Pure hydroplaning brilliance. I was not too surprised, we have been doing this for over years on quads now. Still that Icelandic Jeep looked too heavy to pull it off. It was awesome to see the suspension work as it skipped over that choppy water. I was not shocked to see the snowmobile take it, better power to weight on one of those. Thank you Top Gear, once again great entertainment.
I remember watching this as a kid and the I found it so fascinating was unbelievable, but since I understand the concept of psychics it doesn't surprise as much but it just so cool!
I honestly didn't think that car would make it. The snowmobile is a lot limber and has the shovel things on its tracks. But to lift one and a half ton across water and make it to the end. That is crazy cool! If the Topgear team had tried this themselves, they would have probably sunk the jeep, and its rear end would still stick out of that lake. Nice driving, I think Water must be weird to drive on ^^
I don't think I'd have the guts to drive up that mountain like that. These guys are truly nuts over there. And I thought usual hill climbs were extreme. Damn
kinda figured it would work. I live in the U.P. and about 3 hours south of where I live there's an inland lake that has ramps and that is used for snowmobile races in the winter, about two years ago, they started using it in the summer too...with the snowmobiles. It's pretty fun to watch!
I live in the Northeast part of U.S. and some people still have no clue what a snowmobile is. Weird to me, they're awesome. Went 85 mph through a field on one once. Scary, but fun.
a fellow called Frenchy Cloutier used to drive across the Matagami river in the summertime in TIMMINS ONTARIO, think Shania Twain, that's where she's from too. He was doing that with his snowmobile back in 1970 so - I am sure he wasn't the 1st but likely the 1st to do it on TV.
My father's brother used to compete at that, He won 1 Championship and the Icelandic Title. he competed from 1987-1995, and had competed the longest of all in that competition at that time, Gunnar Guðmundsson
ain't this from a really old top gear episode???? i have already watched it more than a year ago! however, this vid is amazing and this achivement is legendary!!!! :D
Well said jimqa2. As a Dutchman I think that the people of Iceland can keep the money, we've got enough as it is. Also, Brulluhman, if you say all those historical stuff you can keep on discussing for ever and ever, because we lost and won battles against England in the past, so both sides can say: "We've beat you in the past!" Let's just stick to football when it comes down to fighting battles, on the pitch I mean.
You've not seen "swamp buggy" racing then. That jeep? America has professional racing classes for that sort of thing, instead of amateurs with trucks they've built in their sheds.
@@MountainGanesh yeah, because riding along the floor of a swamp is much more impressive than literally driving on the surface of water... The reason americans can't do what these guys do is because the extra weight would make you sink...
Josef Robbins You are completely wrong. LS v8s make more horsepower per Liter than the older BBC. All the while being durable, lighter, cheaper, smaller, and easier to maintain.
Josef Robbins Big blocks are completely unnecessary now. you can make 2,346horsepower from a 401Ci LSX. Technology has reached a point where we don't need 600+Ci BBC to make horsepower.
As said before it's not fake. It's actually normal in cars and it's called hydroplaning or aquaplaning. When there's a lot of water on the road and you drive fast you can "drive" on the water.
And a few years later Arctic Trucks made the Toyotas for the North Pole Special. (North Pole special and the DIY space shuttle are the high watermark of scripted TV)
Imagine you take a tour there: "Over here you see some people in jeeps driving up a mountain. Oh and over there on the lake is Jesus"
Not sure why your comment doesn't have more likes.

Doc: Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.
Marty: So we going to Iceland then?
Doc: ..., ..., yes.
No. If you drive on our moss we'll end you. Drive on the road or stay out.
All you obviously need are treaded tires, a V8 engine and off-road suspension.
That is one of the coolest fucking things I've ever seen in my life.
I know right.

That vehicle skipping madly over the Icelandic lake, was frankly, beyond awesome.
And incredibly hilarious!
Richards advice was close, but no quite true. What you should remember is this ; If you find yourself near an Icelandic bloke, don't get in his car.
or you could just walk?
never got why Iceland is greener then Greenland and has less ice
apparently it was named that way on purpose to make Iceland sound worse to live in than Greenland to prevent more people from settling there.
guess it worked
That is completely true, as an icelander i can confirm that is a very bad idea

They've been doing this in Wisconsin with snowmobiles for years.
And they do it as well with snowmobiles in Iceland ;o)
I'm 30 and as far as I can remember they have been doing it here in Canada, this probably started 40-50 years ago.
