  • Eero's new pro mesh Wi-Fi system brings Wi-Fi 6 speeds and capacity and support for Thread and Zigbee for smart home accessories. But after upgrading from their second generation system, is the Eero Pro 6 still my choice for home Wi-Fi?

    Hi Eric,
    great video, you mentioned you can receive notifications whenever a specific device (eg a family member arrives home) - how did you set that up? So far i‘ve only been able to do that with new devices that have never been on the network before.

    Awesome video, thank you. I just purchased eero pro 6 and I'm trying to figure out how to turn of my Xfinity gateway's wifi so I can fully take advantage of eero pro's wifi mesh system. Should I turn off xfinity's wifi or put it in bridge mode? I wish you had a video to configure the modem/router. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

    It’s been a while from this video… is the Thread network in the Eeros working with HomeKit now? Thanks before hand!

    Great video Eric. I have Eero 6 pro and a Thread network. Thread network enabled on the Eero’s. It just does not work together. Trying to add thread devices to Eero’s - it keeps on telling me my iPhone should be connected to the same network, which it is. For me the main disappointment of the Eero’s, for the test they are awesome.

      Thanks Michael! I like that suggestion. My current space is still a little bit of a work in progress but when it settles down I'll do a video because I'm really happy with how it's turning out.

    I would’ve loved to see a comparison in response time with HomeKit devices or scenes and automations in comparison with a standalone router and just overall reliability comparison

      @SethLongdotcom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anecdotal evidence, I know, but I used to get fairly regular “no response” messages in Home but haven’t seen it much, if at all, since I installed eero about a year ago.

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great suggestion Archie. There are so many variables here between different homes and different setups that I think it would be hard to show useful data in a test, and it would take a lot of time that I don't really have to produce that kind of video.

    Hi Eric. Great video again. Heard you say not to turn on Homekit router support. I have an Eero Pro that I bought last year for my set up. I did turn it on afterward. I am trying to add an Eve Cam to what I have. Never had problems in the past but now I just can’t. Could it prevent that for some reasons. Thanks.

      I'm not sure. Eve tends to be pretty good about supporting things like that. I would reach out to their support to help get your camera online. www.evehome.com/en-us/support

    If I use the eero as a gateway router, will I be able to change things like the ghz from 5 to 2ghz (for smart devices temporarily)? I have internet and am just looking to boost signal and get easy access to advanced settings like I mentioned with temporarily changing the ghz

    Eric - love your channel. Big question - I purchased and installed the eero mesh system (3 units) in my cabin. The main reason was to get better, even wi-fi throughout. I never had a problem with the old Netgear NightHawk system, but the eero drops the connection around 20x/day for about 2 minutes each. Very annoying. I've repositioned everything at least 3 times and that doesn't change anything. I've spoken with eero tech support. They had me do a 24 hr ping test as they suspected my ISP's system - not true. The NightHawk never dropped the connection, but I'm faced with a very expensive system that simply frustrates the heck out of my and my family. Any thoughts?

    • @PyroAficionado
      @PyroAficionado 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending upon how big your cabin is, you might have too many or too few satellite nodes. We would think that the more saturated the network is, the better; (for example, as many nodes as possible) but that’s just not the case. If they overlap too much they may cause more problems with stepping on each other. Try removing the system, then reinstall the main router. Then go find where your signal starts to drop off and place another. Then play around with the placement, fine tuning it, until you’re happy. If they are too close it may cause issues. You may only need 2, my friend. :) hope that helps!

    • @tomvetterani9653
      @tomvetterani9653 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PyroAficionado thanks for responding. I did a signal strength study before placing the beacons. The overlap is less than 10% across the router and two beacons. Support pushed a firmware update that appears to be solid. As an added insurance policy I installed a new Arris Docsis 3.1 modem. I’ve been packet monitoring for 9 days and only lost 6. I’m counting it solved for now.
      Thanks again.
      Tom

    I have three eero 6 stations in my house, I just purchased the eero 6 Pro three pack and plan on installing them. Should I add them on or replace the older ones completely? I was told if I have too many in the house it could cause over saturation and cause problems. But I have no clue if that's true and can't seem to find an answer on google. I'm using the eero 6 for my main wifi and homekit. Thanks for the great videos, I always look forward to them.

    • @EricWelander

      What I've done in the past is to use one of my older eero routers as an additional base station in my garage. I might return to doing this again. I would think about doing something like that. Install your Eero 6 base stations as a replacement for your existing ones. Then add your existing ones back in if there are areas still lacking in signal quality.

    Great video! Does the Eero iOS app allow for easy “on/off” of 5GHz network? I use this feature a lot to pair security and smart devices to 2.4 and it’s a huge pain with my ISP router.

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, you do not have the ability to specify 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz with anything in the Eero settings. If you are interested in that I would look at another brand like Linksys

    So I need your help/advice regarding which of the two connection methods I should go with, the bridge mode or the "gateway router" option. I have a modem/router from Verizon (FIOS) which has wifi, and I would still like to use the internet from that modem/router to connect my TV & apple TV for example. I am just getting the Eero to boost the wifi in my home. So should I go bridge mode that way I still have the features that my isp provides? TIA for your help.

    I am a home kit user and own many Apple products; privacy is a must for me. I remember seeing eero’s in the apple online store, but now it isn't. Also, seeing it is an Amazon company, I don't use Alexa, am not interested in and don't want to be bombarded with Amazon services. There is this other brand of mesh wifi that seems affordable, and I've received good opinions of friends that use it; it is the Tenda Nova MW6; what do you think about it?

    • @EricWelander

    I have one of those all in one boxes from my cable provider. Tv, modem
    And router. There’s apparently no way to put the box in bridge mode. I can plug the eero into one of the ports on the back of the box but the cable wifi will still broadcast. Wondering if it’s worth keeping the eero in this setup or just get a couple of wifi extenders. I got the eeros mainly to deal with dead spots and to get better signal to the back patio. Not sure what to do. Any input would be appreciated from anyone. Lol.

    Assuming your ISP (internet) is down but WiFi (wireless local network) is up, can you still control HomeKit accessories via your mobile device?
    I seem to have read from Dongknows that Eero requires internet access just to access the Eero Pro 6

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't seen this yet. In the past my internet connection can be down while many things in HomeKit still work. There are a lot of variables here, and thankfully my internet hasn't gone out recently.

    A question and two comments. The question: I turned on Thread on my Eero Pro 6 thinking that this was Nirvana. But you say that it doesn't work with HomeKit? I have two Eve/Thread devices that work great. I use Apple TV as my HomeKit hub. Is it supplying the Thread protocol?
    Comments: I have my three base stations connected to my wired network via what is called a "backhaul connection". I think that is Nirvana. Wired will always give a faster connection between base stations than wireless mesh. Second comment: All of my base stations are out in the open for better Wi-Fi signal strength. I wouldn't want 4 or 6 or 8 cables sticking out of the back. I prefer using one of the ports for backhaul and the other to connect to an unmanaged switch that's hiding away in a cabinet. Because I have a backhaul connection for each base station, that means all devices with wired connections get the full speed of my wired network.

    a) eero didn't ship until 2016, so... no you didn't
    b) eero does not use a dedicated backhaul radio.

      a) Yes, I meant 2016! 🤦‍♂️
      b) You are right. Bespoke probably wasn't a correct word to describe this: "they use all available wifi channels and algorithms to identify what the best means of transmitting data will be" from community.eero.com/t/x2ht09b/wireless-backhaul-speeds
