  • In this video we have a first look at creating Meshes in DragonBones, and what is Mesh Deformation.
    We also have our first semi-crash too :)

    Thanks, man. This explanation got me started with rigging weights in general and DragonBones in particular. Very well explained and presented!

    I found fiddling with weight faders more convenient than inserting a number, that way you can feel it out more naturally. Also helps to first put the arm in the position where the deformation will take place and only then start messing with weights, so that there will be less guesses and back-and-forth work.
    By the way I had the same bug with DragonBones not selecting things during watching/learning from the video, right before you had it in there haha. REALLY appreciate the tutorials Adam, cheers!

      Thank you very much for the kind feedback, and yes... I've ( sort of) come to the same conclusion as you regarding putting the arm ( or anything else ) in a starting position. I now tend to pose stuff in the in-between position, so there is just a little deformation going either way. Again, thank you :)

    Thanks a lot for these. Dragonbones is a great program but there are so few good tutorials around so you're a life saver! Before I was trying to 2D animate with Blender which was... an experience XD

    Hello, Adam! First of all, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
    I'm following your tutorials and wondering: is there any way to avoid DragonBones from blurrying the sprite images the bone chain is linked to?

    • @DigitalArtStuff
      @DigitalArtStuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Joyce, and thank you so much for your kind word. Unfortunately this is something I have not found a solution to. I have the same problem, even for the animations I made for a game I worked on. FYI, I have also used Spine (not free, and a little expensive for some), but I didn't encounter that problem there (yet). Really sorry Joyce I don't have a fix for this issue.

    • @joycecarmo5929
      @joycecarmo5929 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your answer, Adam! I wish I could use Spine, but unfortunately it's on the expensive side for our small studio.
      I think I'm gonna try for Adobe Character Animator and wish I get better luck there.
      Just for reference, have you ever tried Spriter Pro? If yes, do they present this same issue?

    • @DigitalArtStuff
      @DigitalArtStuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joycecarmo5929 I've only seen a few videos regarding Adobe Character Animator, (recently I saw a video by Brad Colbow), and it did seem interesting. But, I have never used it. As for Spriter Pro, I haven't followed the progress of that software for a while, and I have never used it. I remember that Spriter Pro 2 was to be released a while ago, but, I'm not sure if it still has been released. I was interested in it, but I think the long wait for version 2 just made me search for other software packages, and that's how I found DragonBones. Also, if you didn't know, DragonBones is not supported any more. I think the developers abandoned it a while ago.

    • @joycecarmo5929
      @joycecarmo5929 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't know DragonBones were abandoned. It's definitely better to search for new software, in this case. Thanks again for your answers!

    The fact that there is no brush to paint the weight of the bones in the program (which is in any similar program) kills me.

    • @DigitalArtStuff
      @DigitalArtStuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I can see that. I use to do weighting in 3d (when I was still doing 3d back in the day) and... yes... painting the weight of the bones can be quite handy.
      Unfortunately, I can't see any updates or new features happening to DragonBones... since it doesn't seem the dev are working on this any more.
      Anyway... thank you so much for watching the video(s) and commenting 😊

    These videos are just so perfect but I have a question, I'm working currently on a big project and I'll need to animate things like fabric, can I do that with just dragging the points around without using the bones you're using in the video, I just want the easiest fastest way to animate things like fabric or hair without the need to use bones... it that possible?
    And I'm also wondering will you create a video about animating fabric or hair?

    • @DigitalArtStuff
      @DigitalArtStuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, and thank you so much for your kind feedback. Fabric and hair is a subject I really haven't delved into yet. And, there have been a few more people that have asked the same question. But, how would I do if I were to? I think using both way. Bone and individual points. I think I would use bones for the main clumps of hair, and then do minor adjustments moving points. As with fabric, maybe the same way. I really need to do a little test myself too, before I can give any answer. (Btw... I think that's why many Game Devs make stylized characters to avoid cloth and hair...hehehe). There is the other issue too, if you've noticed, that I have made an videos lately on DragonBones. That's because I think the developers have abandoned this software. There haven't been any updates or even any news for at least two years (at least). It's a pity if this turns out to be true, because I really did like working with DragonBones. I've recently started working with Spine (it's not free), but there is also another program called Creature Animation... and that one has some stuff in it for fabrics and hair (it's not free). Anyway, maybe at some point I will look if I can do a little video regarding cloth and hair. Again, thank you for your feedback and best of luck with your next project.

      @@DigitalArtStuff Thank you for the quick reply, I'd love to see you try it out in a video for sure, for example:
      How to animate clothes, hair on a character or things like a banner, you know things that you see in big games like Ori, Hollow Knight and so on...
      I just won GDWC 2021 with my first game fifth place like a week ago and so I'm going bigger with my next project and animating fabric is one of the things that I'll need to learn how to do in my next project as the main character is wearing cloth with like a hoodie and stuff like that so yeah a video with that topic will help me a ton honestly to understand the main idea behind it...
      Let me give an example of some animations that you could work on in a video, for example:
      1- A character wearing fabric and in Idle
      2- And then Idle but this time he is standing in front of a fan that's blowing air
      3- A running animation where the fabric gets flapped around and move in different directions.
      4- A walking animation where the fabric is less flappy
      And how to do it using only points or with points and bones together And so on, just to understand the main idea behind it, I'd love to see a video on that.
      For me using Spine or Creature Animation is very hard for me as I'm an indie dev who works alone on my projects for years so paying that amount of money is not an option for me sadly, but for me I see no issue with DragonBones in general, I feel like it can get the job done for what's needed and after all that's what matters the most.
      Anyway, let me know what do you think about this and if you're going to be creating a video about fabric and hair on dragonbones and if so I'll definitely be waiting for you for sure...
      Your videos are the best ever on TH-cam and I thank you for making quality fun tutorials like that.
      Also if there is way to contact you like an email or a website and so on, I'd love to add you on my list for sure in case I needed help with anything while animating and so on.

    its possible to add bones in pixel art too? im trying but the pic is to small and the bones stuck =s

    • @DigitalArtStuff
      @DigitalArtStuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello there. From the little experience I have with pixel-art, I don't believe DragonBones is the correct tool to animate pixel-art art assets, especially if they are at a very small size (usually pixel-art is at a very small size). I would personally animate pixel-art frame by frame, maybe in a program like Aseprite or any art drawing program where pixel-art can be created. The only experience I have is for the walking frames I did for the little character walking in a video called "Pixel Rain", which is uploaded here on this channel. I just made those few walking frame in photoshop. This is just my personal opinion based on the little knowledge I have, but when it comes to animations I believe frame by frame is a better approach for pixel-art, unless you do a normal character in DragonBones and then just somehow pixelate all the frames, but... it won't look like normal pixel-art... it would look like a low res pixelated character.
      If I may suggest... "AdamCYounis" ... is a great artist and content creator when it comes to pixel-art... th-cam.com/users/AdamCYounisvideos
