      That's the good thing about being debt free and home paid off.
      Opportunity in the form of a inheritance or other windfall happens and it's that much sweeter. She has options.

      You make a good point and I don’t blame her! She has enough money now where she can focus on being a realtor. She can use the money she has to cover the year of not making much as she gets through the test, etc. after a while, that will be her new gig and she will be back making more than she ever did!

    Excellent advice from both of you. Losing a job and the death of a parent are two of the biggest stressors in life. Bittersweet is the legacy she is left.

    Listened to this with a few others on 10/1/22… this video was posted 9/2/22… and its now post-Ian. I pray that this lady’s home was not severely damaged, and that her real estate career adventure is somehow NOT altered. Prayers for her and the year she has had. May her faith & may hope keep her strong.

      Probably feel suspect to you because you're not familiar with wealth transfer within family.
      One of my sisters reacted like this woman when we received knowledge of our inheritance when dad died. We all were debt free as well.

    I got laid off on a surprise call along with a group of us. We had the rest of the day to clean out our computers. They gave us a 6 week severence pay. Some places hire on an "at will" basis. You can dump them or they can dump you.

      Depends on the State you work in. For Instance, Florida is an “at will” State for employment. So, ANY employer can fire you at will, in Florida. Well, unless you work for a union.

    I have been layed off twice in the past, I was given a notice, when I walked in the doors and a pink slip was handed to me, 10-15 minutes notice, so it was a notice, Jesus always provides 👍

    Years ago, I was let go among layoffs. At least I received 6-months severance. It was a punch to the gut, but I got back on the horse and now make close to 2X just a few years later. Bottom line: I was being short-changed. Also, once I realized my value, I was able to aim for much more impactful work, doing what I love.

    Chill out Lady. Buy a cheap reliable car for right now. Take the time off if needed to go through the first holiday after your Mom and then when the new year comes look for a better paying job. At that point you can upgrade to whatever car you want.

      Well we don’t know her mom’s situation. It could be a long agonizing illness where perhaps passing is a blessing. The fact the she call and ask for Dave’s advice means she wants to spend responsibly. A lot of people will blow it all within a year or two.

      thank God I have never been through this situation, and I would like to never go through it, but life is like that, but sometimes, many people who lose loved ones, prefer to remember them in a happy way, as they would like to be remembered, I just guess, I really don't know, or knowing that you can't change anything, you resign yourself to the reality.

      Agreed. I work for a rental car company in the wholesale department. The values of cars are overpriced, I was laid off in 2020 and bought a used 2017 civic with 24k miles for $16k cash. Got my job back but still am holding onto this car that is now inflated valued at $23000. I'm not selling it in case I get laid off. when I buy a car I keep it until the engine goes out.

      To get ahead and accomplish all baby steps,
      live and spend within or below your means. That means not taking on debt and only spending for necessity so that a remainder can be saved or invested.
      If you're not saving/investing or paying off debt, you're not making progress.
      Having that in mind,
      I wouldn't allow a windfall of cash to outrageously affect my spending habits.
      If she has all other finances in order for present and future she shouldn't have hesitation as long as she's buying responsibly.

    Good advice from Dave as usual.
    Renting a car or two for a week makes sense.
    If you do not need a big car, I would buy a new smaller Toyota for 25K.
    If you drive it for 20 years, then the depreciation does not matter.
    Be sure to rollover your 401K to an IRA and if your income is not over
    85K, convert some or more to a Roth ASAP.
    Becoming a Realtor now may work out well, and no matter what, learning about it will
    be worthwhile.

    Gotta love it, if you don’t put in a 1-2 week notice you can’t use them as a reference when they drop you in a day. If we have to give notice of quitting, why don’t they have to give notice of laying you off? If it’s about money it takes longer than one day for them to acknowledge they are hurting to make payroll, but they can get rid of you in 20 minutes

    I think she quit and didn't get laid off when she got that big payday. She doesn't sound too sad about her mother passing away actually sound kinda excited about the money. Dave asked her about returning to work and I can tell you that lady is never returning to work until that 500k is gone.

      My daughter died and I received life insurance for her. I bought a house with it and I was thrilled about that. Didn't make my grief less. Smiling doesn't mean you aren't grieving. Your allowed to be happy even when someone you love dies.

    I am a wholesaler for a rental car company with fleet privileges, and I think you were laid off at the company I am still working for. I am liquidating the fleet to dealers and I see the layoffs coming after I liquidate the rental fleet. Anyways Jeep Grand Jerokees are junk, buy a Subaru or Honda or Toyota

      How many people can say they have home paid off with zero debt before a windfall?
      I wouldn't be in a hurry to invest in this economic climate. Takes time anyway if you want to do it right.
      In the mean time a nice dependable new or used car with cash would be nice gift for herself to complete the debt free household.
