  • We recently built a second roost for our chicken coop to create room for our growing flock. This video walks you through exactly what you need to do to build a simple chicken roost at home and compares two different chicken roost designs that we've used.

Very cute watching the curious chicken explore the roost 😆

I would like a flat wide roosting bar I think if I were a hen so that I felt supported when I slept and also able to keep my feet warm in winter. I’m not sure a hen would agree . Obviously they manage to lock their toes around whatever so long as the wood doesn’t have sharp edges they don’t seem to mind , but wouldn’t it be nice to work out their preference.

Yes, wouldn’t it be nice to get inside their heads 😋. At the end of the day, I think as long as they’re safe and warm, they’re happy. Thanks for watching!

im interested to see if there is a preference between round or flat, in my reading i heard the top priority roost is the highest roost. Also having all roosts at same height helps deter picking on eachother.

I’ll be curious too! So far they’re taking some time to warm up to it but a couple of the chickens seemed to have switched from the round to flat. And that’s interesting about having the roosts at the same height. Thanks for watching!

We have our roosts at the same height and it is a royal rumble at night.

Awesome video thank you! Going to try this at home. DID YOUR CHICKENS END UP PREFERRING ONE DESIGN OVER THE OTHER? ROUND OR STRAIGHT? Thanks .....Subscribed! 🥰

Awesome, thanks! In all honesty it's been somewhat of a draw. What ended up happening was the older batch of chickens we have stuck with the branch roost and then the younger batch claimed the new 2x4 roost as their own 🤣. So if anything, it just gave each of them their own space. Both have worked out great though and at the end of the day, I just don't think chickens are that picky as long as they have a place to roost! Thanks for watching!

They would really like it if you added two more boards

You know, I've thought about rearranging the layout of the rungs a bit lately on the ladder. I think 2 more might be too close and then they'd be pooping all over each other. But I've thought about removing the middle rung and then adding two more rungs back between the top and bottom rung. I think it all depends on how many chickens you have and the space you're working with. Thanks for watching!

Made a smaller one for my coop today.

It is my understanding that its best to have just a single level of roosts as the chickens will fight to get on the highest rung. This does make less space for roosting.

I can definitely see where that would make sense and be ideal. But I also think the pecking order is a pretty natural occurrence with birds and don’t think I’d be too concerned with that playing out on the roost. I rarely see chickens get too bent out of shape over roost position. Thanks for watching!

We have found this to not be true. At least, not in our birds' case. They happily brawl into the evening jockeying for the best position on the same height bars.

So which roost did your chickens show a preference for? The old one or the new one?

    • @FromScratchFarmstead
      @FromScratchFarmstead  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Honestly, I'll call it a draw 🤣. They're pretty split on some gravitating toward the branch roost and some gravitating toward the 2x4 roost. I think the more important thing is making sure you have ample roost space overall. Thanks for watching!

Man your chicken roost in that???
I put my roost bars at a foot apart and they're stumbling down it!
Is it because it's their first roost? I just put them outside Sunday. They're 8 weeks

I wanted to make sure they had plenty of space but I will probably go back in and add one more wrung at some point. It just depends how much you want them pooping all over each other :) Thanks for watching!
