    • @spiritmatrix2004

      Also, why would you want to travel aimlessly everywhere without stopping? You can 'fill up on wind energy, watergens, mini wind turbines, and fuel generators as well as the solar, you could also harness wave energy and even human energy, or maybe add fuel cell to the mix, but kites alone could power your needs.

      All what you listed I never had any problems with!
      Battery will get cheaper in the future to around the same cost as a new engine in a trawler
      Photovoltaik Panels (Not solar panels) will get more efficient at a lower cost in the future.
      Photovoltaik Panels are in a standard size so every Electric technician can replace them
      6 knot currents I never encountered, but even when you do just speed up a bit

    How about going into the power use for a trip, give stats, like how far you traveled and how often the generator kicked in.
    I know that the software could easily cope, and batteries have already proved that they don't degrade in electric cars, what about the implementation of the technology?
    What I am interested in is real world energy usage, especially in conditions like you had, to see if this vessel would really work for me.

If the generator is a efficient one, this might be quite nice and economical boat even for longer trips and a unparalleled one for living etc.. Of course it is very expensive so payback time might be more than this boats useful life time :) Now add some plugs and hooks for extra panels to catch evening/morning sun, or to use while not moving over the nets or in any other free area and maybe use that heat from electric/gasoline motor to preheat water/floors etc.. for colder places (or is it already?). Also add a tesla semi battery and a hydrogen maker for longer stays (when there are extra energy) 🤔 I wonder how the hydrogen generating "energy observer" world tour thing is performing..

      @Daver G its no different than milage claims for new cars. Even if their boat could exist perpetually in ideal solar conditions, it's still an unacceptable proposition for a boat of that size with such limited performance just to maintain self sufficiency. A better design choice would be to add an actual sail so that the boat can be maneuvered adequately to deal with sea conditions. Wind would be the main power source leaving direct solar power to move the boat on windless days and the batteries as backup when there's no sun.

What most do not realize is that that generator is used quite alot. On there Trans-Atlantic crossing they had to run it every 3 yours and burned about 1500 Gallons of the 1600 gallons of diesel on board. This is far less than what a standard motor yacht will consume but WAY more than what a Sailboat requires for the same crossing, as they usually have 150-300 gallons on board and MAY consume 2/3 of that if they don't get any wind, especially in the doldrums.

    A first glance, and with most new technology apps being expensive, I live where this is heading. To point, while yes, this is for the "rich", these can also be great experimental vehicles to test more efficient solar panel technology.
    Because, as we all know, solar has great potential for everyone, and has its place in the "energy" market, but still needs to be much more cost and energy efficient to really be worth it.
    As solar/batter/generator efficiency increase, it will trickle down to the rest of us. Just like cell phones.

      The Silent-64 was built in 2016. She sailed from Spain via Barbados to Florida in late February 2018, some "5567 nautical miles," and is presently in the Bahamas. A mere 400 gallons of fuel was burned, running the generator as needed, during the Atlantic ocean crossing. www.selectyachts.com/blog/silent-yachts-making-noise-obsolete

      Could you cross the ocean entirely on solar/battery and never use the generator if you kept your speed at 5 knots? I'm a wannabe sailor, but I would much rather have a fully electric yacht like this I could live on board and never have to fuel (although having that backup generator is a lifesaver). I would even make sure my tender has an electric motor. That being said, this rig costs just under $2mm so I won't be buying one anytime soon unfortunately! But I LOVE it.

  • @davidmwood560
    @davidmwood560 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know about this make of boat; but there's much to be said for electric power. It's a common assumption that sunlight is needed for solar panels to work. This is not the case, all that's needed is light; so even on an overcast day, the solar panels work, just less efficiently. The big question is; can you find room for a big enough battery bank to provide the required power to the motors and ancillaries (lighting, cooking, fridges, freezers etc.). The thinking currently is that sodium/ion batteries may be the way forward. These can produce all the necessary power for longer periods, but they are a bit heavier than the lithium variety.
    Research is ongoing into the development of underwater cone propellers that spin when the vessel is in motion and run a generatir to trickle-charge batteries ~ even large ones. Then, when at anchor or berthed, a spiral wind turbine could do the same job. Get this right and you could have a boat capable of being entirely fuel-free and capable of sustaining a reasonable cruising speed constantly; and still developing power at night when anchored. The only thing that would inhibit this performance would be the absolute absence of wind. So, not perpetual motiin; but close - very close. I've done it with a Motorhome, but a boat requires a substantially greater power-bank.

  • @L.M1792
    @L.M1792 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great.
    The trickle down theory will now surely begin to come into effect with smaller boat sellers and buyers taking this option instead of the poisonous diesel and petrol options.
    Short range ferry crossings will do well to adopt this possibility, Calais to Dover or Rotterdam to Hull even.
    With an added small tank of hydrogen (generated by turbine power)
    these new inclusions into the infrastructure of travel do indeed look set to change the economies of our planet for good.
    Kind regards
    LM

    The problem with this concept is that it operates at such a slow speed. 4.5 - 5 knots is quite slow for a large sailboat and a somewhat faster 7 knots, you can only go 3-4 hours before the generator needs to kick in. So, realistically, you need to the generator when you actually want to make some progress getting somewhere, say over 20 miles. Virtually all of the footage that you see in these videos has the yacht going so fast that you'll only have two hours of cruising before you need to start burning fuel.

Does that mean you have to have to roof up and be out in the open to drive it? So someone has to hang out in front of the steering wheel all the time while moving? Or does it have some kind of automated navigational system? Great boat there. Is there a possibility, to produce (and sell) surplusses of electricity into the grid, when docking? I mean, if your yacht does have this capacity, it would be wise to utilize it fully. Especially in ports, located in countries with less developed responsibility to their nature, and/or not much power to spare. Yachts could suddenly start to be affordable, when possible income from them is not only made by chartering, and if they can be used as a beautifull houseboat (when not sailing far, or even across the globe).

    • @gregb7353

      The batteries won't go "bad", they just hold less energy when fully charged. If you don't discharge the bank below 20% and don't change them above 80% they will last the lifetime of the boat if you are using it daily. If you flog the batteries it might last two years even if you do it every day. Even then, you just get 3 hours of full runtime Vs. 4 hours. Basically you will have to work very hard to actually get the batteries in bad enough shape that you need to replace them.

    Hi everyone. Great yacht you have there. If i may ask, does anyone know, if some similar ship, only less luxurious exists, ment for energy harvesting and used for seling the harvested (solar, and possibly wind and wavemovement) power back to the local grid? I mean, it might be interesting nomad house, or even a money generator, if the ship can produce power, and also be rented as kinda houseboat (not to mention being chartered in summer as a yacht). That kind of utilitarity could make this "luxury yacht" hell of a lot more affordable for the hundred thousands and milions of simple Joes (like myself), who dream about a yacht, but know, they will probably never earn enough, to even RUN the boat, not to mention buing it. Electric (i.e. no fuel needed) motor plus more possibilities of income from HAVING that ship, might (and for me probably would) turn the tables...
