Christchurch & The Great Alpine Highway (Arthur's Pass) South Island New Zealand Road Trip Vlog 1/4

- The South Island of New Zealand is an incredibly scenic, stunning and beautiful place. We flew from Auckland to Christchurch, rented a car then did a big loop around the upper half of the South Island. This is the first of four vlogs from our latest NZ road trip.
Our Airbnb was conveniently located just 5 minutes from Christchurch airport. A very clean, compact and cosy studio. Perfect for an overnight stay. Maurice was a warm and welcoming host. We ended up staying at the same accommodation for the final night of our trip too.

We had dinner at New Zealand's only Burmese restaurant Rangoon Ruby. An absolutely delicious 10/10 meal. We loved every single dish we ordered.

The next morning we travelled from Christchurch to Greymouth along the Great Alpine Highway and through Arthur's Pass. The Great Alpine Highway is a stretch of road that connects Christchurch to the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
Along the way we stopped at the following places:
1. Castle Hill (Tip: when using Google Maps, enter "Kura Tawhiti Access Track" to get you to the carpark and start of the walking track)
2. Arthur's Pass Scenic Lookout
3. Devils Punchbowl Waterfall
4. Otira Viaduct Lookout (where we saw tons of kea right at the end of the video)

My favorite moment in any of your vids…when Peter or Yen says “We’re going to get us some food”….and you guys did not disappoint!!! Was extra excited about this meal because I met a person from Myanmar about a week ago and we talked a lot about Burmese food… I got super curious and did a lot of research so this vid was a treat!!! Great find Peter!! Only one in NZ!! Definitely a huge “massive one of 👌” 😋😋😋 Looked amazing!! Glad you guys got some beautiful weather. Snow capped mountains and clear blue skies looked absolutely amazing. Was well worth waiting an extra week! Thanks guys!!!!! 🏔 (by the way, love som tam/papaya salad… I eat it almost daily😋😋😋)
Will definitely need to head over to Myanmar 🇲🇲 one day to eat all the food and see all the temples. Might be a few years now though 😥 but yes Rangoon ruby was just amazing still think about the restaurant from time to time. We're gonna go back sometime hahaha.

I don't think I've ever seen Castle Hill that quiet! Given I have only gone twice since moving to Canterbury, but still...it was booming with people. My kids and I love climbing all over the rocks. So much fun. And a great picnic spot on a sunny summer day.
It's been great traveling around New Zealand over the last year because places that would normally be super crowded have been very quiet. We were fortunate to have castle hill mostly to ourselves 😊✌

Mate I'll tell you.. I was actually cold in Christchurch. Then at the devils punch bowl where it was also freezing we walked past this southern man in shorts and a tee shirt. I was like what the heck mate it's 0 degrees here what are you 😂😂😂

Yeah I used to be like that, out in the cold in a t-shirt and shorts until I lived in the Middle East and it reset my internal body thermostat and I can't handle the cold at all 🥶.

That's us after spending some time in south east Asia and coming back... one of my good friends lived in Africa for ages came back and now can't leave his room cause it's too cold for him (even in Auckland) 😂 glad you enjoyed it 👍

Aaaaaah yep that exact spot was where we had our first Kea encounter of South Island. Gorgeous but naughty, it stated ripping off our rubber window seals and tried to do the same with the antenna lol Then one hitched a ride on top of someone's camper and didn't get off until all the over the other side of that bridge.
Cant wait to see the other parts to this, lets me relive my road trip of NZ
😁 I always say to yen seeing the Kea is my favorite part of the whole trip. They are the most magnificent birds 🐦 having interactions like that with wild animals is really special the one under the car kept removing rubber seals and dropping them on the ground 😂

Thanks for another awesome ep. I have been to Castle Hill back in 2017. We arrived the next day after landed in Christchurch. You guys make me miss NZ so much. I love autumn and winter, no wind. Spring and summer are too windy for me.

You'll love it down there Barry! So much great stuff to see we had some really great food all trip. We enjoyed this trip so much we bought some tickets back down for round two hahaha.
It feels so nice being able to travel, even if it's regionally. As hot as it is here right now, we're not jealous of the chilly weather. Very nice accommodation. We heard about the earthquake, so sad. And yeah, I don't think we've had Burmese food. Pickled tea leaves sounds very interesting. Yes to curry chicken any time!

Hi Peter and Yen! :D it was so funny to see how much you liked the frost and ice around the devil's punchbowl waterfall! I grew up in Belgium where we'll have some snow and freezing days quite often, but I've yet to see both ice and snow, even frost, after moving to Osaka so I totally get your fascination with it haha! The Burmese food looked superb too!

You were really lucky to miss the rain that was forecast too, Christchurch looked more like Venice after it 😟
😁 was an awesome start to the trip, unfortunately we did get a lot of that rain too but it only comes in the video's a few weeks later. Ashburton especially really got hit hard we had a friend that was stranded in Christchurch and couldn't get home cause the only bridge to Ashburton was covered in flood water 😯

They managed to get home in the end 👍 luckily the bad weather passes by pretty quickly in NZ
Arthur's pass is my favorite pass of all in south island, never gets tired to look around, sadly never get a chance to drop by, only in Castle Hill we get a chance

The papaya salad 🥗 isn't as spicy as the Thai one it tastes quite different. It's got a lovely balance and creaminess to it. Looking forward to the day we come back to eat this place again hahaha. How is everything going in Ashburton? Hope you're staying warm 😁

We were super lucky with the west coast, it's definitely one of the more temperamental areas of New Zealand 😅 hope it stopped long enough for you to catch some sights
@@PeterandYen i had planned to do the helicopter ride up to Franz Josef, anyway it was called off due to weather. So instead we went quad biking in the pouring rain, in water half a metre deep and had the best time.

Those Castle Point boulders look great for climbers!
Arthur's Pass is so gorgeous. When we visited NZ, we drove there from Blenheim I think and stayed for two nights in the middle is the national park. It was the middle of the summer, but even then it snowed in the higher mountain peaks one night. Wonderful memories!
Hahaha yes 💯 this is your perfect weather Bert. The castle hill did have some iron pegs so I'm guessing climbers do that in less slippery weather.
Wow the snow falling in the mountain in summer sounds like an awesome stand out memory. Love moments like that, those are the treasures in life. Read the alchemist recently not sure if you've read it but they talk about personal legends and that memory feels like it would be part of one 😂 random thing to bring up, hoping you've read the book too or you'll have no idea what I'm on 😂

Hello I think the main popular stop that we missed was the cave stream scenic reserve which looks really cool just do a bit of research before hand for it as you will need to wade through water to make the most of it.

Yep! Far more humid in the north
On a sunny day in Auckland it went to 18 degrees last couple of days.
On the sunny day that we shot this in Arthur's pass it was 4 degrees for comparison 😅 though it felt like 0 degrees when you're in the shade 🥶

NZ has actually got some amazing EV infrastructure - although the South Island West Coast is a bit of a blind spot, unfortunately.
