Hey Chris, I get the same result with a sacrificial led though many experts do not recommend it. Why is using a shifter better? Safer, more stable or just more elegant? Please elaborate, I don't wanna burn my house down. Thanks
Awesome like a Possum!! I bought a crap ton of those Logic Level Shifters over a year ago and never understood what they do or how to wire them. Now I do! Thank you Jesus Man!!! ⛪
I really recommend you choose a different wire that is UL listed. Long LED strips can draw a lot of current and are at risk for fire if not using quality conductors. Especially if you are planning to hide these wires behind walls.
Hello Chris, Thank you for the great video. I've got a question, do you think I can control a simple led bulb with the domestic automation board? When I say control I mean just turn on/off and dimmer. Thank you for the support!
Had the same issue last night on my SK6812 strip and after putting a 270 ohm resistor, the flickering was gone. Didn't need a resistor on my WS2813 strip tho.
The other thing I bought some of the tape lights you recommended to use with the W led app box and none of it had any glue on the back . Who does that? I ordered 3 different sets and none of them had anything on the back. Id that like a special option i forgot to check on the order
very frustrated with my wled esp32 wroom project, after watching your video i desoldered the i2c mic and have the same level shifter in it's place. the project uses thirty hexagons (i.e., hexaleaf on Thingiverse) with 36 ws2815 leds, and it works perfect for a minute before random hexagons malfunction. Tried using the SP901e but my mulitmeter readings say 1.5 v goes in this line splitter / amp ... and i have three outputs from it, reading 1.5v each. i thought the esp32 was supposed to output 3.3v and the line level shifter, bucks up to 5v data signal ? i also have the second blue data line of all 3 strings, soldered to ground, since these are ws2815. there are 1,080 leds connected to the SP901e, 360 per output. Ordered a QuinLED Dig-Quad and pray that when i wire it up, this honeycomb tree light will not flicker wrong colors ever again. Should i return this SP901e to Amazon? it costs as much as a string of leds, but doesn't seem to work.
Indeed. I have tried the bidirectional logic level converters and these give may too much noise or can't handle the data speeds. Once I switched it for any TTL chip it was gone but I still needed to add a filter capacitor to the TTL to make the signal stable.
can you explain to somebody who has zero clues about this kind of stuff? i am trying to figure out what i need. right now i am searching for a level shifter where i don't need to solder...
Hey, Chris Got a request Would you mind making a video about the govee app. I've got a sports bar I installed 20 plus light strips on two music boxes and none at govee can help. They are brain dead at customer support the app is very confusing and I like to put it on a timer Plz Help!?@!
are the level shifters needed when controlling a 5v relay module? I see some video tutorials that don't use the level shifters. can you provide your insight on that topic? Appreciate the feedback 🙏🏻
I've had success controlling optomechanical relays without level shifting. But they are noisy. With most modules coming from China, you have to always scan the reviews to see if buyers complained about specs being wrong.
So I have a microphone that currently uses the 3.3v on my ESP32. Can I power the microphone off the 3.3v side of the level shifter? Anyone advise on this please?Newbie 😊
I used the sacrificial pixel last year for a Burning Man project. I had the data line split 4 times and the run on each LED line was 35'+ and it worked perfectly. My online research returned you could run 100' without issue but I did not test that so can not verify. But like I said it worked splitting the data line 4 times to runs over 35 feet. Plus WLED has in the settings, a box to click, to turn off First Pixel for this reason. Hope this helps!
I also use wagos like they came in a big box. Which they did. They look so sad just lying in there. They seem to be much happier when connected! 😊 Joking aside, I frequently rebuild my lighting stuff. Wagos make it easier.

This.. this is exactly what I was looking to solve. You are the LED king of youtube sir. thank you so much!
Have yourself a great weekend Chris.
@chrismaherdiy please make a video on how to connect this mic with logical shifter on esp32
Make a video on WS2811 led strip control with ESP32.
I really recommend you choose a different wire that is UL listed. Long LED strips can draw a lot of current and are at risk for fire if not using quality conductors. Especially if you are planning to hide these wires behind walls.
cool video - what the max length and size of wire to run from logic shifter to WS's led strip?
Hello Chris, Thank you for the great video. I've got a question, do you think I can control a simple led bulb with the domestic automation board? When I say control I mean just turn on/off and dimmer. Thank you for the support!
What extra distance do you think this will extend the data?
Had the same issue last night on my SK6812 strip and after putting a 270 ohm resistor, the flickering was gone. Didn't need a resistor on my WS2813 strip tho.
Did you just put it on the data line after the wled? Perhaps a picture? I cannot use a levelshifter on my setup and another solution.
@@surfdk Yes, just put a resistor on the data line between the controller and the led strip.

I can smell the comments saying that this is not the correct level shifter
I2C vs TTL. It’s a raging debate!
Indeed. I have tried the bidirectional logic level converters and these give may too much noise or can't handle the data speeds.
Once I switched it for any TTL chip it was gone but I still needed to add a filter capacitor to the TTL to make the signal stable.
Because it is ;) A simple TTL buffer/and/or gate (maybe with hysteresis) would do way better and easier as no 3V3 needs to be connected

What if you were using a 12V or 24V power supply?
I am having many problems powering the esp32 with a regulator from the 24v psu. Lots of flickering with a 3 cm data wire
You might need a buck converter then. Or a separate 5V power supply.
I think you should warn that you recommend solder that contains lead.
How can I get ws2812b led strip in India at best price
So I have a microphone that currently uses the 3.3v on my ESP32. Can I power the microphone off the 3.3v side of the level shifter? Anyone advise on this please?Newbie 😊
Anyone?
love your tutorials, what do you think about the LLS method vs sacrificial 1st LED?
I used the sacrificial pixel last year for a Burning Man project. I had the data line split 4 times and the run on each LED line was 35'+ and it worked perfectly. Finally “White is “Negative”😅😂😅
what a waste of wagos,, that first inline wago killed me
I also use wagos like they came in a big box. Which they did. They look so sad just lying in there. They seem to be much happier when connected! 😊
Joking aside, I frequently rebuild my lighting stuff. Wagos make it easier.
I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt since this is for demonstration purposes and not a final installation.
