Sweetie Belle was probably exceptionally hard-headed in this episode because her green helmet momentarily glitched and fused with Apple Bloom's blue helmet.
This one is more frustrating cause the idea does work, but they just had to shove those conflict balls a bit too deeply down the adults throats. If they had toned down those three it could have worked well enough.
Or better yet had Sweetie Belle gone with Applejack, Apple Bloom with Rainbow Dash, and Scootaloo with Rarity, we could've avoided this plot altogether.

The CMCs were really cute with their enthusiasm about the different categories. Just look at Sweetie Belle at 1:31. That's adorable! The sin is that the adults' behavior was so off-putting that I forgot about that cute detail entirely until now.
To be honest this isn't really one of my favorite CMC episodes, i especially didn't like how AJ,RD and Rarity acted either they mostly only focused on what they wanted in building a cart instead of listening to the CMC's, but Derby Racers became one of my favorite mlp songs and Cheerilee looked gorgeous in that cheerleader outfit!
You could say the same for most of Spike episodes. It just seems that Hasbro hated Spike and just kept giving him bad-writted episodes most of the time. I know he was a baby dragon and all, but he matured enough to learned from his mistakes.
On the contrary the fact that they don't listen to them is one of the things I actually *like* about this episode lol. I will admit that with everything the older sisters have been through and the lessons they've learned up to this point, it doesn't make since for them to not listen to them and is out of character for them to only care about what they want for themselves. I will say RD not listening to Scootaloo DOES at least fit Rainbow Dash's egotistical personality though; especially because she wanted to win the race because of wanting to make up for when she was a filly herself.

Agree with you about it being a stupid episode, especially since it's S6. Maybe if it were a S1 episode and more consistent and actually made sense it could've been a great episode. I definitely saw potential in it the first time watching

The fact that they made it seem like the CMC didn't actually say anything by having them say "it can be harder to speak up to older ponies" is just stupid. The lesson may have hit a bit more of they'd said "we did! You ignored us so we gave up!" Because then it'd be a lesson about listening to others and not "speaking up"
Has no one mentioned the mystery colt thats with derpy??? As far as I know I’ve never seen him before this episode or after, and hes not a generic bg pony either? He has a unique main and tail style as well as a unique cutie mark (which seems to be a starburst or possibly even a popped bubble)
I actually like this episode and i not suprise of how the CMC and their sister behave this way. The CMC already got their cutie mark, so i kind off not mad that much when they want to go off from their talent like in season 1 but their sister behave how we would say to the CMC how their should get their cutie mark. So, i can see the parell of this epsiode with the past
I can say the episode is a controversial episode for me, I don’t know how could someone say this episode equal bad like Applelosa Most Wanted which both episodes are not even close comparision level of bad; not as bad as when that reviewer start ranting every Starlight episodes in his worst list. Tell the truth, none of the episode from Season 6 & 7 went into my worst list.
Having grown up and faced ageism and not being taken seriously (as a child and teenager) this episode really stung. It was a real backhanded slap when they tried to force the “you should have spoken up” message when that’s exactly what the CMC did. It’s almost as if the writers THEMSELVES weren’t paying attention to the CMC.
This episode needs more sins starting with: "This episode exists," and should be awarded 100 sins for that single offense let alone the rest you came up with. This episode is that bad in my opinion.
2 10-second penalties for Rainbow for causing contacts with other drivers (in the song), disqualification for Applejack for being too slow, black flag for Rarity for causing obstruction :P Actually Rara's big swan could be a nice safety car (pace car) in this sense.
