I love how he saw that Moana was doing very good and he went: "that's it, we need more Moana" instead of thinking: "what was it that made Moana so good and how can we make more movies as good as it was?" It's literally so lazy
When I worked in animation, that was legit how the producers thought. They'd be like "Oh, Frozen was a hit, let's make an ice princess movie because the people are into that now!" Just the most superficial reasons. I never understood it. The last time that producer mindset benefitted us though is when Spiderverse droppes and now they all say "People want stylized movies!" And like.... You're still wrong but at least this time it let us to artistic expression we have bee craving for years 😂
@@Pleurigloss I'd definitely say not mediocre since the Renaissance was truly a massive success and a global influence, but the way they handle situations after their best times is truly peak mediocrity
This is more sad and desperate than the "Dark Age" of Disney between 1970-1988 when the company was attempting and flopping hard after the creator Walt Disney died
@@samtbenjamin I agree, even though they were releasing fewer movies during that time frame than today at least a lot of those movies were new, original ideas (Winnie the Pooh being a partial exception since it included shorts made in the 60s) even if some of them were pretty subpar by their standards at the time. Nowadays it seems like they've entered a doom loop where their original movies started sucking so now they're going to rely even more on sequels which never live up to the originals, as Ralph Breaks The Internet and Frozen 2 demonstrate. Encanto is looking more and more like a lucky fluke, a "miracle" if you will.
@@samtbenjamin Agreed. I find the films that came out during Disney's 1st "Dark Age" still being a notch above what they've been churning out since 2020. Frozen 2 was the last great creation of the so-called Disney 'Renaissance'.
@samtbenjamin Yes!! I've seen the animation community here on TH-cam create really impressive storyboards to songs from musicals ( Six, Dear Evan Hanson, Jekyll and Hyde.) I think if disney wants to save themselves they need to start dipping their toes into new ideas.
They need to go head and give Moana a man idk what they so scared of no one has an issue with the princesses in movies having a prince we have an issue when they are supposed to just always be the savior let the girls be an equal and still have a prince, kinda like little mermaid live action showed
@@Blackgirltries while i agree that it would be great to see a classic Disney couple again. Moana doesn't really need to have a boyfriend in the sequel, her story wasn't about romance and i doubt that giving her a romantic partner would help the sequel, unless they do an EXELENT job at developing the couple. Moana is one of those stories that really doesn't need romance.
i saw online that bob is stepping down at the end of 2026, which is ridiculous because it seems like he’s taking the whole company down with him & then just leaving them dry in a couple of years. but, hopefully, when he does, someone better replaces him. how disappointing this era has been.
The company needs to oust him. I highly doubt any of the big wigs are making money from what he's been doing. What's the point of keeping him around at this point?
Right It’s such an good movie and as much as I would love to see Moana character grow like how they did with Elsa and Anna I don’t think it’s gonna be as good telling from the Disney films now😭
@@imanipastel3181 I'm sorry but Frozen 2 was mid. Like the part before they went inside the forest was fine, but when the finally went inside, it came crashing down. Show Yourself and The Next Right Thing are AMAZINGLY beautiful songs though
Honeslty kinda sad that we're witnessing the slow demise of disney. Like what's so bad about creating new movies (THAT ARE ACTUALLY GOOD) and refreshing characters?
And with that we should think about the meaning of this; What will happen if in the future, Walt Disney company shuts down and declares bankruptcy? What will that mean for the world, that another studio will take it’s place? That the animated world will be free of the “tyrants”? I think many people don’t stop to think about that because they only want to se a “tyrant” fall and then celebrate without thinking about tomorrow.
All of that is going to change. I'm not going to let Disney be this way for much long. I'm going to get a job at Disney as a 2-d artist and create new animated masterpieces with refreshing characters. Just you wait and see! Disney's demise will NOT be permanent!
@marshalmarrs3269 ABSOLUTELY! You think I'm joking about this? Well, I'm NOT! I'm dead set on helping Disney get back on its feet and making new and improved 2-d animated movies.
@marshalmarrs3269 🙄Uh, no. Absolutely NOT! Disney is a family entertainment company. That means only family-friendly or kid-friendly films are allowed to be made at Disney. Besides, Walt himself wouldn't like it if that ever happened. So NO R-rated movies ALLOWED!!!
That’s the problem when the new people in charge don’t look at history and whatever old leaders have decided, tought etc. They just wanna do what they wanna do, if they think it benefits them.
Sequels & reboots can & will turn a profit; but that’s exactly the point, they’re so forgettable. It’s like the fast food of film- good while you’re watching, but completely disregardable when you’ve finished it.
@@tacocat9844 Hell the only reason I remember it (sometimes) is because of my massive hatred for Lin Manuel Miranda, and the fact that he was IN that movie. Bro is an embarrassment. I never understood his popularity.
I don't think many people realize things went downhill after that awful Wreck-it Ralph sequel. Almost everything that Walt Disney Animation has put out in recent years is either mediocre or straight up bad. We are not entering a new Dark Age, it already started years ago. I would say that Encanto is the only film that has any dimension. As a fan of their golden days, I really wanted to believe in a revival, but the future isn't looking so bright...
@bananarama1425 i'm still confused about toy story. i saw toy story 3 and it felt like the end. it was emotional. even my dad was crying in that one and he never cries in movies. it felt complete and beautiful. a love letter to over a decade of a wonderful story. and then toy story 4 just seemed to pop up out of nowhere. to me, that was the beginning of the end. because we'd already said goodbye to toy story. we'd had our beautiful ending. why did they have to go and drag it out even more? it felt...like we'd been cheated as an audience. like the third one felt so final and was so emotional. it felt like we'd said goodbye. then here they come popping back in with yet another one no one asked for. to me, that was the start of the downfall.
@bananarama1425 from the frozen 2 documentary i think it's both creating sequels without a clear purpose and crunching production to fit a marketable time, which is why I'm dreading moana 2
Aladdin King of Thieves is lowkey such a good straight to vhs sequel. Why? The Genie is again played by Robin Williams and has the funniest one-liners. Aladdin and Jasmin finally get married. Aladdin finds his dad and realizes he is not an orphan after all, it is very touching. Far more entertaining than Wish lol. Even Simbas Pride is another great straight to vhs sequel. Disney really doesn't make them like they used to.
omg so my kid self wasnt crazy for liking this movie cause i’d been nervous to rewatch as i have little faith in these sequels. I only rlly rewatch cinderella 3 ofc and occasionally the little mermaid 3 cause it’s just kinda fun. i also really used to like simba’s pride as a kid tho i didn’t like to say it because i didnt wanna let the adults know i liked romance 💀 but yeah i wouldn’t say just yet that disney doesn’t make sequels like they used to. in the middle of many the direct to video sequels they made, very few are known to be good and have rewatchability and those are the once-in-a-blue-moon releases. most of these new sequels’ quality is on par with the average direct to video release. i’m still hoping that all these crappy sequels means that we have yet to reach our “blue moon” but at this rate i can’t be sure we’ll ever make it. i genuinely cannot excuse these live action remakes though. just taking the magic outta beloved titles for absolutely no good reason.
It’s sad because Disney has access to the most talented animators and artists in the world, they could be putting out groundbreaking movies every year. And yet because of corporate cowardice we get mediocre movies that, when you look behind the scenes, often had a lot more going for them.

i still stand that the 3 pixar disney plus releases (luca, turning red, and soul) are unique films that break away from the formula. but the fact that whey were released straight to streaming really ruined any kind of cultural impact they could have had :((
I feel these three being sent directly to Disney + reflects the lack of respect Disney has for Pixar. Soul,I let it pass because COVID;but Luca and Turning Red should have had a theatrical release, there is no excuses, especially because Encanto was on theaters
I still feel like turning red is SUCH a good film, it's the only disney animated movie released in the last ~7 years that I've returned to for rewatches. Legit wish it could've been more of a mainstream success than it was, ppl loved it but it wasn't a Phenomenon the way that a movie like Moana had been.
That's exactly why I went to see Turning Red in theaters last weekend. I was so excited for that movie since the first trailer. My heart broke when it was sent straight to Disney + instead. Still, I watched it with my sis when it finally hit streaming, but I'll always be upset it wasn't given the full chance it needed.
Please don’t say that out loud. It might come true! We’re entering the Straight to DVD Sequel age! But it’s longer because between this and the dang Live Action remakes, the IP is being updated and people who don’t know anything about this, because why would they, they got lives, just goes to them because it’s entertainment.
im having a hard time wondering what else they can do with moana. its not like there is any mysteries like elsa's powers, so.... what now? if they actually annonce another unneeded sequel, like the supposed encanto 2, i might lose my mind
i think encanto would actually be aided by a tv series, since theres so many characters with tons of room for exploration, but i have no clue what the plot could be for a film. you could make tons and tons of short plots abt family antics, but not a long movie plot
I think they can do something interesting exploring polynesian mythology; the problem is more about if they care enough to put the creativity and effort needed to do it justice
@@Mars-dw2zcmost likely to be a movie in the style of Cinderella 2 where the characters remember some stories as a framing device. Is a very silly type of narrative but I think they would choose it

The Disney company died with Roy E. Disney's departure. He was the one who kept Michael Eisner in check during the 80's and 90's by keeping Walt's ideals alive.
I think you’re right, he seemed to be the one who made sure we would get a Renaissance when we did. Now it seems like there’s no one there willing to keep that creative flame alive.
As a lifelong Disney fan and someone that used to work for Disney in multiple capacities: thank you for this. I completely agree! The blatant bottom-line cash grab is evident in the Parks division as well. It's really frustrating and sad.

I think its safe to say that we're entering a new dark era for disney, being a mix of the bronze era and the straight to dvd sequels (or in this case remakes and unnecesary sequels) fever from right after the renaissance, i hope they realize quantity ≠ quality because if not, they'll keep losing money.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire was also slated to have a sequel TV series that got turned into a movie and look how that turned out. But tbh, I'd much rather have a Moana sequel than that pointless live-action remake.
The live action remake is still slated to come out, so they're both happening lol. Just like they vaguely announced the Frozen live action is in the works some months ago and we also have Frozen 3 coming.
Well that’s what you get when you hire for DEI requirements instead of for actual talent, skill, or actual ability. You get woke stories and poor quality.
@@meganjaime7728 what's woke got to do with it? Other studios managed to make movies that are much more "woke" but are actually great (Nimona, Arcane, etc.) Disney is cowardly and money-hungry, that's what's causing this streak of bad products.
You can sum up Bob Iger's "leadership style" with this quote from him: "We are not obligated to make art, we art not obligated to make history, we are obligated to make money." That proves hes a bad businessman because he doesnt even understand his own product. Edit: Michael Eisner said the words, Bob Iger has been documented as using them in discussions of his leadership of Disney
The difference is when Eisner had crowds of people who screamed at him to stop, he actually stopped. Because he knew if the crowd was angry, no money would come from it. And it didn't have to be a large crowd. Iger and Chapek (both from the same thought school) have decided they need X amount of people to complain before they act on something and change it. They want as much money as possible and hatewatching is still watching. They don't care. They want your money. Any publicity is money to them. Eisner is still a chump. Eisner still sucks. Eisner still knew that if you had at least ten people grumbling, that represented enough people to indicate he should do something before ten became ten thousand. Iger and Chapek know that the climate of human beings have changed. We won't do anything to stop them. We have apathy too badly and we will not actually boycott any of these creations. When it comes to the live actions, despite us as a whole finding them vapid and uninspired, we'll go see them to support the WOC actresses. While they do deserve our support because of the hate they're getting? You can do that without seeing the movie or buying the merchandise. You can give support without money. Close your wallets and if Disney sends you a survey or anything to ask why you're not buying... Tell them how unoriginal they are, how the sequels are not your Disney, and the remakes aren't "magical". That's the only way to get them to change.
That’s not the full quote. Eisner actually said: “We have no obligation to make art. We have no obligation to make history. We have no obligation to make a statement. But to make money, it is often important to make history, to make art, or to make some significant statement. We must always make entertaining movies, and, if we make entertaining movies, at times, we will reliably make history, art, a statement or all three. We cannot expect numerous hits, but if every film has an original and imaginative concept, then we can be confident that something will break through.” There’s plenty to criticise Michael Eisner for, but I’d say the the current Disney ethos - making money irrespective of quality - it pretty antithetical to Eisner’s philosophy as expressed above.
I was listening to the radio and heard the hosts talking about how they were excited for "the live action Moana, Moana 2, Frozen 3, Toy Story 5, and Inside Out 2." Not a single unique work. We truly live in a dystopia.
The sad thing is - all though people are dissapointed by the movies, there are still enough parents with children who see names such as 'Moana 2', 'frozen 2', 'live action Alladin' and think: "Oh, my children liked those movies, lets go to there", or the children themselves will beg to go to the movies because they recognize characters. Even if it isnt turning huge profit, or are critical dissasters, Disney has the money to take the fall. And by doing this, they dont have to put a lot of money into creative teams and animation. It sucks and i hate it!
My mom went to see the live action Aladdin because she wanted to relive the glory days of watching the original in theaters, so textbook nostalgia case. God, I wish I could’ve also seen the original in theaters. 😭
Another big trend I’ve noticed is how afraid of “showtunes” Disney has become. The music is now very pop-y and more mainstream rather than suiting a character or story. And that lack of rich music has been a huge contributor to why the movies feel so empty. The songs aren’t bad, they just don’t have the same soul that they used to. And deprioritizing one of the sensory aspects of a movie really makes it feel cheap or like tv episodes. You just can’t connect or feel invested in quite the same way. More showtunes/ music with heart please!
Alan Menken and Howard Ashman (responsible for the scores of Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, etc.) were classical Broadway songwriters/playwrights and understood what they were writing for- animated Broadway musicals. When the emotion is too much to speak, you dance, and when the emotion is too big for dance, you sing, and that was the philosophy of Disney's renaissance scores written by Menken and Ashman. To give Lin Manuel Miranda credit, he also knows what he's writing- pop music for cash grabs. It doesn't have to be thoughtful, lyrically engaging, or soulful- just catchy enough to sell and get the kids singing it.
Fun(?) fact: every other era of disney has been a “dark” era: The wartime era The bronze/dark age The post-renaissance And the era that we’re in right now.
But it's fun to point out that Hollywood in general is lacking in creativity this times. Just in 2024 we will have more sequels than originals from the big studios (Beetlejuice 2, Gladiator 2, Joker 2, Moana 2, Inside Out 2, Quiet Place 3, The Lion King 2 live action...)
Think it’s mostly because this is a “dark era” that is overwhelmingly corporate. In the past, you could tell there was some effort, and when a good idea came it was attempted. Compare to now where the ONLY focus is profit, and higher ups are shutting down ideas that are creatively innovative
@@book-hoarder5664 Fr the other dark eras actually have a lot of my favorite disney movies (especially the Bronze Age) but this one kinda just sucks. Disney can’t just stick to the same formula forever and hope it works. I still have hope for their future movies and the creative people getting held back by financial decisions.
I think Disney should go into a sort of “dark age.” A lot of the capitalistic intentions of executives at Disney have caused their modern movies to seem too “pop like” and “quirky” making them seem almost cheap because of it. They should go back to making movies similar to the hunchback of norte dame with more mature themes but still watchable for all ages.
I agree! Unfortunately I don’t the think that will happen until Bob leaves the company since he cancelled the hunchback live action remake bc he “didn’t like the story of the original”
Capitalism? what the stupid are you talking about. They tried to manipulate and lecture the audience…. not serve them. They received massive amounts of leftists ESG money, allowing them to ignore capitalism, and promote their political agenda and societal manipulation. Its 180 degrees opposite of capitalism. It couldnt be farther apart from capitalism.
I remember watching Frozen 2 making off documentary on Disney+ and seeing how those creative people had to tone down their great, sometimes risky, ideas and basically change the whole film in less then half of year, because early screenings audience had some problems... it's heartbreaking, but also what I believe to be root cause of the boring Disney problem
the way they wanted that movie to be more incisive about colonialism and how horrible the arendelle kingdom treated the northuldra but disney just didnt let them explore that aspect more bc "children were bored in the test screenings" like arent your movies meant to the whole family? why youre dumbing down things just to some ipad obssesed gen alpha kids who arent being raised on having actual media literacy would understand
@@mayruuhMaybe they thought it would be too similar to Pocahontas perhaps? Though maybe 24 years later they could’ve come up with something more nuanced than that movie if given the chance. In any case, it seems like Disney’s forgotten how to make movies that appeal to the whole family, both kids AND adults, and are focusing on just the kids instead. Bob Chapek’s comments about animation are especially telling of the company’s mindset today.
they chase away their talented animators (qualitly) because they were white… and hired a bunch (quantity) of activists. So…. they have no choice but quantity over quality now.
I was surprised when I found out about the sequel. Especially since ppl were talking about a live action version being in the works. I'm just so sick of the sequels and remakes of movies. People are so uninspired now 😫😫
I’m so confused why Bob Iger looked at Moana 2 and said “yes let’s do that and base the decision off of streams” after just a couple months ago he said he realizes that Disney has been doing too much and lost focus and will be shifting to focusing on story instead of putting more out… And then Moana 2 happens lol. I know “money” is an easy answer here but I’d love to know a deeper reason when the company I’m sure knows most people are upset with them.
Because upsetting people is actually one way of doing marketing. He's just keeping their names out there with lies and disappointment. Who would even know that Moana 2 is coming if it wasn't for the crap marketing and fake promises and critics coming out to talk about it? Not me. He will keep doing shit because people like to eat shit and will keep throwing money on them. Until revenue actually takes a dip they will keep doing what they do and make the money flow with low cheap effort. That's late stage capitalism and we're all in to watch that shit unless people forget Disney and actually look up to brilliant animated movies that are coming out every year and aren't just some crap Disney shits out of the gutter.
The problem is that animated movies take years to be made, whatever comes out this year has already been in production for a long while. It's a shame because maybe they learned their lesson, that making unoriginal slop won't attract audiences, but we won't see a change for some time
I had no idea Walt Disney himself said that he never wanted any of his movies to have sequels or become “franchises.” I feel even worse about all these sequels and remakes that are coming out now knowing that Disney’s own founder wouldn’t want this… 😣
i mean, i think it's a call to support studios who are willing to do something different with the medium, like sony with spiderverse or netflix with mitchell vs the machines and nimona
@@Feliciathedoll meh, I disagree. The art of animation may seem dead because of Disney. But there’s also some incredible works of art produced recently in the animation domain, such as Puss in Boots 2 and the Spiderverse films. There are also so many Indy artists out there working hard to get noticed, working on small budgets and producing masterpieces. If we get pessimistic, we give up, and allow greed to take over art. Mainstream animation might suck rn, but there’s so much more out there.
One of the reasons why I like your channel is that you are critical of Disney without blaming everything on feminism, the LGBT community or other progressive movements. Something rare to find on this platform
Exactly. You have to be very unhappy to point to any of these things as the source of their downgrade. It's time for diverse stories but most importantly well done diverse stories.
Yes, BUT just replacing old, well known characters with more diverse actors is not true diversity either. There are thousand of fairytales and stories across all of Africa for example. Why not make movie about those? I would totally watch something like that. Something ACTUALLY diverse and new.
Wholeheartedly agreed. The whole "go woke, go broke" narrative from conservatives is just annoying and blatantly wrong. Just look at Barbie it made over a billion and people still say "wokeness" ruins movies - if anything corporate greed and business executive micromanaging ruins movies not inclusiveness
@@HK23783 yeah, the way disney does it just seems like putting black actors on the chopping block for the sake of generating headlines. they get all the free marketing of having "black xyz" then turn a blind eye to the racism the actors suffer. then actual criticisms of the movies are drowned out by ppl going "buhh woke brainwashing"
Them making a live action remake and an animated sequel of Moana around the same time truly shows how little they actually care about telling a story and only care about money
Adding to the whole 'workload of the employees' question: Moana 2 is made in Vancouver, a studio branch that Disney just opened about 3 years ago. They stated they would only outsource TV work there when US animation workers voiced their concern about major flagship projects potentially going to the cheaper location, too. So, not only do a lot of US workers feel replaced and betrayed by this, I would also guess that not all workers in Vancouver knew about this change when being hired. Traditionally TV contracts pay way less than big feature animations, so I am really worried that they been underpaying a lot of their employees through this.
I really admire Walt Disney for putting creativity and innovation ahead of making money. Like you said, he was often in debt and put any profits back into new creations and projects... and he didn't live extravagantly. He didn't actually enjoy the business side of things and he wasn't driven by a desire for personal wealth. It really makes me sad to see how the Disney company has become the opposite of what Walt stood for - basically synonymous with greed and lack of originality. There's no heart or risk-taking, as you pointed out. We need another great storyteller with *ideas* and genuine enthusiasm for the work, like Walt Disney or Howard Ashman. Thank you for making this well-researched video - I feel like so many have forgotten Walt's stance against sequels etc. I hope this reminds people of what Disney used to be, and could be again. The audience needs to demand better quality and more of a focus on *story* and *art*, and stop supporting the inferior "products" they're pumping out. Maybe if they keep losing money, they'll become desperate enough to start taking risks again?
This feels like a more high-profile repeat of the VHS sequel era. The only difference is that the films are being placed in theaters this time. Hearing everything Walt went through just to keep his studio alive is commendable. It's a miracle all his risks paid off... but now I'm sure his frozen head is spinning around 24/7.
I remember being in high school when they announced the cancellation of “Newt” and had a feeling something was up because Pixar had never done anything like that before. After that it was live action remakes, sequels, Marvel, and Star Wars. There were a few gems here and there like Big Hero 6 but they’ve been on the decline for a while.
Part of the problem as well is the lack of marketing with projects they have decided are not going to "make it" luca, strange worlds and elemental we're all released with little to no marketing. And they are films with interesting premises.
Even Encanto had no marketing. I only got ads about the movie the week it was scheduled to drop in theaters. The ads were also only like 30 seconds long.
I'll be real with you, Strange World is terrible. I give every Disney movie a fair chance because animation deserves it even more so. It's yet another Journey to the Center of the Earth story with absolutely no charm or heart. The twist is mildly interesting but all I did was sit there the entire time and go "When you did Atlantis you failed because of an overbloated but interesting cast." Which let's be honest. Think of Atlantis. If you can't remember names, you remember their personalities and their character designs. Strange World doesn't even have that but they have a cute gooey mascot. They still have too many characters I can't keep track of but at least in Atlantis, I wanted more. In here, I'm irritated by the presence of these characters who roll in out of nowhere and go "MEMBA ME? SO WE GONNA DO THIS LOL YEAH YOUR DAD GOT LOST DOWN HERE HOPE YOU DON'T HAVE TRAUMA!" And it becomes a family affair which is the only tolerable part of the storyline. The problem is we go back and forth on potential resolutions to family drama and because the other half is this uninteresting expedition cast and we have to actually move the plot along, there's no sign of potentially resolving any family differences or drama. BUT THE MOM IS COOL THOUGH. It's a 2/5. It's not even made for children in mind, it's absolutely for middle schoolers and I don't mean that for the queer topics because it's very much blink and you miss it. It's very shallow and barely there. You'd forget it. Nah that's the science which while cool and very much grounded in real life, it may not feel fun for everyone watching because the science gets absolutely beaten into you in a few scenes. And once you see some of the more fun science things, it does spoil the movie. As someone who really doesn't like Atlantis, watch Atlantis instead.
I think I am the only person who actually enjoyed Strange World haha. Granted, the characters and storyline were forgettable. (I actually had completely forgotten about the gooey thing! Which is not a good sign) But the world-building was absolutely gorgeous. As soon as I saw it I realised [spoiler] and my fiancé and I had fun pointing out all the ways the different things were [spoiler] You just know they had some amazing concept art. I'm an artist though, so that is a massive draw for me. It deserved much better storytelling and characters. The heart of the movie was the world itself. But you can't make a hit movie on that alone
The problem with the Disney converting their TV show attempts to movies is that they have already done this before. With movies such as Belle's Magical World, Atlantis 2, and Tarzan and Jane, show that doing this is not really the best decision
I think it would be best if Disney made another, new, Disney princess film based on a fairytale. They haven't really done that since Tangled (2010), unless you count Frozen (2013). That's over ten years ago. There's 12 Dancing Princesses, The Wild/Six Swans, Princess and the Pea, Rumpelstiltskin, Thumbelina, little Rosette... Also, there's Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks, Hansel and Gretl and Tom Thumb, but I don't know if those would make great musical movies.
Honestly I think red riding hood and Goldilocks have potential. Maybe for Goldilocks they could have it that she stumbles across and family who were cursed and turned into bears and she tries to break the curse. IDK, that's just what I thought
they could also do fairy tales from cultures other than just western ones. there are literally countless tales from all over the world they could take inspiration from and it could be really neat to see them adapt a more obscure fairy tale and introduce it to the public but it's like they don't even bother to look beyond the already famous ones 😪
I AGREE WITH LITERALLY EVERYTHING YOU SAID!! Disney used to make amazing films where they REALLY CARED ABOUT THEY STORY!! Now they are basically just wanting and then getting as much cash as when someone Robs a bank!! Wish was fine. But you can tell they did NOT care about the story that much! Literally, Asha is Rapunzel, Anna, Moana and Raya all mixed together to make ANOTHER ADORKABLE CHARACTER!!!!!
The story is never the damn issue. Any writer can pitch anything to the CEOs of Disney, and they can tear it to pieces in order to be marketable. Please stop blaming the writers.
I'm a writer, and I'm very passionate about my work. Once I get a job at Disney, I'll change things for the better as a writer/2-d artist! Disney will make amazing films again, I'll make sure that that happens!✊🏻
And the family in WISH is clearly deeply inspired by the seven dwarfs ... the movie could have been successful if they made the right decisions and with fresh ideas and not reusing what's already been done before.
Return of Jafar was subpar, but the series that spun off from it and the final film (which felt more like an actual sequel while also being a proper series finale), were pretty solid. I don't have any way of knowing for sure, but there seemed to be alot of passion and heart that went into creating them even if they were operating on a very limited budget (and it showing). One of the few examples of them actually doing a good job expanding on the characters personalities in a way that seemed consistent with who they were in the first film (only downside being Dan Castallaneta replacing Robin Williams for the series, but the animation picked up alot of the slack and made it less of a problem IMO).
the animated spin off tv shows for disney movies like the little mermaid, aladdin, hercules, the emperor's new school, and more recently the tangled animated series, are actually pretty good bc actual passionate creators are making sure they can make sequel adventures without all the corporate meddling official sequels like wreck it ralph 2, frozen 2 and now moana 2 get. the main studio is going throught some BIG issues bc they cant make a good movie anymore bc the company keeps rushing them and interfering with stories which initially had good ideas (like wish with the starboy and asha being a couple, alongside the villain couple and a few more ideas that if they actually had time to mature them more would turn up to be great)
I wish we would talk more about how Disney exploits their workers. It’s crazy that so many peoples dreams come from Disney and they can’t even treat their workers like humans. From Disneyland/world to the animators and actors and etc etc, anyone under the company and across the board, has been overworked and underpaid. We love our magic making- story telling mega corporation that squeezes us for ever cent.
I’ve noticed that people are so quick to blame “wokeness” or some other culture war BS for Disney’s current issues when the REAL problem is that it’s creative leadership is simply OUT OF TOUCH. I think making up things to get mad at distracts from the real problems with the company and causes folks to overlook its major “design by committee” problem. Also a studio can make a “woke” movie that’s great. Just look at Nimona. The problem isn’t representation, it’s QUALITY.
I saw this with Ralph Breaks The Internet, but it feels like Disney is like "we don't need to try because we'll be successful no matter what" and I really hope the lack of financial success will finally shake them out of it
I hope you’ll never stop being the voice over voice for this channel. Your voice is so soothing and something that’ll always come to mind when I think of nostalgia for girlhood
Disney is just turning into Gamefreak with Pokémon. Quantity over quality, throwing at us anything, thinking that their big company names are enough to make us swallow their products
To be entirely fair, I really liked some of the newer original movies you listed (Luca, Soul, and Turning Red). They didn't feel super formulaic? The problem with those was that they were released straight to streaming with little fanfare, so they couldn't really perform well at the box office. Something similarly happened to Onward and Encanto. They had their box office run hindered by being sent to streaming right after their theatrical release. Encanto was a huge hit regardless because of the virality of its soundtrack. Also, Coco (2017) is counted as a recent-ish addition, right? I'm not disagreeing that Disney is putting corporate greed over art, that's true; but I don't want to discount the creativity and love that went into some of the recent animated films they've put out.
@@realmothchu no, I know it's Pixar; but they're the ones she specifically lists as formulaic and uninspired in the video. Which I have to disagree with. They're not as ambitious as, like, WALL-E, but they're still decent films with a lot of care that was put into them.
The problem with Onward was that literally a week into its theatrical run the world shut down because of Covid, which also forced Luca, Soul and Turning Red to go directly to streaming (as well as Raya and the Last Dragon), and they couldn't just sit on those films until the world opened back up (because we didn't know when we'd be able to get back to normal)
it sucks when creatives making animated media talk about not wanting to make sequels/spinoffs/etc when they felt it was unnecessary but once they pass, the businessman go against their ideals. the SAME thing happened when stephen hillenberg passed away with spongebob ☹️ it pains me as an artist and story teller myself
Damn, Don Bluth could be making a killing right now if he produced another film or two. I still want to see his version of Beauty & the Beast! The concept art for it is so beautiful!
My biggest gripe with the newly announced sequels is that they literally do not add anything new to the originals. Moana had an ending that resonated with finality. Frozen II had a conclusion that did not leave much left to be explored, apart from mythology and side characters that could theoretically receive stories in a spin-off form. The only sequels that I think have potential are Inside Out 2 and Zootopia 2 because both of those narratives have ideas and mythology that can be expanded upon and made into a new narrative that continues the growth of the main protagonists. A good sequel in the Disney canon CAN be done. There is a precedent from way before Frozen II. A sequel done right that often gets forgotten for some reason in the Disney canon is The Rescuers Down Under (1990), which continued the relationship between Bernard and Bianca while also raising the stakes and taking them on a journey in a new country. The side characters and villain were also well-written and the arcs and narrative felt complete by the end of the story. As part of the Disney Renaissance, it felt like it belonged with the other films, which is why its absence from discussion regarding Disney sequels is baffling to me, but that’s a different story. I wish that Disney would return to its roots with 2D animation, which is what they should have done with Wish (2023) - oh the irony - but with the lack of animators who are exceptional in that arena, I fear that this upcoming era of Disney is going to be bleak. I want to believe in their storytelling, but everything in that department seems to be pedestrian now.
even with the straight to dvd sequels we had actually good ones like cinderella 3 and aladdin and the king of thieves. i feel like those movies with a bigger animation budget and a more concisive story would be great bc they actually play with some neat concepts and explore more of the world and characters. cinderella 3 was great for fleshing out the characters more, like making cinderella be more present in her own story (unlike the previous movie which was like... too much mice chase scenes) and fight for the happy ending that her abusive stepmother stole from her, the prince has an actual personality and he's actually pretty funny, anastasia got character development, we saw how cruel lady tremaine can get... and this movie has STAKES oh my god. aladdin 3 had some issues (too much disney/pop culture references coming from the genie, jasmine basically doing nothing the entire movie), but we actually get some insight into aladdin's backstory, his father, and a good adventure searching for the hand of midas.
@@mayruuhAbsolutely agree with you on Cinderella 3. I watched it as an adult and enjoyed the hell out of it. Aladdin: King of Thieves was also one of my favs growing up. I really enjoyed the way they continued the stories as well. That's why I feel like a sequel should be made only if it truly does justice to the original.
The Rescuers was conceived as a three part movie but it ended at two due to our loss of many of the cast, Miss Bianca in particular. What COULD have been is heartbreaking because the books have a wealth of small ideas to launch to bigger ones. And to be fair, The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under are the only movies I accept from Disney as done well for sequels. While the Aladdin straight to VHS movie are fun, they are fun and nothing else. The Rescuers had a reason for them both to be there.
My faith in Disney is at an all-time low, Wish was the last straw for me. If they couldn't do right by their 100th anniversary celebration movie, then what hope is there for them in the future? It feels like they've entered a death spiral where their original movies started sucking and underperforming, causing them to rely more and more on sequels to films that worked in the past to the point that eventually the milk from these cows will run dry and then unless they manage to produce new ideas in the future that prove successful they'll be left with nothing. This is at the same time that the competition is starting to outdo them and beat them at their own game. At this rate Disney could very well become the Sears of animation, an all-powerful giant that grew fat and complacent in the face of new competition before withering away.
" a death spiral where their original movies started sucking and underperforming," what are you talking about? Encanto was an amazing film, you're all just too blinded by rage and nostalgia to appreciate it
@@kamilbidzinski475 tbf i think this is just a generalized statement- also i didn't care for encanto myself, and it was solely because of lin's music. i don't like his style at all so the fact that so much of the film was centered on it made it a hard watch :(
In my opinion, I think Luca was an absolutely amazing movie and deserves more credit, the director of the movie also is an amazing person who answers a lot of questions people ask about it. Luca is by far one of my favourite movies and is extremely underrated in my opinion. As a reminder this is my opinion and I know Luca isn’t everyone’s type of movie but I think the movie definitely deserves more recognition.
I can't believe how hard they dropped the ball with Raya. Literally all they had to do was to show kids a bunch of extremely marketable dragons doing fun stuff, and then sell merch. They couldn't even manage that. Even the main dragon isn't a dragon for most of the film.
I can't help but compare disney to Ghibli, as many other people do. Disney keep producing these lifeless, pointless movies that follow, as you said, some template, a check-list that should (in theory) secure their success...still, people fall out of love with the studio with every movie they release. On the other hand, Ghibli take creative risks, with their last movie feeling so personal to Miyazaki as if he has made a movie for himself and nobody else, but everybody loved it. I don't know a single person who would say that movie wasn't mesmerizing...I'd even say it changed the course of my life, as dramatic as that may be. I think the point of this comparison is that art shouldn't strive to please as many people as it can because it ends up pleasing nobody, its creator included.
My family and I recently rewatched a bunch of old classics: Tarzan, Mulan, Princess and the Frog, etc. And as we were watching Tarzan I suddenly thought to myself: "oh my god, Disney could NEVER make a movie like this now." That level of 2D artistry, the incredible music, the earnest characterizations, the charming romances, the menacing villains....like, I genuinely think it's impossible for them to put out something even CLOSE to that in this day and age, and it's such a shame. The studio has completely lost the plot on how to make childhood magic come to life.
Not in a few years, but soon. I'll change Disney for the better once I get a job at its animation studio. I'll make new amazing films that'll become blockbusters.
the crazy thing abt disney making mediocre, borderline unwatchable films, is that they absolutely dont need to. they own too many properties that can make up the loss if a riskier project doesnt do as well as projected. walt would be so disappointed to see that today his whole company is just a money making scheme
The fact that Disney has fiercely litigated to keep its properties from falling into the public domain while refusing to make original content is the ultimate hypocrisy.
Makes me glad Steamboat Willie finally entered the public domain this year, knowing Disney wouldn't be able to outrun the expiration of their copyright forever. We're about to see even more of their stuff enter the public domain in the coming years, like the Silly Symphonies shorts and even their version of Snow White. ;)
I disagree that Soul and Turning Red were “formulaic” and “off putting” Disney movies, they are really Pixar’s movies and to me don’t feel like they’re checking off boxes. It’s more in line with Ratatouille in terms of stories that are risk taking and it crazy to me that they were compared in the same sentence to Wish! But I still am really loving this video and always enjoy learning more about the history of Disney.
But the issue is people watching these films 🙄 it’s like gamers complaining about companies squeezing video games with incomplete DLCs, yet they buy the DLCs (especially simmers, I used to be one 😅)
I nearly gave my mother a heart attack when I said I no longer care about Disney. Those words, coming from her artistic, creative, trivia loving, wanted-to-work-for-Disney daughter had said the words she never expected to hear. And it was a hard dose of reality in how much they have sunk. Thank goodness all the Disney's are passed on because it would break their hearts to see the company now. It's a laughing stock that is oversaturated with soulless CGI milking nostalgic cows until they're dried up and then they kick them for more milk. I gave and watched Frozen II but that was the last CGI animated film I watched. I'd rather go back to my VHS collection from the 90's and talk with my kid about all the methods used in the creation of 2D art, the art that inspired me decades ago to want to become a professional artist. I could sit there and tell you all the nuances that went on behind the scenes and what was adlibbed and what frames to pause to see something you shouldn't.... god, the good old days. Farewell Disney.
Universal: "So we're opening up this new massive theme park soon, and we think itll be successful cause we are actively listening to fans and innovating, while also once again picking up where our ~competitor~ fumbled the bag so get excited ya'll!" Disney around the same time: "Wait guys! Look over here! We're listening to fans too, see?! We're making another sequel! Look! Theyre not the only ones innovating! Please look over here! PLEASE!!!" Coincidence? I think NOT! 🧐😂
But Disney World is replacing a bunch of attractions with Profitable IP(TM) overlays and teasing "blue sky" projects that will not actually happen, which is totally a worthy response to a brand new theme park with a clear opening date! /s
Don't be so rosy about Uni. They'll cancel half the things they promised, too. If not canceled, scaled back and put on screens as a "compromise" for over spending. Universal isn't your friend either and they donate to Republicans who want to kill you. They are never a worthy comparison. All entertainment sucks, cuts corners, and abuses all of their staff.
It's dissapointing to see Moana getting milked like this when other Disney movies would've made great TV shows. Meet the Robinsons and Encanto specifically.
The best way to artistically expand these worlds is through a series. That gives time for genuine expansion. Take TTS, that show expanded on all the characters from the film in some way, and created some great new ones, like Cassandra and Varian, all with an interesting overarching story. (Highly recommend that show BTW.) But they've only done it for Tangled and BH6. How about an Encanto one? With a dozen main characters to work upon. Or a Raya show, where we learn more about the characters and their cultures? These worlds are ripe for expansion! Sadly, TV shows aren't as profitable, so we get stuck with these movies instead.
@@liz_violet I'm sorry, could you explain that? As far as I know, Disney's TV channels are still active and making new stuff. Not quite sure what you're talking about.
I feel like corps interfere with creatives in every industry and it has a huge impact on every aspect, bc we all cut corners instead of recognizing storytelling is an art first, then a business.
a lot of people like to villainize walt disney simply for being a white businessman in the 1940s despite the fact that he was much more than that and we’ll never truly know him. yes there are bad things about him that came out after his death, but he didn’t overwork his staff for profit, he did it because he was a dreamer who refused to back down on his creative vision. the using his house as collateral thing is news to me even as a film major and i feel like that level of dedication to art just doesn’t exist anymore
Disney cares more about quantity than quality because they want to have more content on Disney+ to try to make more money. I remember watching the BTS of Frozen 2 and noticed that the creators seemed very stressed out due to time restrictions. It's funny to compare how Disney took something like 70 years to make the first movie and became one of the most profitable franchises ever and then Frozen 2 came along and it felt very lackluster.
@@chloeep9329As a kid, there were a few things about Princess and the Frog that I didn't care for. The first being that I was expecting to get more screentime of Tiana as a human, not a frog. For some reason that just didn't appeal to me very much. The second issue I had with it was that creepy shadow man/witch doctor guy. He scared the crap outta me. I didn't wanna watch any of his scenes. If it hadn't been for those two issues, I probably would've watched Princess and the Frog a lot more as a kid.
i don’t think they understand how much the viewers love original movies encanto and moana did amazing and are still talked about to this day and have been nominated for awards but they see that and think oh it’s time for a sequel 😄 like no 💀 i want well written songs and a beautiful and original story WITH WELL WRITTEN CHARACTERS 😭😭😭
I think the reason most ppl find it upsetting is because we know they are capable of bringing us great stories. One of the reasons why I keep coming back to these films despite not having high hopes for them, is because I know they can prove me wrong. How long it will take it is another thing though.
I was working in a video store when the wave of awful 2 movies came out. It was at the height of VCR as babysitter and the parents buying them from us just wanted something to fill a couple of hours or so of their kids time. They really thought Disney meant quality film so didnt even watch them. Funny story - someone called asking for the new monster movie. So she was given Monsters Ball (new that week) and was furious to see the kids at the birthday party watching a sex scene. Turns out Monsters Inc was still new to them.
I think Disney should go back to what they were doing when Walt was running things. Pick some fairytale that aren’t well known, from countries other than England and France, and do retellings with the Disney magic. I think it would satisfy the need for refreshing stories, as well as cultural representation. I also think they should revisit the romance aspect of their films. Maybe not every film, but they should consider introducing it back into their films. Can we also get a princess that has a ball gown transformation? I miss those too
Disney really does work in cycles. We have the unbelievable highs of the Renaissance, followed the weird and disjointed lows of the Post-Renaissance Era (with an occasional high keeping the era's head above water). Next, more amazing highs of the Revival, sadly followed by the soulless cash grabbiness of the present era -- which, at least as of Wish, should definitely be differentiated from the Revival. I wonder what it will be called in the future. The Copper Age XD?
Sequel Age, Recycled Age, Milking Old Franchises Age...it's crazy the extent to which the slate of future movies is all just sequels. And there's not much they can do to change it at this point because animated movies take so long to make, even if they realize it's a mistake by the end of the year it will be too late.
I'm so glad i decided to open a Disney + account, did that only to see the old movies. Growing up in the 90s, i was used to the Renaissance movies and tv shows, but had no idea that the 60s, 70s movies, though lesser known, had so much variety in terms of design, characters, music, etc. And i absolutely love the sketchy animation of Aristocats, Jungle Book, Rescuers, etc. Those lines are so vibrant and alive, no 3D technology could replicate that feel.
Moana is one of my favorite Disney movies tbh it just feels different even the music. I'm probably gonna watch the second one but I'm definitely not giving Disney money to do so
Lilo and stitch is one of their classics that is near and dear to my heart, and it’s disappointing to see that Disney exec’s have since strayed from Walt’s vision. It would be great to see Iger and some of his associates either step down or change direction by experimenting with new formulas. More power and imagination needs to be given to their writers.
It's so funny that I was worried about puss in boots 2 because it was actually incredible! Creative boundaries were pushed, a powerful story was told, and it was a labour of love. Disney could really take a few notes from Dreamworks!
I feel like this is one of Disney’s dark ages like in the 40s, 60s, 70s and then in one or a couple decades we’ll see some more amazing movies and shows for some reason.
I love how he saw that Moana was doing very good and he went: "that's it, we need more Moana" instead of thinking: "what was it that made Moana so good and how can we make more movies as good as it was?" It's literally so lazy
Fr
I hate that idiot business men are allowed to run creative companies. I'm glad they're flopping hard
u need to replace him
When I say I’m only eager (albeit cautiously) for the potential expanded worldbuilding, but that’s it…
When I worked in animation, that was legit how the producers thought. You're still wrong but at least this time it let us to artistic expression we have bee craving for years 😂
We are fr living through another Disney dark age. It’s so bleak seeing every other studio innovate while Disney repeatedly embarrasses itself
Exactly, so true
Disney is like the Sears of animation, the unstoppable juggernaut turned emaciated fossil.
I'm thinking Disney needs to be in dire straights to produce worthwhile content
Tbh, I'm starting to think the Golden Age of Disney was an anomaly and the *truth* of Disney is mediocrity.
@@Pleurigloss I'd definitely say not mediocre since the Renaissance was truly a massive success and a global influence, but the way they handle situations after their best times is truly peak mediocrity
At this point, Disney is showing their desperation for an actual box office success. And I say this as a fan
It takes 6 years to plan a movie so this masterpiece is the result of the former ceo
That plot of Moana 2 LITERALLY sounds JUST LIKE Frozen 2.
like the script writers are being forced to chuck out so many films at once that they can't elaborate and improve their projects.
Yea
They need to go head and give Moana a man idk what they so scared of no one has an issue with the princesses in movies having a prince we have an issue when they are supposed to just always be the savior let the girls be an equal and still have a prince, kinda like little mermaid live action showed
I for one liked Frozen 2, but I can't see myself saying the same for Moana 2- for me the 1st Moana ended things quite beautifully.
I believe he's 99% responsible for all these flops.

Like I had hopes after Encanto was released but then everything just came tumbling down 😭😭
All of that is going to change.
Walt saying they will never make another Mary Poppins didn’t age well. At least he didn’t but the company certainly did.
and yet he was right about the forgetting part, i didn’t even remember that new version of mary poppins until reading this comment

If Disney makes Zootopia a live action movie, I'm calling the cops.
Please don’t say that out loud. It might come true! We’re entering the Straight to DVD Sequel age! But it’s longer because between this and the dang Live Action remakes, the IP is being updated and people who don’t know anything about this, because why would they, they got lives, just goes to them because it’s entertainment.
That’s like a top 3 Disney movie for me noooo 😭

im having a hard time wondering what else they can do with moana. its not like there is any mysteries like elsa's powers, so.... what now? if they actually annonce another unneeded sequel, like the supposed encanto 2, i might lose my mind
i think encanto would actually be aided by a tv series, since theres so many characters with tons of room for exploration, but i have no clue what the plot could be for a film. you could make tons and tons of short plots abt family antics, but not a long movie plot

You can sum up Bob Iger's "leadership style" with this quote from him:
"We are not obligated to make art, we art not obligated to make history, we are obligated to make money."
That proves hes a bad businessman because he doesnt even understand his own product.
Edit: Michael Eisner said the words, Bob Iger has been documented as using them in discussions of his leadership of Disney
I believe that was Michael Eisner who said this, but I'm sure the sentiment still applies to Bob Iger also.
Wow. Ok Bob, good luck losing money because no one likes your art. Funny how that works 😂
@colbystearns5066
My mistake, eisner said them, Bob Iger is documented as using them as his guiding principle
We cannot expect numerous hits, but if every film has an original and imaginative concept, then we can be confident that something will break through.”
There’s plenty to criticise Michael Eisner for, but I’d say the the current Disney ethos - making money irrespective of quality - it pretty antithetical to Eisner’s philosophy as expressed above.
Yep, it's deeply sobering that the marketing of movies these days is consistently better than the screenwriting itself!
My mom went to see the live action Aladdin because she wanted to relive the glory days of watching the original in theaters, so textbook nostalgia case. God, I wish I could’ve also seen the original in theaters. 😭
@@rubyy.7374 brother your mom was scammed to the moon and beyond
Another big trend I’ve noticed is how afraid of “showtunes” Disney has become. The music is now very pop-y and more mainstream rather than suiting a character or story. And that lack of rich music has been a huge contributor to why the movies feel so empty. The songs aren’t bad, they just don’t have the same soul that they used to. And deprioritizing one of the sensory aspects of a movie really makes it feel cheap or like tv episodes. You just can’t connect or feel invested in quite the same way.
More showtunes/ music with heart please!
You’re right, when it comes to music Disney needs more “Beauty and the Beast” and less “Wish.”

just rewatched Hunchback and OMG the soundtrack is so beautiful and evocative. i miss that level of songwriting.
Fun(?) fact: every other era of disney has been a “dark” era:
The wartime era
The bronze/dark age
The post-renaissance
And the era that we’re in right now.
Yeah, I’m wondering why every time someone brings that up, it’s ignored.
@@theguivrelord, help us from sequels. Just make them all tv series.

I think it's so ironic that disney is aiming for quantity in a time they have all the money and power to prioritize quality.
they chase away their talented animators (qualitly) because they were white… and hired a bunch (quantity) of activists. So…. they have no choice but quantity over quality now.

the disappointment i felt when i saw that announcement was so grave felt like a funeral fr
I’m so confused why Bob Iger looked at Moana 2 and said “yes let’s do that and base the decision off of streams” after just a couple months ago he said he realizes that Disney has been doing too much and lost focus and will be shifting to focusing on story instead of putting more out…
And then Moana 2 happens lol.
It's a shame because maybe they learned their lesson, that making unoriginal slop won't attract audiences, but we won't see a change for some time
I had no idea Walt Disney himself said that he never wanted any of his movies to have sequels or become “franchises.” I feel even worse about all these sequels and remakes that are coming out now knowing that Disney’s own founder wouldn’t want this… 😣
Between this and WB repeatedly hacking their art to shreds, it’s over.

Omg I think I vaguely remember hearing about the cancellation of Newt too. That was so long ago, huh
As someone who really doesn't like Atlantis, watch Atlantis instead.
strange worlds was garbage, literally just an Avatar clone
I think I am the only person who actually enjoyed Strange World haha. Granted, the characters and storyline were forgettable. (I actually had completely forgotten about the gooey thing! Which is not a good sign)
But the world-building was absolutely gorgeous.
Tbf with Luca, I believe that came out in the middle of the pandemic
the way he calls moana a franchise when it's just ONE movie so far
The problem with the Disney converting their TV show attempts to movies is that they have already done this before. With movies such as Belle's Magical World, Atlantis 2, and Tarzan and Jane, show that doing this is not really the best decision
Hercules 2, Cinderella 2 and 3, Mulan 2, Lady and Tramp 2, 102 dalmations, Little mermaid 2, Peter Pan 2, Jungle Book 2. My god they did them all!
IDK, that's just what I thought
i'm still sad they cancelled gigantic :(
they could also do fairy tales from cultures other than just western ones. there are literally countless tales from all over the world they could take inspiration from and it could be really neat to see them adapt a more obscure fairy tale and introduce it to the public but it's like they don't even bother to look beyond the already famous ones 😪

It’s just bad story telling Disney has always been woke lol
I saw this with Ralph Breaks The Internet, but it feels like Disney is like "we don't need to try because we'll be successful no matter what" and I really hope the lack of financial success will finally shake them out of it

Disney is just turning into Gamefreak with Pokémon. Quantity over quality, throwing at us anything, thinking that their big company names are enough to make us swallow their products
I am sure GameFreak is similar to it. It has been milking Pokémon so much and so dry that I left it behind.
And by looking at the sales of Pokemon games / box office revenues, you can see they are getting rewarded for it
To be entirely fair, I really liked some of the newer original movies you listed (Luca, Soul, and Turning Red).

I'm sick and tired of these remakes 😭
that Walt Disney quote about sequels is damning omg...
" a death spiral where their original movies started sucking and underperforming,"
what are you talking about?
Encanto was an amazing film, you're all just too blinded by rage and nostalgia to appreciate it
@@kamilbidzinski475 tbf i think this is just a generalized statement- also i didn't care for encanto myself, and it was solely because of lin's music. i don't like his style at all so the fact that so much of the film was centered on it made it a hard watch :(
@@kamilbidzinski475 Encanto is the exception, not the rule.
Disney: We're making a Moana 2!
Me: Dies of secondhand embarrassment 💀
They really have disrespected Walt it’s a shame. Hopefully Disney will change for the better in a few years 🤞
Not in a few years, but soon. I'll change Disney for the better once I get a job at its animation studio. I'll make new amazing films that'll become blockbusters.
lol watching this from a Disneyland hotel room (on a break)
the crazy thing abt disney making mediocre, borderline unwatchable films, is that they absolutely dont need to. they own too many properties that can make up the loss if a riskier project doesnt do as well as projected. walt would be so disappointed to see that today his whole company is just a money making scheme
Universal: "So we're opening up this new massive theme park soon, and we think itll be successful cause we are actively listening to fans and innovating, while also once again picking up where our ~competitor~ fumbled the bag so get excited ya'll!"
Disney around the same time: "Wait guys! Look over here! We're listening to fans too, see?! We're making another sequel! Look! Theyre not the only ones innovating! Please look over here! PLEASE!!!"
Coincidence?
(Highly recommend that show BTW.)
But they've only done it for Tangled and BH6. How about an Encanto one? With a dozen main characters to work upon. Or a Raya show, where we learn more about the characters and their cultures? These worlds are ripe for expansion!
Sadly, TV shows aren't as profitable, so we get stuck with these movies instead.
now, if only they *kept disney channel* so those tv series CAN be profitable :D
@@liz_violet I'm sorry, could you explain that? As far as I know, Disney's TV channels are still active and making new stuff. Not quite sure what you're talking about.
@@crimsong8068If they are still active, they’re beyond unused. Disney has given up on any other streaming or tv services in place of Disney +
10:43 WHAT?! Disney shut down their hand drawn animation division! What are they doing? 😑
Yeah. Out of touch CEOs as usual.
Well said here! Disney has lost so much of its soul for the sake of making a quick buck, which is so disheartening to see as an animation fan.
"Evil cannot create anything new. It can only corrupt and ruin what good forces have invented or made."
- JRR Tolkien
If only modern Disney was being driven by artistry and imagination instead of money 😞
Didn’t they promise to go back to 2D animation and create less but better quality? What happened to that?
They tried 1 movie (Princess and the Frog) which didn't sell overwhelmingly well, so they immediately gave up.
Disney needs to do whatever they did in the 90s to have another renniasance.
I think the reason most ppl find it upsetting is because we know they are capable of bringing us great stories. One of the reasons why I keep coming back to these films despite not having high hopes for them, is because I know they can prove me wrong. How long it will take it is another thing though.
Moana 2 *and* live action Moana?????? This is going to be a nightmare
I love hearing the history of Disney from a fan. Makes it genuine!
Wait…… the music will be done by the Bridgerton girls? It’s dead. You’re right.
As a fan of the classic Disney films, their current situation really disappoints me. ☹️
instead of a sequel to Moana, it would be better to make a movie about how Maui became a demigod ~~~
