  • The shower isn't supposed to be a dangerous place, but once you turn on the water, you might be attacked by your shower curtain. But don't blame the curtain! Blame physics!

The "inside" curtains - when you have the waterproof liner inside as opposed to the decorative fabric outside - are the only ones with magnets, I think. It's not like the magnets actually *matter*, though - they've never stopped a single shower curtain from sucking in and clinging to me.

      AlthenaLuna
Yeah the inside clear ones are the ones with the magnets. Idk, I’m tall so my head is usually above the shower curtain railing, so maybe thats why I’ve never had a problem feeling like I’m being trapped in the curtain lol.

@Davvy Jannes True, but even with the tubs they will stick to, they just don't adhere strongly enough (at least none I've had did) to not still suction in. They'd have to also be heavy enough to actually weigh the curtain down significantly, and they don't...so they just slide up a little and prevent nothing.

Water spraying on the bottom of tub displaces air. That air escapes the tub in the space between curtain and side of tub, blowing curtain away from side of tub and inwards. Have observed this for over 60 years.
Best fix is a microfiber curtain without liner. Microfiber curtain gets wet and instantly clings against side of tub.
Although wet, they will not let a drop of water actually pass through the micro fiber. Are also machine washable.

if you leave a gap on either end of the wall and the shower curtain it helps to normalize the pressure on the bathroom side and the shower side and you get less cling, or you know just buy some magnets as most bathtubs have some metal in them.

Not sure this is the same here, but it reminds me of the diffusion pumps we used at Space Power Institute while I was in college. A roughing pump would take most of the air out of the vacuum chamber, the a cylinder that sprayed oil downward into the cylinder would pull the more rarefied air to the bottom of the cylinder (diffusion pump) where another roughing pump would remove it.
That's what I understood of it anyway.

Tip: while the water is warming up, use your hand to spread water on the tub's interior as if you were washing it; make it pretty wet. Then, when you go in, flatten the curtain against the tub's interior with your hands. It gets stuck, it won't attack you again. :-)

Mount the shower rod several inches outside the bathtub's edge so it is already hanging at a slant towards the tub. That way it is already at the angle the air flow is capable of blowing it to and it will not be able to move further into the inside tub area.

  • @richardbidinger2577
    @richardbidinger2577 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I attached small fishing swivels about every six inches along the curtain, a few inches above the edge of the tub, then tied some fairly significantly heavy lead sinkers to some fishing line with a loop on one end, and hooked them to the swivels so they hung a couple inches off the floor that way my shower curtains wouldn't get sucked into the tub. Even made some small cloth bags for the weights so they didn't scratch the outside of the tub or make a horrendous noise every time you got in or out of the shower. Works fine and I can take the weights off when I wash my shower curtains. It also took a few tries to get the right weights that were heavy enough to hold the curtains back without pulling them out of the tub altogether.

If a shower curtain attacks me it would definitely have to be a poltergeist. My shower has glass screen.

I moved the bar the curtain hangs from, out about 4-5 inches. It not only opened up the way the shower felt, it trapped that overly-affectionate curtain against the tub. No more cold-wet leg-humping shower curtain!

I don’t have any need for shower curtains myself at home.
Whenever I am somewhere that has them, before getting under the shower, I make the bath walls wet where the curtains hang over them. Then I spray water on the from the inside, to cleanly push the curtains to the walls. That makes them stick tight enough. I haven’t had a problem with moving curtains for decades.

i think whats happening is the same thing that happens when your hand is very slightly wet and you are able to grab on to things easier as if your hands are sticky. this helps me closing metal doors at work since our building has a high positive pressure so you have to pull hard to close the doors.

I found a solution to the showcurtain problem, don't close the curtain fully. Leave a gap on both sides about 15cm or more and a small gap from the floor, about 2cm will do. No more sticky curtains.

If you leave a little space and don't close the curtain all the way, it doesn't do that as much.
It also helps if you set the curtain rod as high as possible.

  • @Zpajro
    @Zpajro 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Just laeve one end off the curtain open. If it´s open all the way top to bottom on one side, air can move in and out which negates the "clingy curtain" effect.

  • @ralexandra1058

    Two solutions:
Weighted curtains, or curtains with magnets at bottom. OR
Seal the curtain to the shower/tub rim by pressing the curtain down against the wet surface of the shower/tub.

All what you need to do is not pull it completely closed. Leave some opening. The air will flow through there, balancing the pressure difference.

  • @Cammi_Rosalie

Run a wet washrag across the top of the tub. Close the curtain. Push the curtain back enough so it rests on the top of the tub, and folds over into the tub. (Careful to not allow a channel on the ends for water to flow onto the floor from) The wet surface of the tub make the curtain stick to it. Set shampoo/conditioner bottles, back-brushes and such along the edge. Curtain stays put.
Bonus tip: Want a better and stronger flow from your shower? Take the shower-head off and remove the little white disc with the tiny pin-hole in it. It will sometimes have a plus-shaped slot in it like a phillips screw. You might be able to just turn it out like a screw. All the water has to go through that itty-bitty hole and ends up being a piss-poor stream. Yank that sucker out, and enjoy the full flow once again.

    Magnets ftw!!!
As soon as i saw this vid, i immediately thought Bernoulli's law :)
Also thought the droplets on the curtain might cause a gradient in electric charge.
Had no idea about the vortex though.

I recently had this problem for the first time in my life. My immediate thought was the speed of the water spray causing a low pressure zone. Higher pressure from outside the shower moves in to fill the low pressure zone. Im glad to see I was right but now....How do I stop this from happening?
    Suggestions:
1.) Lower the pressure of my shower head. UNACCEPTABLE
2.) Change my shower curtain to a heavier fabric. UNACCEPTABLE
3.) Lower the air pressure outside the shower. 🤔🤔🤔

Wow, I only noticed this effect for the first time maybe three weeks ago, when I moved into my student dorm room in Denmark. Before I always had stable shower walls/panels/doors whatever you wanna call them made from plexi-glass … and I'm over 30. I never experienced it up until now and boom, SciShow video!
Stuff like that happens a lot with SciShow and it's not that I'm only the videos that immediately affect me, because I try to watch all of the episodes.
Probably some evil power at play here.
