots3245 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@russbilderback signing transactions is surprisingly easy since all you have to do is hold the card to the back of your device, along with PIN and biometric.
      As for the apps ease of use, its passable.
      I still have a bit of trouble when sending coins, there is no send all option so sending off the entire stack is not possible. Sending all from Exodus and Ledger can deduct from the top of the stack, Arculus needs a remaining balance.
      All things considered, I like it. I just received the new card upgrade (more coin support). The app itself could use more work.
