I can reproduce blue pixelation with minimal light entry not completely dark with the software update. If I completely cover the lens so there can be literally no light with just a single test it is black with 3.4 second exposure not 30 but with 3.4 second in extremely dark room laying on table due to wobble, I get a big blue cluster. Software didn’t resolve that but not sure if that’s a sensor problem or the software’s inability to process that extreme low light mode with minimal light entry. I guess I should’ve rotated the camera 90° and may try that to see if the outcome is the same or different that might inform whether it’s a sensor or software Problem.

Sorry to hear! I just did your table test - completely pitch black, no blue at all. Also did some nice night sky photos, and didn’t have any blue lines there as well. Apple does make mistakes, but their customer service might be able to assist. Try taking the complaint to the store, and exchanging it for a whole new phone. Alternatively - it’s waiting for an update (who knows how long.)

Using the 16 pro max. The first time I did the table test, I saw blue streaks in the whole photo. Then, as someone recommended, I repeated the table test but holding the camera module, and just had blue streaks at the right side of the photo. Finally, I updated to iOS 18.0.1, repeated the same test, and no blue streaks. Greetings from Argentina!

There seems to be patterned color (chroma) noise from the sensor, It has the same light capture specs and (I'm assuming) microlens set-up. Soo perhaps due to the different electronics and read-out, the noise is different and Apple hasn't adjusted their noise reduction algorithm to compensate for the different noise characteristics?. I'd love to see a pure RAW comparison of the 15 and 16 to see what the untouched noise looks like.

Please read: few hav probably done this before but for the last four or five years, I bought two iPhones of the same make release and invariably one takes better images with main camera and another takes better images with Ultra Wide. And it goes on from there. Many years ago I had an iPhone brand new that was taking some really funky pictures and Apple wanted to reclaim the device. Anyway, I got a replacement and had different problems and then got a third one and had still different problems all with the camera I’ve never seen anyone review two brand new devices of the same make side-by-side, but the bottom line is I believe there are manufacturing differences relative to quality control that result in the kinds of differences that have one reviewer or comment are saying they have a great experience with a given lens and another one saying they have a degraded experience. I have seen both increase Functionality and degradation on the same model purchased on the same day though possibly manufactured at a different time prior to release or even at a different facility. But I’ve never seen anyone compare, like I have done, two iPhones are the same making and model and do a side-by-side camera comparison, and you’ll almost certainly see what I’ve seen, which is across the spectrum of flash, night mode, long exposure, indoor lighting, outdoor lighting, tripod, Ultra Wide, selfie, Maine, and 5X zoom you will find some differences even on a tripod in the exact same lighting at the same moment between devices that are measurable and repeatable

Sometimes I’ve bought three to even four phones to get one that had the most ideal picture taking capabilities. I got it on my 16 Pro Max with the update, but I pressed it firmly against a leather wrapped pillow and then I didn’t get it and the exposure time was the same for each case but my curiosity is whether or not if you have a flat against something completely obscuring light you get a different result because setting it on the table when there’s a camera bump, and it rocks a little bit lets a little bit of light in. Much like if you set your camera against your hand a little light transmitted through your finger and then it’s usually more reddish. But curious with light obscuration if you get the same outcome. Every year I get more than one iPhone because I have more than one problem with the cameras that require multiple phones to get the best outcome usually at the expensive one lens or another being not as good as the other physical phone are the same making and model released at the same time.

@@EdwardRuthinowski I've tried a bunch of different tests now and it's pretty severe on my main camera, a bit of an issue on my 5x, and not an issue on my ultrawide. I'm pretty confident it's not a light leak as I've been testing with an (opaque) case that has a lip around the module and then holding that lip flat against microfiber cloths on my desk to ensure a tight seal. Most damming, I can see the same blue patterns in pitch black shots and shots with very low light; I took some shots in an otherwise dark closet with some light shining under the door and no matter where in the closet I took a photo, there was the same glowing blue streaks discoloring the image (always in the same pattern).

As I’m reading these and experience the same but not when I completely cover the camera lens versus minimal light leakage even in a very dark room if you turn the camera 90° do you get the same pixelization or chroma or whatever or is it rotated 90° or just different because light is coming from a different perspective. Maybe the answer doesn’t even matter but I’m something I might try. It does seem like if some people are having a problem somewhere it could be hardware but then again it’s not guaranteed that everyone is doing the same way.

I reported that for years and years going back to iOS 9 I discovered when I got the 15 Pro Max with 24 megapixel capability anytime I use the timer on the watch the phone for three seconds 10 seconds whatever my 24 megapixel shot or 48 megapixel shot would be throttle down to a 12 megapixel shot for reasons that might’ve been relevant When iOS 9 was a thing but I couldn’t find an operating system going back nearly 10 years that didn’t convert a timer shot into a 12 megapixel burst. And in JPEG format so you lost the format selection p, forced into a burst changing the quality of the image, especially in moderate lighting. and at a lower resolution. I had in depth conversations with Apple and finally a year later. It seems that was remedied. But anyways for many years and many many many Apple products spanning 20 years easily. There are times one widely easily reproducible issue is not reported by enough people and it seems to get back burner to the point a correction is never made. I’ve got some software functional issues that go back three years five years and they’ve never been fixed even though it is always confirmed, it’s actually not working but doesn’t seem to bother anyone so they prioritize over things that affect more users. Here too if not enough people pay attention as others have mentioned very few would notice or take this kind of photography it might not get fixed unless substantial reports are made to Apple or it’s coincident with something they’re already doing on that topic is my experience and it’s true of any company prioritization based on number of issues, severity, level of consumer interest, etc. engineering resources. Sometimes it’s super disappointing to have major functions or camera functions or shared with you photo content that doesn’t appear across 10 devices in three operating system system versions year after year and yet not remedied. I guess I don’t take it for granted anymore that anything will be fixed without substantial reporting directly to Apple outside of forums.

All devices mentioned here are updated to iOS 18.0.1 testing
I have a 15 Pro Max put it facedown on counter in evening 5 am here low light. 3.4 second exposure determined by phone. Looks like one single pixel Dot of blue rest of image black. Didn’t repeat it.
Place 15 Pro Max, firmly against leather wrapped pillow took picture again achieving 3.4 second exposure determined by the phone and appears perfectly black
Took my 16 Pro Max set it on counter same environment 3.4 second exposure also and blue constellation or cities, clusters and dots and smear like similar to what you’ve shown lower middle right but substantial area of image
However, took pro. Max said it against a leather wrap pillow firmly to completely obscure any light entry and the image was jet black.
Can do more if interested, but this is a quick assessment, comparing both models and getting a different outcome even on the 16 promax specifically solid confirmation that light entry is precluded because when setting it on a counter given, the left corner of the phone will be slightly other than flush against the counter because of the offset of a camera bump leaving it rocking you won’t really preclude all light entry perfectly setting it on the counter I think you need to completely cover the lens like I did or with a microfiber or pressing it up against a vinyl or leather iPhone case or something. Counter method seems insufficient to secure or confirm no light entry

I get some reddish spotting over the years, but if I put the camera lens completely against a leather pillow or the leg of some pants or whatever that ensures there’s literally no light I might get a different result of an actual black outcome. It doesn’t mean that any of the artifacts that are present should be present on photos that are taken where there’s a minimal amount of light regardless buttrue black true dark test would require not setting it just on the counter or a flat table because the camera bump will result in other than a perfectly flat contact with the camera and the surface of the table.

To be fair (or not) software is asking a bloody lot from tiny lens' and sensors. I don't know who makes the lens but I believe Sony makes the sensors. For the amount they have to produce in the time frame they have would be a miracle in itself for all of them to be perfect. I do know that, in the past, camera sensors were very sensitive to heat and in some cases photographers used small ice packs wrapped in towels to keep the camera cool. More prominent with video when the sensor is continuously active.

Curious, if in bathroom on counter with “total darkness“ you will get a different outcome if you put it against something like a vinyl wrapped binder or the leg of your pants or a leather wrapped pillowcase where you can absolutely guarantee there is no light getting in. Even in the darkest room where there’s the most minuscule amount of light It’s also possible that you’re getting artifacts that you shouldn’t get, but if you could completely obscure the light entry by not letting it sit on the table where the camera bump causes a slight rock over the phone, which of course means it is not perfectly flat to the table surface so maybe if you got perfect prevention of light you’d get a black screen. Of course that’s not realistically what happens in any real world situation and the artifacts shouldn’t be there but I’m curious if you literally ensure complete darkness through completely covering by compressing the phone lightly into something that ensures literally zero light would you still get those artifacts. Because I got them on the table top, but when I pushed my phone into the pillow, I did not. Nobody takes a picture that way so I completely understand. It’s not an explanation or an excuse, it just might lend a little further understanding to the circumstances that create this.

      True mate

    • @EdwardRuthinowski
      @EdwardRuthinowski วันที่ผ่านมา

I think it is also possible that it’s hardware because in a separate post from me in response to this topic, I tried to inform anyone who happened to read it that for many years I bought multiple iPhones of the promax version and every single time each phone has different camera problems from the failure to focus in corners to slight blurriness throughout but at the time of release or probably at any time 15 Pro Max versus 15 Pro Max B or 14 Pro Max a versus 14 Pro Max B and so on the main camera, lens may be better on one of two phones side-by-side, but the ultra might be better on the other of those two phones and the selfie phone camera may be better on one and worse than the other, so it is possible, as always that a software update might fix something and it’s also possible that Different user experiences are related to the manufacturing control or lack there of that result in disparity between user experience.
Also, well, I think no one should get these artifacts and I even get them on my own 16 Pro max and feel like overall the camera system is not better but marginally worse with some new features like 4K 120 etc. but sometimes the subtle differences and even how people handle these things are not well understood. For example, you should not get these artifacts because normal circumstances don’t completely obscure light, but setting it on a table top with a camera bump can result in minimal light entry as the phone can rock ever so slightly and even in the dark room, it might pick up a little bit of light that contributes to artifacts that can be seen (which should not happen) but if compressing the phone gently into the leg of a pant or a vinyl or leather wrappedbook binder or cover or into a darkly colored pillow to absolutely guarantee there is literally no light entry I get a different outcome. I don’t take a picture like that normally but I got a jet black screen doing it that way and blue artifacts doing it on the table top and a very dark room.
Also, another reason some users may get different experiences as one person may have a case with a thickness that brings the camera bump, even with or flushed to the rest of the case, while another may still leave it pronounced, resulting in a little rock and a little difference in outcome explaining why some people do and don’t get it. It may be a false answer. That’s not well. Understood just by the simple difference between how people Have their phone covered. Again not an explanation for Apple. I always have problems with their phones and software many times significant obvious failures for years they don’t fix because they literally tell me not enough. People report them directly so they’re not gonna spend the time on it even if they understand a problem that they don’t feel like enough users complain about directly to them. I’ve even pointed to these forums and they say that’s fine butif you’re the one calling in and no one else is, that’s not enough sometimes in their own words, of course

Checkered Pattern WE SAW ON S24 Ultra THIS YEAR MORON ❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓
Samsung why are you still keeping quiet about this??? This is pathetic! Thats why you LOOSE customers! We all MUST punish you and never buy Samsung products again! This is how you treat your customers ?!
Recently, reports among Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra users about a significant issue concerning screen quality have been on the rise. This issue, particularly evident when displaying dark colors like dark gray, manifests as a graininess or sandiness, noticeable at both low and high brightness settings. This situation degrades the expected quality of AMOLED screen technology, which is known for its deep black levels and high contrast ratio. Similar problems have not been observed in previous Samsung models such as the S23 Ultra and Galaxy S9 Plus, indicating that the current situation is unusual.
I support this issue with photos collected from different user forums and images taken from my own device. The photos demonstrate the reality and impact of the problem, showing that it is not limited to a specific group of users. The ineffectiveness of recent updates on the Korea to resolve
the issue suggests that it is not a software problem but a hardware-related one.
One of the biggest disappointments is Samsung's lack of any official statement or satisfactory solution to address users' concerns. The suggestion by a moderator on the Samsung Korea Forum to use the device at maximum brightness and in light mode seems like a temporary measure rather than a real solution, raising concerns for users' eye health.
This situation reinforces the view that Samsung needs to be more transparent and effective in recognizing this widespread issue and finding an appropriate solution.
Users deserve to know the cause behind the grainy appearance of the screen, which production batches are affected, and what steps Samsung is taking to resolve this issue.
Additionally, the presence of pixel-like errors that resemble shining dust inside the screen when exposed to direct light while the screen is off further increases concerns about screen quality. This problem has been observed not only in the S24 Ultra but also in other Samsung devices such as the Tab S9 Ultra.
In this context, we expect Samsung to make a clear statement about these issues, conduct the necessary investigations to identify the affected devices and batches, and take concrete steps to maintain customer satisfaction and product quality. As a user community, we are aware that such issues can harm the overall quality of products and brand perception, and we hope that Samsung takes these concerns seriously and provides effective solutions.
Yeah, I honestly believe the grain is present on ALL S24 units unfortunately.
There are A LOT (if not ALL) of units in the S24 line that have a problem of noise that appears on dark screens and low brightness (like when we use the phone in bed before going to sleep).
What happens is that the subpixels of the display have different intensities in low brightness (as you can see in this picture below by Android Central), which causes grain.
      20240218_172245.jpg
This problem is called mura, and all manufacturers know how to get rid of it using a demura process, but apparently Samsung simply skipped this step on the S24 line. You can read more about it in this article by Android Central here.
In this Reddit post, there's a person who returned their phone FIVE times and they all had the exact same problem. Some people don't notice it, but apparently every unit has it.
Also, some people (like me) have terrible diagonal lines on the screen, in addition to the noise, as you can see in this picture below, by a Reddit user:
Mine has grain AND diagonal lines, while my fiancé's has grain. This is unacceptable on a phone that costs $1300, and what's even more unacceptable is how Samsung is (not) handling this.

Nothing to do with the software. Go and take a 30 second dark photo with a subject. Just a regular night photo and see if those lines appear.

I just tested in the bathroom on a flat surface by the sink, had the door closed and light turned off so the room was fully dark, and now I got a better result. All the blue was gone except 4 small dots where one blue dot was in the middle of the screen. But they were very small.

@@ShayneMostyn I have taken night photos of the sky and stars with 30 secs but havent seen it there. What about light pollution does it have to be in a pitch black area or just normal nightphoto with 30 sec ? I will try again tonight in a darker area with a subject and test with 30 secs.

@@ShayneMostyn Should I ask to have it replaced you think if I get these lines with night photo? Not sure if apple is willing to do that, if they dont see it as a known problem it might be hard to get replaced, but of course I can try. Although not looking forward to set up the phone again so I will wait and see how bad it is for me before I do anything further, gonna test outside tonight, so far havent noticed anything bad but then again I didnt look for it. Imagine getting it replaced and then the new phone doing the same, that would be frustrating.

Camera lenses wrapped in towel, face down on table 30s exposure at 1X zoom: pitch black image no blue banding, iPhone 16 Pro (non-max). iOS 18.0.1

Same OS. Similar system of covering lens pushing into a pillow. Only 3.4 second exposure as determined by the phone but black. Laid on counter and what otherwise described as a black room and get blue chroma or pixelization. Because of the camera bump not preventing all light from entering. But with that informationpersonally not sure whether that’s software interpretation of minimal light entry that is a software problem or a censor problem and how it interprets minimal light entry. Thoughts? Because in reality it’s almost probably literally never the case that anyone takes a picture of anything and truly dark black so while we can create a black screen, covering our lenses completely like an old-school camera having a lens cover that’s not the way pictures are taken, so I’m not sure what we’ve achieve here. Absolutely not a criticism justthe reality of taking a picture in low light means just that very low light not jet black open to your thoughts or comments. No criticism.

Did the test and mine shows an absolutely pitch black image, 30sec exposure with both the main and wide angle cameras on a table/black surface.

@@skeimi78 I’ve redone the test many times with different levels of light entering the camera and still can’t see any blue lines/hue. I’ve followed the ‘phone on a table’ test, but later tonight I’ll try some actual night photography.
