    New sub , New Golden doodle owner . Binge watching your videos . I been crate training as I live alone and at times HAVE to go out for grocerys etc . The 2 times I left bailey in the crate she cried the whole time non stop 2 hours , of course my neighbors almost called 911 lol thinking something happend to her ( i live in a apartment ) I tried making the crate fun rewards she will go in no problems . , I have tried all the training vides and nothing . Matter fact Its just me and her and Im home most all the time I think she has already gotten seperation anxiety if she does not see me she has a fit . She is 8 weeks old, potty training is great , she has learned sit already but this dang crate thing she isnt going to have it . .

    I just discovered you and enjoy your videos very much. My Havanese boy just turned 8 months. I have worked with him on Sit,Stay, Down, Come and some small tricks since we brought him home at 8 weeks old. He is good at these in the house, but will sometimes ignore the command outdoors in the yard (I didn't see your video soon enough!) I am going to work on this following how you teach in this video. My question is this: Since I have used the command "come" and he has learned not to always respond, should I use another command now such as "Here" or should I stick with the "Come" command?

    1. I've been practising fetch with my Maltese who'll be 5 months this December, he would bring the ball or toy to me but he'd rufuse to give it up even if i would reward him he would rather fight for it like he's playing tug, maybe once or twice he's given me the ball without fighting for it.
    2. I feel like an idiot cause he follows me everywhere i go and i could've started turning that into recall and reward him, I'm going to start doing that asap.
    3. From my number 2 point of him following me everywhere i go, I am struggling with getting him to stay still or stay with his toys and while leave and go to the other room, as soon as i get up or make a move he drops everything, he would even give up his treat and follow me, I've been trying to get him to stay when i leave for the other room. if he's still in the same spot I would say yes good boy and reward him but that'll happen once in a blue moon. He's gotten clever to a point were when i enforce the stay command with a strict voice he would stay but as soon as i disappear I could he him not walking but very slowly crawling behind me with every pause, when i would check if he's in the same spot I find that he moved from his spot and is instead on a different spot and getting closer to my door, then we have to go back and start all over again, eventually he'd get frustated with me and just follow me anyway and run around the house until i have to grab him and take him to his crate. I just wish I knew how to have him stay in one spot and wait for me to call him or till i return to him. The only way this works is if i have him on a leash in the house and leave him there and I hate doing that i would like him to be okay with not having me close to me even if I'm in the house I just want my baby fur to be a little independent even with me in the house.
    4. When we're are outside for potty breaks while i encourage him to potty which is our go to word he will never potty if i am there with him, it's not a case of shyness but he would rather hold it in and be playful first which is longer than its suppose to it would last an hour to hours sometimes. The only way he would potty right away is when i take him outside and leave him there immediately and close the door with no toys outside so he's not distracted. I would then wait and watch him through my outdoor cctv when he potties as soon as i see he's done I'll go get him and give him a treat right away for doing the deed. He knows were to potty outside, I leave the door open for him but as soon as i leave him outside he comes back in the house unless if i lock the door behind him.
    I know that Matese have separation anxiety which is why I'm happy to be working from home, crate training was hard at first but i followed your training tips and after a while it worked just great he never cries or whines when i leave him in there and I've even moved the crate in the other room out of my bedroom just to train him so he'd know when I'm not at home away on a work trip and my mom has look after him he'll know that "okay" I'm not home.
    Basically he knows all the basics down, sit, handshake, stand, jump and speak. at the moment I am struggling with having him to stay on one spot when i move around the house, even with all the toys and puzzles to distract him he would rather follow me were I go. He does this when he's asleep or during his nap time, if he's sleeping on his bed and not in his crate but in the same room as me as soon as i get up or move he wakes up and watches if i am about to leave the room then he'll follow me and not take his nap.
    Please excuse my typo I typed with my phone as fast I could in the dark.
    What am i doing wrong? I ould all criticism if it means helping my baby fur get over his fear of being by himself.

      You want to increase time before distance. Work your way up to 30 seconds to 1 minute toe to toe with the dog before taking 1 step away. Sometimes you do 10 seconds, pivot back to heel position (hip even with their shoulder), 20 seconds, pivot back, the next 5 seconds. In other words you don't always want to be gradually increasing the time - vary it. Slot machine rather than a vending machine. The other thing you can try is Susan Garrett's hot zone game where they earn value by staying on their bed - their hot zone, or Tom and Lauren's boundary games Nate Schoemer also has an Invisible boundary line to a certain room. Sounds like you might just be progressing too fast for her. Go to the last place and timeframe you were successful. With the fetch, again Susan Garrett's tug games and bring me games. Very short and run away - make it so the obvious and correct choice is to come to you. It also helps to let them win at tug but only when they pull harder, then run away from them so they realize the fun is engaging with you rather than keeping the toy to themselves.

      Use the stuffed Kong or frozen butcher Marrow bone (if vet says it's ok)to make it great to stay and chill on their own bed. Such a high level item they'd rather settle in their bed than follow you to the bathroom. Praise like you're saying stay when they do do what you want too.

      My baby girl just turned 1 yo and she used to be the same cause she’s totally food driven and also a smart stubborn Samoyed. What I was taught and helped a lot was to start every training session with treats but give them to her randomly instead of every single time she follows the command. So when I don’t give a treat to her, I pet her making a very happy and squeaky voice praising her, then next time she follows the command I’d give a treat. So she keeps guessing when she’s gonna hit the jackpot during the training session! Now she follows most of commands with no treats during a regular day in life - but I still give her treats randomly throughout the day when she’s being good at it even when we’re not on a training session.

      So the first thing I teach my classes is Suzanne Clothier's Automatic Check In. When you say the dog's name, their head should whip around. Yes, even in the back yard they check in with you. Of course, you have to mark(with a yes and a treat) it and acknowledge or pay attention to it otherwise it doesn't have much effect. I strongly stress only three times/day for your emergency recall (by emergency I mean a truck is coming and I need you here immediately if not sooner). Do not overuse it! For the first 4 classes (we meet once a week for one hour but the students practice daily in between) the only thing I care about is the enthusiasm! If you allow jumping, this is the one time it's allowed. You also have to keep in mind, you never want to call a dog to you to do something the dog doesn't like - a toe nail trim, bath, etc. and I use a high pitched tone - Dog's name, Come! Think of it like fine dining. Never call the dog to you if you're not 100% sure the dog will come. (So if outside, they have a long line to real them in). You always want to practice with high level treats

    • @robinrutherfordcost4748
      @robinrutherfordcost4748 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the time you need them to come you won't have them, but because you've practiced every single time with filet mignon or liver, liverwurst, etc, they're going to come without even thinking about it. In class I teach the recall like Leslie Nelson's Tails You Win method. Works every time in the real world! Cannot stress enough, this is the emergency one. Not the informal recall - Like m'ere for it's not an emergency, just need to see your face. No need to come directly to me, just want to know where you are. Emergency recall is only practiced 3x/day with very high level treats - Dog's name, Come 1time only! If they don't come you run in the opposite direction or fall down and throw a temper tantrum - something they don't expect. Can say puppy, puppy, puppy, get down on their level, etc - as long as you only call the dog's name and use the emergency word once. In class, when we practice, the owner gives the leash to the instructor while the owner grabs an extremely high level treat - something the dogs don't usually get - chicken, liver, burger, chicken nugget, the instructor distracts the dog with a toy, the owner walks to the other side of the room backside to the dog (i.e. - walks away with confidence) always away from the door to leave the building, the instructor points to the owner. Owner says dog's name, Come! In a high pitched voice. Instructor stands up, removes the toy, becomes boring as soon as the owner says the dog's name. If the dog doesn't come on the first time they call the dog, the owner comes up to the dog, shows the dog and says to the dog - look what you could've had, too bad (the dog cannot have even a nibble). The owner goes to another dog in the Class they think they can handle (that dog's owner might have to go with them) - would you like to be my new puppy? OMG, such a good pup (all go out of sight of the dog that wouldn't come and the instructor for 3 seconds), then, the owner still making a fuss over the new pup, escorts them back to the start point of the new dog and gives that new dog back to their owner. Still ignoring their dog, go back to the original place they called their dog from, instructor still just holding the leash, instructor points again. Owner says Dog's name, Come! Most dogs do a B-line right for the owner so the instructor must release the leash - Never want the dog to get jerked when the owner calls the dog and the dog comes directly to the owner. You also Never want the dog to feel bad about coming to the owner, so even when practicing a stay or a wait, if the dog comes to the owner rather than staying or waiting, there's no deep sigh or oh brother, etc. Just go back to where the dog started, reset them, leave the dog on the foot furthest from the dog - extra cue to the dog, you're not moving, then just go half the distance before calling them. You also don't want to call the dog to you and every single time the leash gets put on, they leave the park, fun over. You might call the dog to you, they come flying to you, high level treat, then release with your release word (hopefully a word other than ok and other than praise) and a go play!

    Hi rachel. I dont know what the reason is for my 1 year old male dog to be whining troughout the day. He can whine constantly Even though he has food and Water, he has just been out for a good Walk and he gets alot of attention and play time. Im just not understanding what the reason is. It does not stop. And it seems like he wanted to go outside Even though he dont need to pee at all. Is this possibly because he has come in the age that he is starting to smell the female dogs. I really dont know how to Get him to stop. If he whines i dont let him out until he stops, so i dont think it is whining just to Get his way.
