Great advice, good maintenance is key to long life. Good design is another important factor. My 70 year old Colchester student still going strong.

Yep, also keeping grease out of sight and under cover helps!

Unfortunately my Dad is not anywhere near as meticulous as you when it comes to cleaning & maintaining and my ongoing project to get his lathe in decent order is coming along slowly. It is great to be able to watch as you confidently move methodically along. The gearbox oil is black and needs draining, your very neat trick with the paper is going to come in handy although on the smaller lathe the drain point is more convenient. After draining & cleaning with paraffin is any residual going to cause problems?

@infinitesoulluos no the parrafien won't leave any harmful residue. I actually add 10% oil for added corrosion protection...

What brand of lathe is that? I have a Craftex 709 (13×24) and it is identical to yours.

It's an Adendorff lathe (they have a few nice options), The code is on the side of the gearbox. Yep most of these lathes are very similar. I've seen identical lathes sell for a fortune, just rebranded, although that specific tool supplier is battling. I think people are catching on.

Please stop the speeded up dialogue! Content is generally great but would be good to actually get through one project rather than jumping around so much!
