    If I were to make such a list...
    Rangefinder:
    Primary:Minolta CLE with 40mm Rokkor lens. This camera was the result of a collaboration between Minolta and Leica. Some Leica users wanted a little second body in case they wanted to load a second camera with b&w film or to have something to take to the park just in case a picture needed taking. They hired Minolta to design and build this little camera...Leica sold it as the CL and Minolta, with a better metering system, as the CLE. The fun part about this camera: The lens mount is Leica M, so any bayonet Leica lens hooks right up, no problem at all.
    Alternate: Leica makes a range of fixed-lens cameras that works very well.
    Non-pro manual focus 35mm SLR:
    Primary: Minolta X-700. This is a good solid camera with excellent glass that sells for so cheap you can buy four or five bodies just in case one breaks. Which probably won't happen. (I had one of these.)
    Alternate: Contax ST. Uses Zeiss lenses. Has ceramic pressure plate. Takes very good pictures.
    What not to get: Used Pentax K1000. Ninety percent of the yearbook photos in the "film" era of yearbook production were shot on these. By high school kids. Who drop cameras. Frequently. They made these cameras until 1997, so you might be able to find a New In Box one...if you can, grab it. A K1000 that hasn't been dropped is a very good machine.
    Pro manual focus 35mm SLR:
    Primary: Canon F-1. I chose it over the Nikon F3 because I felt like it. Canon, Nikon, Minolta and Olympus all made a camera that was utterly reliable, fully featured and rugged enough that you could use it as a club and fight your way out of a riot with it. So...I picked the Canon.
    Alternate: Olympus OM-1N. As rugged as a Canon or Nikon but a hell of a lot smaller.
    What not to get: Nikon F. These were built in the 1950s and used hard.
    Pro autofocus 35mm SLR:
    Primary: Nikon F4S. F5 has a more advanced meter and F6 isn't nearly as huge, but I prefer the "one knob per function" Nikon esthetic, and the F4 was the last pro Nikon to have it. It's also less expensive. (I own one now.)
    Alternate: My only brand repeat: Canon EOS-1 series. I like the EOS-1 because it's a lot smaller than the F4 and as good. I went with F4 because I always wanted an F4.
    What not to get: I don't know...one that's broken?
    Medium format camera:
    Primary: Mamiya 645 Pro TL. Mamiya invented the 6x4.5cm film format - fifteen frames per roll of 120. For a very long time, the standard Pro Wedding Camera was a Mamiya 645 bolted to a Metz 60CT-1 flash. Because it was, there are a ton of good used lenses on the market for this mount. The Pro TL is the last one before they went autofocus, so it's the least likely to be worn out. (I have one of these too.)
    Alternate: Bronica ETRS. Same film format as the M645, but less popular when these were new so the prices are lower.
    What not to get: Mamiya RB67. This camera is truly wonderful. It makes nice huge negs that are so sharp you can shave with them. It has bellows focus for built-in macro focus with any lens in the range, the back revoives so you can shoot verticals without turning the body on its side...except for the fact an RB67 with a metering prism and 250mm lens weighs ten pounds, it would be perfect. The weight ALONE is enough to get me to warn you against them.

    • @guptageneralstores5243
      @guptageneralstores5243 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There is a difference. Store prices are always a bit more coz you get to check every single element and get what you see. Also in this particular video, they raided shops that had cameras in excellent condition. If you try to buy near mint ones, you will see that these prices are not that hiked. Of course, you can find a more used and yet as much effective model for a fraction of that price, but condition totally dictates the price

    My pick would be the Nikon FE, just because it's much lighter and more compact than an F3. I'm still in love with this camera, after about 20 years of using one.

    • @makeithappen2014
      @makeithappen2014 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree: Any of the FE/FM/FA family are fantastic tools: Actually better than the F3, as they offer 1/200-1/250s flash synchro, over the rather lame 1/80 of the F3 - which makes fill-in flash a chore. My personal favourite has always been the FE2 (with an E-type screen) - THE perfect 35mm SLR, if there is such a thing.

      Oh, that'd be interesting. There are a ton of old cameras with AMAZING lenses that you can get for next to nothing. I got a Kodak Retina with a Schneider-Kreuznach Xenar 2.8/50 for $40 about a year ago. It is SO sharp and SUCH a challenge to use. It's a lovely thing.

    • @jbmaru
      @jbmaru 10 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Yeah for $1000 you could have a full APS-C DSLR & lenses kit tbh, $100 would be a better challenge for film cameras, as most hobbyists won't spend $1000 on one.

    After watching this episode, I researched the Nikon F3 for a couple of days.
    Then went to my local camera store (the local camera stores in America are getting scarce because of superstores and online shopping) and I found Nikon F3 body in great shape. So I'm looking forward to playing with it as soon as I get a lens for it.
    Thanks Bellamy.

  • @EATB80
    @EATB80 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Love the F3 pick. I have the HP version and the meter is incredible on that thing. Not to mention that the viewfinder is GORGEOUS. Bought it used for just over 100US bucks. Added a used 35 2.8 AI lens, and I'm good to good.

  • @foto2011
    @foto2011 10 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I would suggest:
    Voigtlander Bessa R3A/R3M instead of the Contax G2 because it is a current model that can still be serviced and it takes Leica M-mount lenses.
    Nikon FE2 instead of the F3 because it has 1/250sec flash synch speed Iideal for fill flash) and is smaller/lighter.
    Yashica Electro 35 GSN/GTN or Canon Canonet G-III QL instead of Contax T2/T3 because they are much cheaper and have excellent lenses.
    Bronica ETRSi with 75mm PE lens instead of Pentax 67 because it is much smaller and lighter. PE lenses are top performers.
    Voigtlander Bessa R3A/R3M (see above) instead of the Nikon S2 rangefinder.

    I can't argue that the F3 is a great camera, but as far as value for money goes it's so hard to beat FD mount Canons. I've had an FTb for ages. It's super basic, match needle metering only, no automatic anything and a maximum shutter speed of 1/1000. It's very simple, but it is extremely intuitive to use, very quick and has a HUGE and bright .85x magnification finder. I love that little camera, it's a very minimalist functional wonder.
    At the other end of the FD mount spectrum is the A-1, which isn't as durable as the all metal FTb, but it has Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and full-auto exposure.
    Of course, FD mount lenses tend to be excellent. The FD system was Canon's first attempt to take on Nikon in earnest, and they did a magnificent job. There are a ton of fast, sharp FD lenses with great color characteristics available(and the "nifty-fifty" f/1.4 is one of the best of all time... the f/1.2L is even better).
    I have a Canon F-1 as well, and I find the FTb is nicer to use and better ergonomically. I've been putting up with a defect in the finder for ages because I haven't had the heart to replace that trusty old warhorse with another FTb body.
    Seriously Kai, spend some time with the FD system today, you'll be glad you did.

    I own a lot of film and there are tons under $1K USD.
    - Nikon F3HP with motor drive with a Nikon 50mm f/1.2 AS-I lens.
    - Nikon F5 which is very affordable! Only $250 and up on eBay, some even in mint condition. With the left over, you can get multiple lenses for it.
    - Another for under $1K, would be the Nikon F6 body. Great thing is it uses any Nikon lenses, even the older version lenses. It will meter it.
    - Contax RTS II with motor drive and a 50mm f/1.4 lens.
    I'm surprised you guys didn't even mention the Canon F1!

    Always glad to have a new AnalogRev episode, but I'm a bit disappointed that medium format only got a little blip out of the whole episode. MF cameras range from cheap TLRs and lomography cameras to expensive rangefinders and models of all sorts. Given that digital cameras have tanked the prices of MF cameras in a way unthinkable 20 years ago, I would greatly enjoy learning more about what quality and bang-for-buck pieces are out there.

      Bellamy Hunt Hey, Bellamy. I just had to come back to this to let you know, I put in four "Ultimate Lithium" Energizer AA batteries, right before I posted my original comment. No battery grip.
      More than 50% after 14 1/2 rolls of film, with a few rolls of 15-30 second long exposures thrown in there, and only shutting the camera off a handful of times... I think that's pretty damn good. (Still shows full battery)
      Though, I understand it'll never match the "battery life" of my FM2 (I never used it powered), for my first metered camera with AF, I'm loving it.

    • @nattankress
      @nattankress 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use 4 Kodak AA Ni-MH and no issue at all after going through a "can" of HP5+ a bit slower in continuous shooting but not much, and you can get AA batteries anywhere, that is why the F100 beats the EOS 3, I had both, and the 2CR2 batteries of the 3 were a PITA to get and buy at like 10 bucks each. (I don't like grips, they are big cameras as they are)

    A great, but more difficult to find camera you forgot, is the Topcon Super D Reflex. Tough, reliable body, and excellent lenses. I bought my first Topcon RE in 1967, and it is still a great working camera. You can also use the Exacta lenses with these cameras. Where Topcon failed, was in marketing, not in quality.
    For a favourite rangefinder camera, for me, it is a tossup between my Canon 7S and my Leica M3. I even have a Russian Leica clone that still works quite well, even after 30 years. It uses the all the standard screw mount rangefinder lenses.

    The Olympus XA is a great 35mm rangefinder camera. Super small clamshell design with very good optics.

    Well I use Contax G2 with 45mm F2, I have to say it is really tough and durable than I expected. I especially love the touch of the grips on the camera body.

    For medium format cameras, for me, the best choice is Mamiya RZ67 Pro + 110mm. If wanting something older, go for the RB67 Pro S + K/L127mm. Any from $400~600 will satisfy.

    The Contax G1 and G2 are VERY sturdy cameras that will still outlast most digital cameras. You can also get a used Leica M2 or M3 and Lens for under $1000.

    notice how Kai doesn't say much when the topic is on cameras and not on human genitals or some sexual lame joke.

      under $1000: 5D, 5DII, D600, D700, D7000 series, or Pentax KP, or K5 (as of early 2018) Best in my book: A used 5DII with MagicLantern 4K hack; I only spent US420 on that. Ahh: Older: Perhaps Nikon D60, a plethora of Canon 1.6x DSLRs. Or even the Kodak Pro SLR/n (I know, lol) ....but: Seriously, seriously good portrait sensor, nikon mount. However, it is heavy, slow, battery hungry and has a crappy menu/screen/ergonomics.... Still, ok in a studio with an external screen, tripod, power-supply, i.e. on life support.... Takes VERY nice images and you'll be the only kid in your town still shooting one.

    I got both of my Canon EOS-1V for around $600-700 each. The last big dog film camera from Canon *and* I can use all my modern "L" glass on them. IF I'm feeling nostalgic for manual focus, just flip the switch on the lens.

    The contax G2 can be serviced and repaired by tocad USA. I had mine repaired in 2014
    Although kyrocera in Japan isn't around any more they still have authorized repair centers
    In Japan that will repair other contax cameras

    • @bellamyhunt2332
      @bellamyhunt2332 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anthony Popovic They do have authorized repair centres, that is true. But due to a lack of parts only certain cameras and certain issues on those cameras can be repaired. The G2 can be for certain issues, but if it is series then it is not possible. Thanks.

    • @michaelangeloh.5383
      @michaelangeloh.5383 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Rubi Cisca - Don't be so literal. The problem is indeed that 1000 Dollars is way too wide and it could be almost anything unless it's some kind of highly sought after rare collectible. Maybe they should've made it 500 or even 250. - And by the way, the point was in comparison with a good 1000 Dollar dSLR, but still, there's no point in spending many hundreds on a film-camera, because there are great ones for little money. - So instead of saying "under a thousand" they might as well be saying "any affordable one".

    great now everyone knows where to get them in HK GOD damn it HAHA !!!!!
    P.S. can u do more analogrev? While watching this video I am glad to know that my father and uncles have taken very good care of their gear from back when they were young. They passed on pretty much in brand new condition. One of my fav is definitely G2. Completely agree with what they said, it is a camera that cannot be fixed, at least not for cheap. However The quality of this camera, and most of all the lens.... oh my god.... haha The joy of this camera .... actually I would say.. is unlike a leica M3 or sth like that, this camera is like " back to the future". Its not the more advance camera out there, but everything about this camera just makes, even a pro to choose it and use it as a daily camera. It just feels.. different! one of my fav cameras

    Submariner and Leica... Bellamy is rich! Even with my love and experience with Fuji Xt1, Leica, Olympus OM and other non menu cameras I thought the F3 was a PITA. For me, F100 or F6 would be easier choices. Retro? Leica iiif... or any Bronica/Mamiya depending on my goals. Cool show and tell and informative.

    I finally sold my 67. the 90mm lens can be had with leaf shutter which is soooo important to avoid the slap, otherwise be sure you have the MLU version a must. It just was too heavy for me and it's not a great studio camera as loading film is tedious. Better is the pricer contax 67. but its YUUUUGE
